Sunbeam Foodsaver Fresh Food Vacuum System $29 (RRP $129) @ Harvey Norman

840

Saw the Amazon deal for this and wanted to read up about it and found it for the same price at Harvey Norman. Seems like the printer cartridge model. Cheap device but expensive consumables. Would be great if you could use normal ziplock bags…

Just buy the sealer bags and use your vacuum cleaner instead

    • +53

just by zip lock backs and suck the air out with your mouth.

      • Genius, you deserve a Nobel Prize

      • You were always an avant-garde Monsieur JV :P

  • Good price. Honestly a lot of the cheaper bags I'm a bit suss on, I like to sous vide and have been making do with sandwich bags, but apparently th plastic can be hit or miss with the cheapos.
In saying that, what indicates you can't use these with generic bags? The rolls appear to be of the traditional variety

    • The Ziploc brand ones are pretty good. For Sous Vide you can use the water displacement to push the air out before sealing.

    • I would suggest you read up on plastic leaching chemicals into the food with certain products. Common for cheap stuff and when using plastics like sandwich bags that have not been designed to work with heat.

  • Thanks. Missed the Amazon sale so got this c&c

  • Any idea where to get more containers?

    • Also keen to know from Coffee drinkers on which container size is best to store 1kg of coffee beans. Thanks!

      • +1

I thought a coffee container needed a valve so the beans could off gas? I also thought opaque was better. I’m by no means an expert…just wondering if vacuum sealing is really the go for coffee beans?

        • nope, lower pressure , means the beans release more of the volatiles inside them. you big gain is fridge or freezer storage, lower temperatures means less volatiles are released.

          • @garage sale: Many schools of thought - but freezer is a poor choice - unless you vacuum seal and thaw within the vacuum sealed bag - otherwise the beans suck in moisture. No oxygen means slower oxidation and the CO2 that's released after roast surrounds the bean, so the beans don't lose that much flavour if any. That is post roast - not after long shelf storage.

        • The vacuum valve allows air/gas to escape - that's how the suction works. It stops air coming in, not out.
I use a vacuum container right after roasting beans. Slows down oxidation and allows the coffee to develop slowly.

      • A 1kg container?

      • If storing coffee in the fridge or freezer, use glass. Plastic is permeable and it doesn't take long for coffee to start tasting crappy.

        • Plastic is permeable?

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Correct. It's for the same reason that balloons and car tyres deflate over time. The air diffuses through the rubber; people commonly mistake the valve or knot as being responsible for the loss of air. Some plastics are less permeable than others of course, but I know from experience the common zip lock bag is quite permeable to air; actually I think the seal is the weakest point on those ziplock bags. That's why some of the more premium bags have two zip locks.

        • Storing in either fridge or freezer is also a poor option - take it out for use and condensation saturates the bean.

  • Thx bought two, it's cheaper to get two of these rather than getting the extra containers.

Its a bit sneaky with the pictures (on multiple sites that sell this) but its only 1x container and 5x bags per machine.

      • Says 3x containers and 5x bags under specs though? :s

        • +2

Its a 3x Cup container. Im pretty sure its referring to the size.
In the other sales of it have the same wording and the user manual show the different sizes of containers as 3 Cup, 5 Cup and 10 Cup. Not a weight or liquid volume.
Its still a decent deal, especially to get either a spare unit or sell it off and keep the containers.

            @Cinnamon Crunch: You are correct

            As per Amazon listing:

            1 x FoodSaver 3 Cup container, 5 x FoodSaver reusable zipper bags

          • +1

@Cinnamon Crunch: Cheers for clearing that out, was baffled when I picked up my order.

            You're right, very sneaky!

Great thinking! Should’ve got two! :(

Thanks OP bought one, was missing my midnight/too early morning toilet brake shopping, it's been a while

    • +2

A toilet brake? Does it stop you pooping too fast, or does your toilet have wheels?

  • Thanks OP. Ordered 2

  • Must be in Aldi catalog next week

  • And it's gone.

  • Dang, missed it

  • +2

There's still some available through Domayne at the same price if anyone is still looking. Just purchased one.

  • +1

It is not out of stock. For example stock still available in Vic Mornington and Frankston (at least as of posting this comment)

Plus you can get it delivered for extra $7.95 which still makes it a great deal

    • Also stock still available at Bondi Junction NSW (at time of posting).

Wow that's creepy. I just checked and it is true.

      • You probably don’t want to know about facebook “shadow profiles” if you think the hn thing is creepy.

    • It's just a referral link from this site for advertising. Nothing surprising.

  • The RRP is a joke tho.

  • Dammit asked the misses if we should get some but that's a rookie mistake.

    No more stock availabile online

    • First warning mate, next time you may risk getting your OzB license revoked :D

They're clearing these out as the cordless/portable unit is just as good and 1/10 the size…

  • Damn, I cancelled my order from Amazon to get it from Harvey Norman but I was just told they're out of stock.

    • Should have kept Amazon order. It's cheaper after cashback

  • Now we need a good deal on the Foodsaver plastic bags…

  • Maybe check Joyce Mayne if you are near one, none now but there was still two at Joyce Mayne Chancellor Park ($29).
