Basement Carpark Storage Robbed

Hi.

Last night I had my basement car park garaged robbed by thieves. They broke the lock and went into the shed to steal some items.

Since my car was parked in front of the shed, I managed to get their faces and their acts all caught on camera. I have reported it to the police, and the forensic team came for a fingerprint inspection but no success. I have also informed strata about this.

My question:

Will the police be able to find them so that I can get my equipment back?

How likely is it?

I can also just claim on insurance as I have contents but I don't have evidence on what was in the shed before.

Just wanted your opinions.

Thanks.

Probably unlikely to get caught but we don't usually have crystal balls. Make the insurance claim and see how it goes. Good luck.

This is the best answer you're going to get on this.

  • i'm surprised the police even bothered fingerprinting the scene

    • I'd imagine it's tk build a profile. In the event that they caught the perp, then they can charge them accordingly

  • Sorry to hear, OP. What dashcam did you use that was able to pick up their faces? Forward facing or rear?

Storage cages are sometimes excluded from contents insurance so it's worth checking.

Robbery is stealing coupled with violence.
What you experienced was burglary, theft or break and enter (depending on your jurisdiction).

Doubt you will get your gear back as it has probably already found its way onto Gumtree, etc

Though to add to this its usually worth checking gumtree/facebook marketplace/local pawn shops for your items. You might catch the burglar that way, or at least ruin their day. Not sure but you may even be able to get your items back from the pawn shop if they're stolen goods (hope you got your statement police report thing).

you only need receipts and perhaps signed declaration

but then , as above read your policy whether it excludes storage cages

Post faces on the Sydney subreddit. Someone will recognise them.

You'd probably have more success posting the video online and all over social media. Send it to the dashcam Youtube channels, post it on Reddit etc. If someone makes an ID pass the info on to the police.

I checked with dexter & there's a 56% chance of police finding a perfect match to your thieves

  • Police won't bother. Happened to my brother.
Post video on YouTube and let community help you.

Storage cages are common targets. Best to make yours look like it is full of old towels and newspaper.

Pawn Shop guy here: Chances of getting all your stuff back is unlikely but the chance of getting some items back is quite high if they are easily identifiable as your items by the items being rare/unique or serial coded.

    What you should do next:

    1. File a police report and copy down the case file number. (Sounds like you have done this already)
    2. Compile an email with all the information you can about the items such as photos, serial numbers, things that make the items unique and the case file number from the police then email that information to all the pawn shops in the area.
(Pro tip, To get serial numbers, look for the boxes the items came in and its usually near the barcode or find the store receipt and ring the store you bought it from and they may have a record of the serial number when you purchased the item.)
    3. Keep an eye on gumtree and facebook for your items. Use a big search area (sometimes even search the whole of aus, Things stolen in one state can be sold in other states. (If you find a post that looks like its your item, then forward it to the police with your case file number. Its not wise to try and get the items back yourself and there is a good chance that the person selling it is not the person who stole it.)

Extremely unlikely you will get your stuff back even if the police catches them. Although rare, I have seen some situations where the victim does a bit of digging through classified ads and is able to identify their belongings and get it back (through the police).

Usually thieves like this try to sell off the items asap, so just claim it off of contents insurance. Just tell them what was in there, they will probably ask for the footage of the incident and police report, just give it to the insurance company.

  • For Police to do anything they don't need much; just

    1. Date, time and video of the offence.
    2. Photo, name and address of the offender. Their mobile number would be good too.
    3. Detailed list of what was stolen including serial numbers where applicable.
