Landed a Job with a Bank - Is It Standard to Do Checks?

Hey everyone first post on here.

I just landed a job with a bank and they said they have to do some checks which takes 4 weeks roughly to complete.

I have never had a issue in the past with police or crimes, but is there anything I should be worried about or is this standard process now?

Do you mean a criminal history check?
A lot of jobs have these, they are nothing to worry about :)

unless the OP has something to worry about

they are nothing to worry about

that's a bit presumptuous, having said that I'm presuming you don't know the OP

      • Nah I don’t have anything to worry about I was more interested in what they are checking but it seems pretty standard.

      • It was based on their post which states they have no criminal history, if I am interpreting "never had an issue in the past with police or crimes" correctly.

No criminal history should mean nothing to worry about on a criminal history check, I should hope.

    Standard practice.

  • Nope, perfectly normal standard procedure. If you have nothing to be worried about in your past then don't worry.

  • Depending on your role, they may do a bankruptcy check as well.

    • Branch manager role

Pretty standard practice, my guess is probably checking:
    - Name/ person
    - PR or citizenship (ensure you can work in aus)
    - Uni Degrees
    - Police Check

Westpac may also check for high yielding investment car.

        Is a 4x4 ride a high-yielding investment car? 🤔

    • Exactly these, you should be fine. And if anything does come up, they'll give you a call. Bigger fish to fry, like what high yield BMW to invest in.

Congrats on landing the new job!

      • Thanks mate

I just went through this earlier this year. No big deal at all so long as you didn't lie in your application.

      • Even if you did lie, it's not a big deal as long as you did not leave a paper trail.

      • No lies my Cv is clean I didn’t leave my previous work on great terms as my manager clashed with me but that shouldn’t be a issue I wouldn’t think

Issues with your previous manager don't matter. All this company would ever do is simply confirm that you worked there.

          • @tallkid123: Awesome thanks for that I was hoping that was the case as I didn’t want it to effect my new role

  • Standard practice to check past employment details, educational qualifications, professional memberships, citizenship, criminal record, and maybe one or two other things.

You've not been dodgy in your past life or your application, have you?

  • What an odd question.

Did you think they wouldn't do any checks whatsoever and just tell you to rock up to work next Monday?

OP must've been dodgy on his/her application.

Just FYI it's spelled "cheques" in Australia and although people don't use them much, you'll still have to issue them if you work for a bank

    • Did you even read the body?

      • Do you even understand sarcasm?

        • -1

should be voted on negative for not reading the body and positive who thought that was sarcasm

      • +3

Oh just read it, sorry. Four weeks seems like a long time for a cheque to clear OP. I'd be a bit concerned if it was my bank

    • +1

      That made me laugh

The lack of humour here lately is amazing. Such a serious lot, "cheques and balances" the standard "fair" for anyone who works the circus thats a bank.

      Look up "puns" fellas

They want to make you fit their banking culture.
