FujiFilm W3 3D Camera $96 @ Harvey Norman Balgowlah, NSW until 28 Aug 2011

440

Went to Harvey Norman in Balgowlah and saw this at $96.

They are having a Garage Sale until 28 Aug 2011 so I dont think the price on their website will change.

I took a photo of the sale price here - http://upload.ozbargain.com/2011/08/27/6599_img_2804.jpg (sorry pic's in 3D = blurry :p)

They have about 5 in the bargain bin with marked down prices and about 10 in a cage with unchanged prices.

Not sure why the website says it's around $200+ when the sticker on those cameras show $599.

You could upload pic from your iphone. Anyway, good find.

    • -1

Sorry I did click the mediafire link from the iPhone but it wont let me choose a pic.
But if you could show me how, i would appreciate it. :)

  • I asked one of the HN staff how good the 3D is, and they said "not very". (Their display was turned off so I couldn't try it out). Anyone else had a go?

    • poor reviews around the world for this camera but hey! for $96 you can't be wrong.the only hesitation?i do not want to deal with untrained salespersons from HN.

it just a gimmick product, just like 3d tv

      • +1

I'm sure thats exactly what they said about a plasma/lcd tv about 10years ago.
I'm also sure thats another thing they said when they invented CRT tvs saying that it will never be in everybody's room and people will not sit in front of a tv.

Quite a lot of things you use in your house started as people saying they are gimmicks, but eventually they catch on. Bet you the microwave was once called a gimmick. lol

This is like first generation 3d camera though, prob aint too good.

        • +10

they called betamax, laserdisc, minidisc, HD-DVD, all gimmicks too. Now they're dead.

        • +5

          @voter1

          and WebOS (with watery eyes)

        • +16

I don't recall anyone saying that Plasma/LCD Tv's were gimmicks?

        • +1

Minidiscs were on the market for 19 years. That's a preeetty long run for a "gimmick". There was no viable alternative at the time.

        • +4

Errrr voter1 there is a difference between a gimmick and competing standards whereby one lost. Take for example HD-DVD, it loaded much quicker and imo was a better standard (albeit smaller capacities) but at the end of the day Sony subsidised the Blu ray drives into PS3s and through money at the other studios to come on-board…

        • my point wasnt to take a dump on those standards/competing formats etc.etc. it was just to show that you can call anything new and untried a "gimmick" and there is equal chance that it will either be adopted or thrown away. There is no true test to see if a format will survive or not.

I owned every single one of those formats btw.

It looks just like the Nintendo 3DS, or those old holographic 3D cards you used to play with when you were little.

  • +3

It's still $298 on the website

  • +1

meh its a gimick but its probably good to just use as normal digicam.

i dont have 3d tv anyway so couldnt see the effect..

Got one for the kids thanks

which stores is this available at?

  • +1

    Screw 3D record…what's it like with 2D?

  • going by the number of times this camera has been listed on ebay as secondhand i think it's safe to say, yes, it's a gimmick, you can buy a better non 3D camera for the money, to get decent 3D you need to spend a whole lot more than $298 and Fuji know the average person baulks at such high prices

  • I got this camera and its good in 3D and 2D

  • any special in WA harvey norman?

  • +2

Is it the same price in VIC?

    • +2

I doubt any store in Victoria would be doing a deal this good. In my experience, the more remote the HN store, the better the clearance sales.
Nevertheless, I will be checking my local tomorrow.

    • +2

nope, 196 at Chadstone, but they had at least a bucket full (10), so who knows, they might drop their price

  • +1

how does the 3d work? How do you view it? :)

    • I think you need 3d monitor or 3d tv to view it

    • +3

The photos are viewable in 3D on the camera's display without special glasses. It uses a parallax barrier like the Nintendo 3DS. Only one person can see the 3D effect at a time while viewing, because of the narrow optimal viewing angle.

  • I remember back to last boxing day. Some guy was rigorously trying to buy one of these for 300. They are quite sizable to the normal cameras.

  • +6

I bought it at Harvey Norman a few weeks ago for $178. The quality is pretty good in daylight, but quite grainy in low level light. The 3D effect is quite strong and it's possible to tweak photos after taking them, changing the focus of depth.

Some people have unrealistic expectations of "3D". They literally expect things to look like they're popping out of the camera, where the effect is more like adding depth. I've had friends comment they can't see the 3D effect on my camera at all, where I think it's quite strong depending on photo composition. Most of us have one eye with dominant vision. People with a strong dominant eye are less likely to see the 3D effect.

For $96 the Fuji W3 is an absolute bargain.

    • Do you find the 3D effect is more or less pronounced depending on depth of field?

      • I haven't played with aperture settings and just left the camera in auto mode for now.

One thing that may be useful for many is that you can take panorama shots using both lenses. A guy bought one for that sole purpose (back when it was ~$599). He used to tape two cameras together to try to get the best possible panorama photo

    • +1

Please explain how that is possible…

    • Makes no sense, mate. The two lenses point to the same direction. You can, however, take a photo with one lens zoomed fully wide and the other one fully in. And the widest focal length is not very wide, by the way. Any good camera with a wider lens would make a better panorama by just cropping the top and the bottom off.

  • Great find and thanks for posting! Unsure of performance but will be a great backup camera regardless..

  • just want to know if any HN store can refuse to do the price match?

    • +1

yes they can.Because it is not a advertised price

      • +1

Is it possible for you to upload the receipt..thanks..

  • Played it for a while.

very nice and solid product.Amazing 3D effect.Sad to see so good a thing get given up…

  • ok..thnks..

As a digital camera, it's not very good. Slow to start, big and heavy, poor battery life, slow to focus, quite a lot noise in images etc. So, for a generic digital camera, don't buy this. But for 3D effect, it's actually pretty nice. I have a 50" Panasonic 3D plasma, and the photos and movies look pretty good and convincing on it. Some better than others, but generally quite nice. A pain to use, as I haven't found another device that would play the movies back, so will have to use the camera itself with a separately purchased mini-HDMI-HDMI cable.

  • got one today at broadway. they price matched it for me.

charged it; played with it a little shooting things around the house and its pretty great. Lovely camera. I don't know what the guy is saying - the one above me- load times to bootup ain't bad.

$96? Even better for what used to sell for $600. Thanks for the headsup!

    • They price matched it? I can't get anywhere to price match it. "It's a franchise sale to clear out the stock" They want to charge me $149. T_T

      • which store?

        • I'm fairly sure that was Logan Hyperdome QLD, I just went to Everton Park QLD who told me they would price match from the picture in the post. I got there and they said they wouldn't. >_>

can someone please upload a receipt PLEASEEEEE :)

  • Speak to Ahmad Hakim at HN Martin Place, he's got one left and he knows about the $96 price and is willing to sell for that price today.

    • I think i got the last one around 4pm at HN Martine place when I show them ur message to HN otherwise they are goin to sell it for $198!!

  • I eventually got one for $149 from Harvey Norman in Aspley, price matching to Harvey Norman in Browns Plains. Every store I rung told me that $96 was below price, hence why they wouldn't match it.

  • Please upload a receipt PLEASEEEEE :) try matching with OW. Thanks.

  • Just a heads up, Fujifilm has informed me that you can get 3D photos printed here - http://harveynorman.print3d.com.au/ Not exactly a bargain, but they have a monopoly on it I guess.
