From the website:

The Outer Worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.

Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

Key Features

The player-driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.

You can be flawed, in a good way: New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.

Lead your companions: During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.

Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything… except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan.

Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

Enjoy!

Sorry but this is a sucker price. You're much better served signing up to Game Pass for 3 months for $1.
    https://www.xbox.com/en-AU/xbox-game-pass/pc-games

You'll easily finish the game in that time and trust me when I say you won't feel like a second playthrough.

One is for rent, the other to "own" - of course those prices differ.
Some people like to own games though so for them this is the lowest price so far.

      • -2

Technically, you own the license for the game, not the actual game.

        https://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/02/do-we-own-our-steam-games/

Owning something assumes you can do what you like with it, alter it, resell it, make a copy of it. The line between renting and owning digital products is blurry already, might as well save some money.

        • +1

That is why I put this in ".

I work in IP and even your definition of ownership is not correct legally at all. Altering and making copies is NOT part of ownership depending on the item in question. Copying certainly never is with one exception only.

However, please do note that in some countries software is considered as a product and hence can be owned. My master thesis mentor's Professorial thesis deals with this issue in Europe and especially in Germany.

          • @Lysander: Probably should have included "or" rather than ",", poorly worded on my part.

My point is we don't really own games we buy, we effectively are paying for a license, or the right to use the product and that's about it.

My understanding of the European case study (just guessing it might be something like that 2019 relating to Steam ownership?) I think you're referring to is that they were more theoretical findings and haven't really had any practical implementation yet. You're still purchasing a license as I understand it.

@Oxenfree123: No, not just theory. Court cases and findings and not even that recent. German decisions.

      • I completely agree with what you're saying but with a price discrepancy this huge it's a very tough argument to make.

I fully expect the price on Outer Worlds to crash. If you really wanted to you could pay the sub now, play the game, and then buy it in 3 months and I $100% guarantee you will end up better off at the end.

        • +1

That's what I would do but I would also do this with phones etc.
I can wait but there are many, many, many other people who cannot wait and that is fine as everyone is different.
I am just providing an option for those people.

Was about to make this obligatory comment for this game.

      • Oxenfree? That name sounds familiar alright. By the gods, hope you own the rights to use it. ;)

        • I'm paying a monthly license.

Worth checking on the Epic Game Store.
Somehow when I added this to my cart (it's currently 50% off) it also applied the $10 discount from the start of the year.
    Ended up costing USD$19.99 (AUD$31.17).
I havent purchased anything other than BL3 when it came out, so perhaps others might also have this discount if they claimed it back in late Dec / early Jan (around the same time as the Steam Sale).

    • Yeah I bought Control and Hades and Jedi for under $10 on Epic store during the new year sale. Great value

    • Thanks for the tip! Worked out less than $30 paying with no FX fee card.

This game is over hype, I don't even bother to finish it, luck I get it for free when buying ryzen 3900x. Better get fallout 4 and mod the heck out of it.

    • I think this game is more "fallout" than fallout 4

      • +1

Thats why they said modded fallout 4, not vanilla fallout 4…
