How to Evaluate Removalists Quotes

Hi all,
I have to move in a month contents of a 3br house from Newcastle to Sydney. I tried OneFlare to get quotes but they are all different in terms of:

  • hourly rate or fixed price
  • size of the truck
  • number of guys (2 or 3)
  • other charges like fuel surcharges, etc

Do anyone have any recommendations on how I chose between them? Obviously I want the lowest cost with no surprises at the end (in terms of costs or damaged goods). I’m sure cheapest would be to do the move myself, but I can’t be bothered tbh.

Thanks

Removalists are notoriously the worst of the worst. Unlike other trades (e.g. electrician or plumbing), there are literally no qualifications required for being a removalist apart from having a truck. For some reason, it seems to always attract the worst types of scam artists.

I've never hired a removalist personally, but I've heard plenty of stories from friends and colleagues. Extra hidden charges that are only brought up at the end, broken stuff, sometimes even missing stuff. I'd just say hire a truck and move it yourself. Get some mates over and give them a slab of beer for their help. If you can't be bothered with the move, you'll end up with even more shit to deal with given their antics.

    • Agree, ask around and see if you can a recommendation from someone who know. Also depends how organised you are - will have have everything neatly packed and ready to go for them to move? Or will they have a stuff around moving lots of small things - makes a big difference
The last 2 time I moved I just used a guy who was recommended and just charged by the hour for him and 2 sidekicks. which made things simple, but I was there watching him the whole time and helping a bit as well

    Cheap fast, not good
    Good fast, not cheap
    Good cheap, not fast.

    • Yep, we offer cheap, fast, and good. You can choose two.

  • When I moved Sydney to Melbourne I chose a fixed price quote. I figured it Kane I could pay and not worry whether they were stalling or got lost.
