Question: Can You Claim Workers Compo if You Got Coronavirus from Work?

Had this very odd casual conversation with a workmate last week, we were talking about how many people are getting the virus from everyday things.

USA now has 10000 death due to flu: https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/03/the-flu-has-already-killed-1…

Coronavirus death now has surpassed MERS and SARS which it also doesn't seen anywhere getting under control.

Then the conversation becomes weird, he says if he ever got the coronavirus while he is working he will claim workers compo, as he got it while working.

But hold on a min, doesn't most virus are caught while working as well? Like the common flu.

I honestly don't think he can claim workers compo if the unfortunate does happen, but he is confident he can as he got another job working near/around airports.

What do you guys think? He is nuts or am I in the wrong here?

Depends. Higher chance if your job required you to go to China or specifically involves dealing with recent arrivals from China or sick people. Less chance if you're just a paper pusher in an office cubicle.

  • do you get workers compensation for a regular flu? why would it be any different?

  • Depends on if you have any ongoing complications, say, for example, death.

Do you get worker’s compensation for a cold or regular flu?

Might be a bit difficult proving that the virus originated in the workplace and that the workplace was negligent in having you work, at the moment at least. If there was a proven diagnosed case and they kept you working in the conditions then go for it.

If it happens make sure you let us know the outcome

  • Like any illness or disease picked up from work, it can be claimed. You just need to prove that you got it at work. Which is basically impossible and why you can't claim cold/flu etc.

    • If claiming was possible, benefits are mostly death benefits as recovery would be weeks and sick leave would be sufficient.

  • You could try though I can't see how you would prove that it was caused through work.

  • My thoughts is:

Flu is seasonal, how often do you go to the bank and see a Teller with a red nose? And if she is the one end up serving you and you got the flu the next day, you still can't prove the Teller gave it to you.

I think the same principle applies to Coronavirus hence the debate with my college. 10000 people has died from flu in the USA alone, it cant be that much worse. Its just me though

    • I can't remember the last time I was in a bank.

USA now has 10000 death due to flu: https://www.cnbc.com/

The mainstream media has left you completely misinformed about what is happening in the world.

I mean wake the F up, to quote the article you linked to:

“In the U.S., it’s really a fear based on media and this being something new,”

Why people go on consuming this idiocy is beyond me.

  • There are 300 cases outside of China as of today and only 1 death.
That number changes when you include China.

Main stream media be fear mongering again.

LOL OzB gets stupider every day.

  • if u just get the coronavirus from just being at work. then there would be thousand of people around Australia with it and hundreds dieing every day.
so there might be a delay in your compo..

there was a guy in china who worked a 12 hours shift at a KFC serving food and being on the register. and he was just diagnosed with corona. i wonder if his work mates will file.
