New car or second hand.

Hi all, in the market for a new car. I'm not sure if I want to go new or second hand but must have 4 seats and be high. (Driveway scrapes comodores)

Currently have a Tucson city.

I was told to look into naval h2 by my dad but know on has good wisdom so give me advice.

Second hand Hummer H1 should be fine

  • Since you didn't suggest a budget, second hand Toyota RAV4 is a sensible option. FJ Cruiser if you want a fun offroader.

    • Lol 30k max.

Ok so for $30k, I'd agree buy used ($30k doesn't buy you a whole lot brand new anyway)

No, don't go Haval, stay as far away as you possibly can!

Look to the Japanese - Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Subaru, and pick what you like.

RAV4, Forester, CX5, CRV, maybe X-Trail to a lesser extent (some people really dislike their CVTs)

Don't go diesel if you're only doing short trips (DPFs don't like them).

Check how much warranty and capped price servicing is left.

        As always, do a PPSR.

Since there's no budget, Lamborghini Urus

OshKosh HEMTT. Better approach and departure angles

      • Paramount Marauder is far more practical although could just get a Unimog.

        • Buy Australian and save on import costs - get a Bushmaster

New Landrover Rangerover if you're worried about clearance. That should be more than sufficient being one of the highest ground clearance on the market for a SUV.

    • Nah, it’ll probably spend more time at the dealer than it does at home, so you’ll never have to worry about getting it up the driveway…

      • lol OP didn't give us too much to work with other than high ground clearance with 4 seats originally.

  • What is your budget? Is anything wrong with the Tucson?

    • Is anything wrong with the Tucson?

      Yes, it is in Arizona.

    • Has transmission issues, c.v. boot, breaks make a huge grinding noise when in reverse and pads are squeezing, a.c. needs regas, motor burns close to 4ltr oil between change.

Was fairly strait on the outside until one of the children at work smashed rocks into it and scratched with wire, now it's fairly beat up (and I've been told I have to claim that on my insurance…)

      • Fair enough. Often people want to change because the car is ‘too old’ But nothing wrong with it. Sounds like yours need replacing.

I tend to replace vehicles when our needs change, rather than just because I want to, although the last car was due for a clutch so I brought forward the ‘needs’ and got a bigger back seat for the kids at the same time. If I hadn’t wanted the extra back seat space I would have replaced the clutch.

get something used to skip the biggest depreciation hit. Set your budget, then look for a compact SUV in your price range and ask about a specific model for a better response here.

If you buy a Haval (not recommended) get a new one because you’ll probably need warranty for as long as possible.

while buying a new car is great, and its a nice feeling, (done it once), but, financially, let some one else take the initial depreciation hit…
Maybe a 1 to 2 year old vehicle, perhaps that also lets you get into a higher spec model.
low klms, still under warranty, still have tread left on the tyres, in NSW you don't have to have it rego inspected for the 1st 5 years..

We bought a 12 month old Subaru Outback 2.5 Premium and its been great, would have loved the 6cyl over the 4, but went economy rather than power.
They go well enough, great features, constant AWD, great leg room, stacks of space in the cargo area unlike a lot of others.
The 'eye sight' is fantastic with safety breaking, cruise control that auto adjusts to the vehicle in front etc, same as a lot of other vehicles now.

Don't go any Diesel that has a DPF filter (diesel particulate filter)they can block up and are expensive to replace.
Only go that route if you do a lot of longer higher speed driving (say 80k's plus), stop/starts and the shorter city commutes are not good for them.

    naval h2

Avoid. Chinese cars, unproven so far and low build quality. Also dont retain their value

  • Used - lets someone else find all the bugs with a new car. People seem to think new cars are perfect but thats FAR from the truth.

  • Pick up something 18 months old. Let someone else take the immediate depreciation and work it in for you. You'll probably get something with little more than 25k on the clock and at a 20% discount to new.

  • Why not a new Tuscon? The hubby was mentioning this the other day apparently there might be a closer equivalent for the City being I think a Venue? which he thought was competitively priced and new to the market.

  • Mitsubishi Delica

    and used, always used
