Odd it's still full price locally, as it's currently 90% off on the US store which requires a US account.
If you don't have one, sign up to a US account online (via web browser), then make a new console profile on the Switch itself and link the two together. Then, open the eShop with the new US account and purchase from there.
Games purchased from other regions (like the US) will work for all accounts on the console, meaning saves and the whatnot will work fine.
Good deal for a game that's about 200 times that amount for a physical version
Physical versions of indie games like this are usually released as limited runs by speciality company's and are mainly meant for collectors.

Does AU credit cards work directly in the US eshop?
No. What I do is buy gift cards from target.com with PayPal and apply those to a second Nintendo account. Works like a charm. You can still play the games on your main account. The only difference is when you do anything you have to select an account but it's not really a hassle.
With US eshop you can use US Paypal. I use US Paypal with ING debit card, works fine without international transaction fee. Just be sure to change Paypal's foreign exchange rate setting to use your card's rate. Good thing is I can change account region any time I want as there is no balance left in the account. So slightly easier than gift card. But well, if gift card is on sale then maybe go with that option.
US paypal works for US and mexico eshop. Probably Canada as well.
Celeste & Towerfall are both $10 AUD on the US store. Towerfall is an awesome party game, and I'm considering getting Celeste for this price. This is $5 less than their current cheapest AU price ($15). Definitely worth a look at.
