Looking for Recommendation to Keep 3rd Row Seats Cool in Summer

I have 7 seater Ford Territory where 3rd row seat doesn't have any Aircon. All seats get fully utilised due to big family including parents and therefore two kids sit in 3rd row.

Couple of weeks ago, it was over 45 degree in Sydney and my kids were sweating and looked terrible due to no Aircon in 3rd row. I really wanted to get new car but the hands are currently tied due to upcoming committments. Can something be done in 3rd row seat to give them relief?

Plastic ducting taped over the middle vents and funneled to the back seats

12v fan. Plug into ciggie socket and point the fan to the back.

Edit: phone changed ciggie to coffin. :)

You can get handheld battery operated fans that are quite affordable and effective. (You can obviously use these outside of the car too.) They're very popular in Asia.

Tell them to suck it up

When I was a growing up, cars my parents owned didn't have air con. Windows down did the trick

You want me to tell my 2Y and 3Y old kid to shut up because they are complaining about sweating and feeling the heat.

You must be fun at parenting.

I am reporting to the police for child abusing.

    • Third row windows don’t usually wind down.

2y and 3y should still require car seats.. does the 3rd row have anchor points?

        Stick to the original question.

          safety over comfort

      • This! Also, why not put the young kids in the second row and make the adults (who can cope better with the heat) sit in the back?

        • Parents have arthritis and not easy to get in and get out of 3rd row easily. Also lack of room makes it worse

          • @Ash-Say: same… usually I drive.. father in the passenger, kids in seats either side in the second row mum in the middle of the 2 seats and missus in the 3rd row. having said that we aren't giants so short trips up to 30 minutes is ok.. anything longer then it does get uncomfortable

    Pack it with ice

    • actually you can wrap an ice pack in a tea towel and put it on the kid, works well

    • Is that dirty street pie Laurina from Bachelor? - the model in the pic

      • No idea. I’ve never watched it.

Replace your back window with a box air con, run by a generator mounted to your roof.

Wouldn't the air con from the front and middle rows be enough to lower the temp in the third row? If not, maybe crank the air con so it does?

Also, do you have tint on the windows?

I don't have a 7 seater car, but from my experience, keeping the windows closed, turning up the aircon, and pointing the vents towards the roof gets the back of the car nice and cool. If the aircon doesn't get cold enough, might be worth getting it serviced.

Some cheap box don't even have the middle row aircon so the front passenger and driver will be in Antarctica while the middle somewhere in the tropics and the rear kids will be boiling in sauna.

  • Ford's have always had average aircon. I suspect its the same setup for a falcon and therefore undersized for the territory.

I too have a 7 seater Territory. On hot days, i always set the aircon to the coldest setting. Depending on the model, it could be aircon max or 18 degrees if you have climate control. this makes the compressor run continuously which helps keep the whole car cool. Also i use both head and floor vents which helps….

Put your parents in the back row.

  • Ryobi 18v portable fan in between the front seats pushing air up and back should do it. Also get 5% ceramic tint on all windows behind the front 2 seats. Helps a LOT.

    • Yes, put illegal grade tint on, great recommendation 😂

        • Yup exactly, can't exceed 35% VLT

WA now (as of a couple of years ago) allows 20% on rear windows/windscreen (more in keeping with privacy glass darkness)

5% is illegal in every state. Run the risk of the cops giving you a sticker, and/or no insurance payout in an accident

          • @spackbace: You're allowed 25% past the b-pillar now in NSW.

            • @Joney: yep it's 20%, you would be surprised how much radiant heat a good quality film can reduce.

  • Cold water / frozen bottles of water wrapped in tea towels which can be used to wipe their face.

  • Open all the doors for a minute or two while you are getting in.
Start the car, AC on, windows all down before you get in.
Windows down for the first couple of minutes of the drive while AC on.
Then close it up and direct the vents to the roof.

  • Can you get the AC re-gassed. Tinted windows if you don't already have that as it will cut a lot of the head through the glass to start with.

  • Build one of these : https://youtu.be/ezOV85PDZFc

  • Ahhh my santa fe has air conditioning in the 3rd row controlled from the back. But my kids are too small to sit in the 3rd row.. So usually it's the missus that sits back there

  • Handheld USB fans, icepack, ducting, whatever you choose don't ever modify to fit additional aircon that lives off existing compressor. It will die in no time.

You can look for a larger compressor to fit the extra outlets, this obviously need some car aircon experts. Obviously it will suck a bit more fuel but everyone's happy in a cool car.

  • teach them to channel their inner chi to cool themselves off..

  • Instead of keeping AC fan at auto, keep to manual option as full flow, that certainly helps with my car..
