Why do some people think the Consumer Law gives them 2 years warranty?

Especially for Apple products I hear this a lot.

This is a myth.

You have at least three years in my opinion, apple does forecasts assuming a product lifespan of 3 years https://www.apple.com/environment/pdf/products/ipad/iPad_PER…

The Act does not state "two years" anywhere. It says goods must be lasting, that they must last a reasonable time.

Where does this myth come from?

The company I work for does Apple authorised repairs, and even though I'm not a technician I know that from time to time devices are repaired under ACL beyond 24 months. I'm not specifically aware of iPhone or iPad (although I can't exclude them based on my knowledge), but iMac and MacBook Pro screen and logic board problems most certainly are routinely covered for longer than 24 months.

      Mac - 3 Years
All other products - 2 Years

Can be longer if the customer pleads their case but will need further escalation with customer relations.

      • What is this based off?

        • Use: Apple conservatively assumes a three-year
period for power use by first owners.

        https://www.apple.com/environment/pdf/products/iphone/iPhone…

Stickfingers why do you think 2 years and can you find a product that apple says should last 2 years?

        • Worked at Apple. Comments are my own however.

        • Also, I didn’t state the products are expected to last this amount of time.
This is the amount of time we were trained to just accept consumer law claims without escalation.

Again, comments and opinions are my own.

Apple like to drive this period through their AppleCare warranty periods and similar, but you would be pretty unlucky if you couldn't claim a phone which Telcos are selling you on a three-year contract and have them somehow claim that it's only reasonably expected to last two out of those three years you're contracted to pay for it over. The reasonable expection and litmus test for how long a product should last is "how long would you reasonably expect to be buying a new one of these very". For example, no-one is buying a new fridge every 2 years, so LG, you can go stick your "two-year" warranty - nor is anyone buying a new 65" TV every 12 months - looking at you, Samsung and Sony.
