Telstra NBN at home

Hello,

I have signed up for Telstra NBN (24 months) for our home 12 months ago since no one else was providing NBN to us at that time and we had no other option. It was due to house location and area and no other NBN provider was providing NBN to our address.

Anyway, we are currently paying $89 per month for unlimited NBN. I am happy with the service and the speed and there haven't been any issues. All I am thinking now is to move to some other NBN provider and pay less per month.

Telstra says if we EXIT the plan early we have to pay the MODEM FEE for the remaining months. They don't have any other EXIT FEE. They charge $9 per month for modem. We have 12 months remaining so we have to pay $108 (12 months x $9).

Is there a way I can move to other provider and get my MODEM FEE covered somehow by that provider?

Thank you.

  • No a different ISP will not cover your Telstra modem fee. You can pay the Telstra modem fee and leave or stay with Telstra for another 12 months.

You have to negotiate these things before you sign up. I got TPG to waive the modem/installation fee with no contract when I signed up. They can call the fee whatever they like, exit fee or modem fee, it's essentially the same thing. They just want to penalise you for breaking the contract.

    • $216 is not an unreasonable price to pay for a router with VOIP capability. With most providers have a similar termination fee unless you pay an upfront setup fee.

Unlike most, the Telstra router has the ability to use a 4G SIM for backup. Unlike TPG, they don't lock down the VOIP settings to make it difficult to use with another provider.

      • I'm not here to advocate any ISPs or modems. I'm just saying that when I joined up they wanted me to go on a 24 month contract or pay whatever it was for the installation/modem maybe $150. I negotiated with them to put me on a deal where I didn't have a contract and didn't have to pay for the installation. The modem cost me $1.

      • Telstra actually do lock down VoIP.

  • Telstra in my view has always try to rip you off at every opportunity they get. That's why I gave them the boot.

If you decide to move to another ISP, you can reuse the Telstra modem on the new ISP however VOIP may be locked.
Basically if you get phone as well in the new ISP, you may not use the Telstra modem however if you get naked NBN (that is only internet and no phone); many use this as now as majority of mobile plans are unlimited so no phone is needed. Therefore even if you pay them the difference, it's not for nothing.

Check with Telstra if the modem phone VIOP is locked. If not, then give them the boot and never look back at their exorbitant charges considering that they also use call centers overseas like the rest of them (unless you decide to disconnect)

    Good luck.

    Cheers

    • The Telstra router is not VOIP locked. However from what I can tell, it does not support VLAN tagging. Some providers reqire a VLAN tag to be set including TPG/iiNet/Internode when using HFC/FTTC. Aussie Broadband does not require a VLAN tag setting.

The TPG provided router is VOIP locked which makes them worse than Telstra in this regard. However, there is a superuser password on the net which you can use to modify VOIP settings. TPG will not provide this password.

      • Telstra modem VoIP is locked by default.

  • I think you got a pretty reasonable deal although you don't mention what speed. I pay 89 for unlimited through superloop @ 100/40 and provided my own router no contract. Peak hour speed is always good and I imagine Telstra are the same.

I can guarantee that it won't be 100MBps as it's telstra. Possibly half of that. Why move? Cheers
