Easy there, easy fellas.
Ausclimate is an Australian company, so they probably worked with Winix on the specs, so perhaps your scepticism is unwarranted.
The racism certainly was.
Is this really needed in Melbourne though?
Don't see the smoke coming back (hope I'm right)These can literally be a life saver for some people with serious allergies.
Maybe not this season (hah… only because most everything that can be burnt has burnt), but what about next season?
Like you said everything is burnt. Probably won't see anything on this scale ever again.
If you feel you need it, get it. Simple as that.
I find it funny that so many people rush to get these air purifiers because of the smoke, like it's going to poison you or something. Do you have allergies? Do you have kids? Do you live near the bush fires (western Victoria, SE NSW, Canberra)? If the answer is no, you probably don't need it.
Are you a doctor or just a comedian though?
Neither.
Like I said, if you don't have allergies, don't have kids, don't live near the bush fires, you probably don't need one. I think a lot of people living in "Melbourne" (not Victoria) are overrating.
@Slugoid: Yes, you shouldn't listen to doctors or the Australian Medical Association. What would they know about health effects?
Poor air quality caused by bushfire smoke posing serious risk for healthy people too, health experts warn
Your assuming it won't help pollen or other impurities in the air.
Learn to read, I said if you don't have allergies, you probably don't need one.
If an air purifier can't filter pollen or impurities, then it's called a fan.
Are you a scientist?
So are they any good?
How do they compare to the more expensive $7-800 ones?
Are they much better than the cheaper ones that get posted on here?
Are filters universal or easy/cheap to get?You should also consider the Xiaomi 3 in your research. Can be had for $260 on ebay (for the global version)
Thanks will do.
I don't want to breath in the smoke again.
I can vouch for the Xiaomi. After getting one and having it run for only a few hours, I instantly ordered a second one, so we can have one in each bedroom at night, and my wife can take one to work during the day (yes, her work should pay for it, but they won't, they don't even have a company card to order it on!).
I'm less than 15km from what is now a 100,000 hectare fire, and this air purifier has been a life saver on the bad smoke days (fortunately the last few days have been smoke free, for the first time in weeks, but it's expected to get bad again very soon).
They are good.
The difference to the $800 one is that has a "pet filter", which does literally nothing for smoke pollution, if that is your intended reason for purchase. It also has a better sensor but ultimately, if you want to get that serious, a dedicated sensor unit is going to be substantially better than the sensors in any air purifier. And lastly, it is rated for larger size rooms.
Filters are easy to find for this range (but stock levels right this moment may not), as it is well established and has a lot of history. I don't know about unofficial filters but I personally wouldn't use them.
There are cheaper units but this brand has a long history of actually working and their filtration system is battle tested.
The key thing is that all purifiers will advertise 99.7% filtration rate and they will…eventually. But what happens is something called leakage, in which the air passing through only filters at a rate of say 70-80% each pass (or worse), as there is space around the filtration system that allows air to pass through untreated, taking far longer to clean a room (and keep up with new dirty air).
The Winix rate very highly at preventing leakage. You get what you pay for basically.
Bought 2 from Costco few months ago when the air was pretty bad.
This just works perfectly. Loving it
I have the 5 stage one in a 30m2 room, works quite well
I've got a 5 stage one we ordered a long time ago from https://www.ausclimate.com.au/ but geez are they pricey compared to this one! Filters are so expensive as well. Can't complain though, it does a good job cleaning the air especially cooking smells
After communicating, reviewing, discussing and researching of air purifiers myself,
Smoke in Melbourne few weeks back are extremely harmful to human being regardless you are allergic, child or old person,
Media, Medical article and medical professional do state of Air Quality issue in Melbourne pass weeks.Melbourne once recorded the worst air in the entire earth few weeks ago.
AQI is index of Air quality measure,
AQI below 50 indicate as having good air,
above 300 is hazardous and extremely harmful, < Please refer to Airvisual app to learn of AQI level and current AQI in victoria>P2/N95 mask is essential when the AQI above 300 level,
I saw 900 a day before Media stated Melbourne recorded worst air in the whole earth, I couldn't sleep as how I should do to protect my family from this disaster situation.Believe me, I also doubt if it is necessary of this air purifier in Melbourne and I haven't purchased yet, but about 4 people bought air purifier near me and they were very happy with their purchase. The model people near me purchased were Philips 1000, Xiaomi 3H and Phlips 5000 series.
Based on my research as a purchasing professional, Winix is highly ranked and recommended but please keep in mind that pro 4 covers less than 50 sqms, may not be enough for living room area depending on the size. Winix pro 5 covers larger areas and both of them for me are luxury but I do believe they will do great job. Breville Air purifier is another good brand and popular, currently they are sold out in all around Melbourne.
Xiaomi seem not too great with their sensitivity so keep in mind.
also keep in mind of whether you are able to afford the cost of filter which you will need to replace regularly 1-2 times per year.
Not denying the health concerns. But, the Indians and Chinese survive just fine amongst their pollution. They seem indestructible. Cup of concrete?
They seem indestructible.

You don't die overnight.
"Survive" is not a good indicator. You can survive with a lot of illness, some people prefer to survive while also being healthy, it's subjectively more pleasant.
Kept me up at night worrying about the health implications too, not just as an asthmatic but as a parent.
When the levels in Melbourne got to many times hazardous, our masks hadn't arrived yet but luckily the Xiaomi Pro that I'd ordered did in time for the last really bad day. We have a big, open, cathedral-ceiling house but between the Xiaomi and our ionising air conditioner it actually worked well over a few hours to clear the air inside.
For the future - even if that's years away until the next such event - I'm going to have a few box fans and square furnace-filters (MERV 13 or better) in to make up some extra purifiers cheaply and easily if required.
Based on my research as a purchasing professional, Winix is highly ranked and recommended
dude how much they pay u to write those ?
a small (38.2sqm) air purifier usually cost you around $300, this one cost 50% more becoz of what?
better filters therefore it cost more? nop! the replacement filters ar about the same price as others,
better sensors ? nop, whats the point of having a great sensor when u don't even have display to show the measurements?
Its clearly overpriced !!!!
how u call urself a "purchasing professional" when u write something like this ?Xiaomi seem not too great with their sensitivity so keep in mind.
this Winix don't even have a lcd to display the numbers ! Only green oj and red to indicate the air quailty, plz tell me how is it better then xiaomi give u a acture number?! the number maybe a little bit off but still better then only 3 readings.
Haha..ok.
I didn't get paid to write the comment and i also cared about 39 sqms the coverage. I have been more on Winix side based on product review website, Winix as well are heavily promoting they were hieghest recommended air purifier in Product review.com.au.
My friend used philips 1000 and jusy bought extra air purifier xiaomi air purifier 3H and he explained me based his experience with Xiaomi unit, which stated 1 and not operative at most of time, then it was few minutes slower start oprating than Philips 1000 series.
I am fan of Xiaomi and I do have many xiaomi products but i wanted to pointout based on what i searched and heard from people i trust.
In short, I didnt buy Winix but I ordered Philips 1000 series from amazon yesterday. I was literally in front of Winix aisle in Ringwood Costco but i did worry of 39 sqms coverage and i saw Amazon au had stock for Philips 1000 in stock for $279 and i ordered.
Still i think winix unit is one of best, it isnt my unit in the end.
One of my other friend got Winix yesterday, i might share here after i hear her experience.
i got both philips 1000 and the xiaomi air purifier 3, i would say their sensitivities ar pretty much the same.
xiaomi got 400m3/h particle CADR and philips 1000 only got 270 m3/h, i can sense it got much more airflow then philips 1000,
but the down side is xiaomi's sensor located at the back of the machine, when u put it against the wall u will get a slower reaction time, i guess thats what ur friend did wrong.btw u should get the Xiaomi, not very good build quality for the Philips 1000,
filters ar not perfect fited, impeller blades ar not balanced it started to wobble in speed 2+.
and some times the sensor will go nuts…@samelight: I would agree with you, but unsure if I want to spend more money for extra air purifier.
I will consider near the future.
for reference, costco dropped these down to $399.95 but not available all the time (and def not available during peak demand during bushfires)
I have pretty large kitchen/living room area, around 88sqm.
I suspect this model is sufficient enough to clean/filter the food smell during cooking? (I might need 2 of them, as it says around 30sqm coverage per device)
Also, does anyone know how much is the filter price roughly?
I haven't bought the unit yet, but yes coverage stated is pretty small. Philips 1000 air the lowest version in Philips range has coverage area of upto 63 m2, so I'm confused if I go with Winix.
filter seem to be sold online (Ausclimate distributor of Winix)RRP of $140 which will last for a year.
