And why should it be free? Counter-strike has no ingame shop unlike TF2. Oh yes, Valve should host servers and lose money just so some cheapskates can play a game. Just because TF2 and DOTA2 (rumoured) are free doesn't mean every game they make should be free.

      • +13

Who would want it to be free.

I don't want to play de_dust and see a bunch of hats everywhere…..

      • +1

wikipedia (yes i know its a wiki) says that DOTA 2 will have a retail version as well as the online download version (steam)… retail likely mean pay, so DOTA 2 is likely to be a paid game.

      • How many servers does valve actually have? Most of time I play, its usually on australian ISP hosted servers, or private ones.
But there is no need for free, selling old games like these for 1.25 pretty much inline.

    • I'd rather CS was not polluted by custom weapons that require you to pay real money to get your hands on.

    • +3

So many negs. People seem to forget (or be too young to remember) that it WAS free. For years and years all the major HL based multi-players were free. They were community designed and developed mods.

That's not been the case for 5-6 years I think, but CS, DoD, TF etc. were all free community made mods of HL.

And I've got not problem with it not being free now. But still. Negs for being an old school fan boi… OK, well, that's kind of fair too.

      • yep, i was playing cs back in the day before steam came out! it wasnt even cs 1.6 back then :P
haha i was around 8 years old :)

  • This is a great bargain.

  • Which version is the more popular online? Counter-strike or source?

    • +1

      source.

      • +1

In Australia yes, in the world no.

  • the original is only $2.49…. im there baby. its been years since ive played this. used to burn it out in the internet cafes.

  • Nice deal Feepitee and thanks for posting. I was hoping for a sale on source down to $10 but $5 is even better.

  • so source is an updated version right?

  • Wondering the original CS, CSCZ and DOD still anybody playing online.

    • CS 1.6 is still way more popular than CS:S.

So yes. (Can't say the same about CZ and DOD.)

  • The community for CS is pretty much dead.. There's alot of people playing a PUG comp on irc .. Other than that theres not that many pub servers and comepetitive scene is almost dead too…. Alot more pub players & servers on source but Gameplay for cs > source

That being said.. CS:GO is rumoured to come out next year :)

    • +1

From the Steam stats, there's 40000+ people playing CS on Steam, so it doesn't look dead, over there.

  • Is there any reason to get the Complete pack, even if its just $2.50 more??

  • awesome, been hanging to play CS again, and thankfully CS source is available for mac :D

  • Why are people posting this now? It was available at the same price during the steam summer thingy. But then again, it still deserves a Positive, great price.

  • Finally decided to pick up CS:S, good game to have.

    • Get CS 1.6 as well, it's still more popular.

      • More popular? Than CS:S?

        • +1

Partly true. 1.6 is more popular than CSS globally. But in Australia CSS is more popular than 1.6 (Currently 1,194 CSS vs 155 CS1.6 players)

        • On steam the stats show CS is still a bit more popular than CS:S
But it's something like 47000 players to 42000 players, so hopefully you can find a few people for a game ;)

      • While the hit detection is better, the graphics aged horribly.

        • Get the HD Texture pack, it's still very tolerable.

  • Here are the official stats from Valve if anyone wants to know how many players for CS, CSS and others:
    http://steampowered.com/status/game_stats.html

    • "This page last updated: 1:30pm PST (21:30 GMT), September 18 2006"
if that's true, then it's not much help. kinda lame they aren't up to date stats though…

    • Wow, I wish I realized that CS was more popular beforehand. Oh well.

      • +1

Here you go, the current stats:
        http://store.steampowered.com/stats/
TF2 tops the charts, however, CS and CS:S just lag behind.

      • I sporadically jump on for a CS: Source fix and never struggle to find a ton of well populated Aussie servers with near zero ping. Don't regret your purchase! Source is a great game - I basically haven't player 1.6 since CS: S came out.

    • Bah I should have posted this one:
      http://store.steampowered.com/stats/?snr=1_4_4__10

  • I'm a big fan of CS:S, still a popular game. Join a jailbreak server sometime :)

  • +3

    CS:S + GMod = $6.24 USD
    http://store.steampowered.com/sub/219/

    Usually $25

  • Looks like the original CS is the game to get. =)

  • i cant find any servers on the original cs

  • +4

I'll up the deal, despite it being the main reason I failed out of uni back in the day.

  • Can I play it without internet?

    • +2

Yea u can start a server and add bots in.

    • +1

Source comes built in with bots. CS1.6 does not, though you can download mods that add bots (very fidgety).
I'd recommend Condition Zero over 1.6 if you'll be mostly playing single player.

    • +1

How are you even posting here? :P

  • Although CS1.6 has way more players than CSS worldwide, in Aus 1.6 is pretty much dead, for those curious about the population here.

  • +1

Finally a new code, I kept getting banned on Internode Servers >.<

    • Although it would help to not play music over voice chat and make inappropriate usernames on Internode servers :PP
