Oricom Secure740 4.3″ Digital Video Baby Monitor $99.99 @ ALDI Special Buys

170

So this LOOKS to be the Oricom Secure740, which is currently $249 on the Oricom website and over $200 elsewhere.

The ALDI description (and photos) matches the Secure740 product description on the Oricom website. ALDI description:

  • Large 4.3" LCD colour display
  • Motion detection
  • Baby friendly night vision
  • Parent talk back
  • Room temperature display and alert
  • Digital volume control
  • White noise (womb sounds and vacuum cleaner)
  • Soothing lullabies
  • Multi-camera compatible
  • Rechargeable lithium battery included (parent unit)
  • Up to 8 hours battery life (with power save enabled)
  • Transmission distance up to 150 metres outdoors or 50 metres indoors

Like a complete n00b, and in a first-baby-nesting-frenzy, I bought this in the Babysense7 + Secure740 Baby Monitor Value Pack, which is currently on special for $369. facepalm

If you bought this in the ALDI sale and the Babysense7 separately (currently found on ebay for $189), the combination would cost you $289!

Did I mention I feel like a n00b?

  • We got given a proper monitor for the first kid, but for the second I have just used a wifi camera (could be a Xiaomi, don't really remember). Picture quality is better, easy to set up, and will have a use for it after.

    • some are paranoid of backdoor feed with those IP cams

      • +4

What is someone going to do with a picture of my child sleeping?

        • -1

nothing, just enjoy getting watched 24/7 by others

          not just your baby

    • -2

same here but my old xiao fang refuses to connect now.

Kid is close to not needing one anymore so might grab this, use it for 89 days then return it lol

      • +2

custom firmware should fix your xiao fang issue. Search on the xiao fang deals, the info has been repeated a few times.

        • Thanks sir!

  • We have two Oricom units and can advise they keep losing their connection to the camera in a single story 4 bedroom house. I've been told by their customer support that its linked to WiFi interference. When the monitor loses connection to the camera, it will start beeping which is rather frustrating in the middle of the night.

Before this, i purchased the app DORMI which works much better than these cameras.

  • Cheaper to just re-purpose an old phone and use Duo, WhatsApp, Hangouts, etc.

    • +2

The only problem with using that is no night vision, which is a big thing.

      • Night vision on some phones is pretty impressive now.

      • +1

        no night vision

Almost all phone cameras work fine with infrared, so all you need is an IR illuminator. These are readily available on Ebay, but usually they don't come with a power supply, you'll need to buy a power supply (usually 12V) as well.

It's easy to check if your phone's camera is sensitive to IR: Use the phone's camera to view the front of an IR remote control, and press a button on the remote control. If you see the remote's IR lamp light up, your camera can "see" infrared.

  • I'm in the market for some type of baby monitor or WiFi camera and open to any options.
Since there's some time before this deal if any one wants to share opinions on setups they've had it would be appreciated.
(First kid so don't mind spending a bit but would like to know if people found all the extra gadgets worth it)

    • Wifi camera works perfectly well. This is the one I have an it does everything it needs to, including giving access on mobile while you are out:

      https://www.banggood.com/International-Version-Xiaomi-Mijia-…

They occasionally come up cheaper, I think mine landed at about $55 AUD.

      • "giving access on mobile while you are out" great for when you and partner step out to the pub in the evening lol

        • Haha potentially, but it's mainly useful if we have someone else looking after the kids and we can confirm the baby is in bed and asleep - if she is up and restless we might go home earlier to ensure she sleeps, if she is out like a log we're happy to let it go.

      • I am currently using the mijia 1080p and it's significantly clearer than the ones that rotate

        https://m.catch.com.au/product/xiaomi-mijia-1080p-fhd-smart-…

        • Rotation is useful for some things - when the kid decides to sleep in the blind spot corner of the cot, got to get moving to find her..

          • @pdtmathieson: Ah, it's very wide angled, I just prop it on a box on a corner (prob should wall mount it though) but gets the whole cot + more

In almost all cases the sensing pads are pointless marketing hype that trying to upsell new parents to spend more than they should.
I got a used one from Gumtree for $40 and it comes with those sensing pads. I unplugged the pads after the first month because I found it creates annoyance more than convenience. A basic video/voice monitor is all I need.

    • Hard to talk new parents out of all of this stuff, but absolutely agree.

    • We're just about to have our first child and I've been looking at the Nanit cameras which monitor babies breathing and sleep habits, provide analytics etc. They're expensive however I'm willing to pay for the peace of mind. I share your opinion that the sensing pads on some monitors are a gimmick but the Nanit techology looks legitimate.

      • +1

All unnecessary - but I understand it can be hard to get peace of mind. Sometimes you just need to let go, they will put you in that situation soon enough anyway.

      • +1

I'm willing to pay for the peace of mind.

That's where the manufacturers got you.
        "Peace of mind"

Read this. Often the extra sensors give you no protection at all.
        https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/sle…

        • I read the article and understand your POV however if it helps my partner have a good night sleep (even from a placebo effect) then I'll pay for it. The Nanit doesn't use pads ect, it has a different method of monitoring breathing via proprietary wireless sleepwear and camera monitoring algorithms. I guess I'll find out if it works or not over the next few months…

  • "Secure"? So it has two factor authentication then? That's a critical oversight on these things.. they don't tend to have it!

  • If I have the 850 unit (pan/tilt camera), can I get this and use both cameras off the one monitor?

    • How much did you pay for the 850? How is the unit ? I'm considering buying it from Gumtree today

  • Been using Xiaomi XiaoFang 1080p Camera as baby monitor, cheaper option and does the job…y spend so much..
