  • My question is how easy is it to change from sport to knowledge each month.

  • +5

this seems quite expensive, is this really a bargain?

    • +5

+1, and going by Foxtel's history of dodgy promos and misleading advertisements I can't imagine it isn't without additional catches.

Just seems like advertising to me.

      • The normal price is actually $60 ($44 for get started + $16 for sports, + 100 standard metro install fee) a month so this is a saving.

    • +1

yes. it is. basic package + sports!

  • +3

For what you get this isn't even close to a bargain, we really need to go back to the days where 20 or 30 dollars got you a good package and sport. Watching games in SD is great…. Hell even decent streams are 720p.

    • +3

Agreed. I've lost total interest in the AFL since the games have gradually shifted to Foxtel. Besides, I don't want to support Murdoch after some of the things NOTW have been caught doing.

    • +3

Paying $50/month to watch ads is never a good deal :S It's like a stupid tax, but whatever right. It's a free world.

As far as the 'deal' goes. I'm sure there's a catch. If the deal is anything like their data harvesting iPhone 'app', there will be a catch.

      • Price wise, this appears OK, but I'm wary of anything that has that many asterisks - not being a previous customer, I will have to check out what 'standard' install includes (or more importantly, excludes).

  • +1

    i'm paying $43 for standard + sport

  • +5

i threaten to cancel my subscription every 12months

  • can you change it to knowledge then back to sports every month?

  • Guys, it's op's first post.

I barely sense any bargain here, but guess we should be kind to him.

    • +6

Why? The OP didn't say "First post, be kind" LOL

      • +2

Yeah I wanna see the "be gentle" request or I go hammer and tongs at them! :P

        • I thought it was the other way around, ask the 'oldies' to be gentle … then get pulverised :)

  • +1

Footy season's almost over, who wants the sports package over summer, all the good stuff is on freetv?

    • A bit of a bummer about no AFL, but having EPL would make it worth it.

  • You can get foxtel + any channel package (including knowledge and adventure) for $50 a month now. FYI.

  • Is this not cheaper than usual? If so, then surely it's a bargain.
I am actually tempted to sign up, but I want HD. I always wanted just sports, but they always made you pay for all this other crap too so I never signed up. I wonder if they will do this deal + HD for $60/month.

  • +1

People out of contract can get much better than this.
I asked to be disconnected and I'm now currently on the following for $44 a month:

    Standard Pack
    Movies
    HD
    IQ2 with record

Just be tough, the retention center wants to keep you.

    • +1

Yes, but for those of us who don't currently have it this seems like a good deal. Then after 12 months I can threaten to cancel for a better deal.

      • exactly right mate. just offering some insight to those who may want to get a better deal later on.

    • Is there anything that u requested for the cancellation? Wasnt worth the $44 or that telstra offered better plan or that a mate u know of is paying $44 on this such and such plan?

      • +2

a great arguement to use is that free to air digital tv now has more channels, movies and sport… and its all in HD…. FREE! even old shows like bewitched and hogans heroes are showing now. I had the old silver box standard def and told them that I didnt think it was even worth the basic rate of $44 even with movies or sport, and I wish to cancel. They accepted cancellation but 2 days later they called me offering the above pack.

i ummed and arred and then they chucked in IQ2 with recording functions (and free upgrade installation), and i couldnt say no.

and they are even happy to change over the packs when I want…. for instance when NBA is on I drop movies and pick up sports, or on occasion i'll change movie pack from showtime to movie1… no dramas, $44.

be polite, but direct. free to air tv has improved BIG TIME over the last few years….. we know it, they know it.

and also- for those not with foxtel yet, dont sign up to long contracts.
        6 months tops.
when you call, let them go through the whole sales speil… show your interest, but as soon as they say "12 month contract" go cold turkey completely, even if it means hanging up and calling another time. they can DEFINITELY offer shorter terms, but it really depends on whether you are dealing with someone on the other end that really wants your business, or really couldnt be stuffed.

polite but firm and you'll be fine.

        • Thats the argument I will be using as well, thx for that.
That and the fact I've got an updated TV and not using HD on it with Foxtel is a waste of time.
          I'm aiming for the platinum @ $75p/m

  • We're currently on a free 6 month connection to Austar (with movies and HD) which came as a bonus with a computer purchase a few months ago. There's no way in a fit we'd pay anywhere near $40 or $50 a month to watch so many ads.

  • I have been with foxtel for more than 3 years, so im no longer in any contract, can i get this one, or do I need to cancel and sign up again?

    • Do what UFO did and threaten to cancel. If you have been with them for more than 3 years, I think they will give you a better offer to make you stay on.

  • footy is over in 4 weeks anyway… no point in having the sports channel after that…

  • +1

Glad you guys have said this about threatening to cancel, my mum's with Foxtel for 10+ years getting screwed like most of their customers. With this advice I'll sort them out for her.

Foxtel need to smarten up and offer a wider variety of packages, including different base packages, or charge per channel rather than bundling up good channels with crap ones so that they can sell the crap ones.
"Only $16 more for 8 extra channels" but I only want one of those channels.

    • just use Free-to-Air then if you can't justify $16 for the extra channel…

Foxtel are a private company offering a service… if you don't like the offering, don't buy it…

      • Foxtel is a pay-TV monopoly, 50% owned by Telstra in a jv (no pun intended) with News Corporation and Consolidated Media Holdings - who have been 3 of the biggest corporate bullies in Australia - what a pedigree!

… and if you disagree I would be happy to list the evidence.

    • you need to remind them that the 'extra channels' they are offering for a price are pretty much available on free to air anyway.

for instance, One Sports has pretty good HD sports coverage (so why pay for standard def sports?), and there are plenty of good doco's you just love to watch on ABC and Channel 7 (so why pay for Doco pack?). you just need to think about your point of arguement before speaking to them. if they can tell you are trying to bluff you wont get anything, but if they suspect that you are seriously looking to leave… well…. then congrats to you, high stakes poker player :).

This deal has been around for a while. Also for people looking for bargaining with foxtel and getting good deals, there is a massive massive thread in whirlpool forums with all the tips included. These tips will come in handy mainly for existing customers threatening to cancel.

I disconnected foxtel a year ago because of the signal problems in my building. It was my building's problem that the cabling works were not done properly. All the work is now finished. So i called foxtel to re sign this month and explained the problems i had last time. Managed to get a new connection with IDHD box for $100.00 + first month platinum package free + 2nd month onwards sports HD package for $60.00 (all i want is sports). I couldnt be happier with the HD channels. I love sports and thats why it makes it worthy for me. There is US open, cricket, EPL, AFL (which is finishing soon) but If I am not wrong, from next year, every single game of footy is live on foxtel.
