  • Any other tvs u can get for this price? Seems like a good deal to me but I hvent been clued in on tvs for ages!

Panasonic TH-P50U20 full HD plasma has the best picture on a 50 inch television. 3D is just a Hollywood gimick. There are health issues surrounding 3D. You can buy this Panasonic tv for less than $1000.

  • looks good I believe. reviews look good also.
Does anyone here have a smart/connected TV yet? Wonder if its worth spending extra $200 or so for similar with smart TV

    • I have a 50' sumsung tv, can use it to connect Internet, can play couple media format, would these features considered as "smart"?

      • yeah well that's all I would want it for… streaming videos etc, maybe some browsing…
But I do not believe this tv allows you to do that

        • but I just saw this also so guess it will do what i want. but it doesnt connect directly to the net.

          Allshare

Bring it all together. AllShare wirelessly connects to compatible mobile devices through DLNA technology so the movies, photos and music stored on them can be viewed, listened to and shared on your smart TV.

        • Hi mick123,

You cannot browse with this TV but you can stream videos, pics, mp3's etc.

It also allows you to use a whole host of Samsung built in Apps too like, facebook, AFL TV etc too!

        • i've got this model, bought it from HN 2 months ago 1280-50 amex cashback +3 years waranty.
the tv almost perfect, 3d is nice too, new bluetooth glasses used not ir.it plays almost everything through dlna and u can control it from your ipad/iphone with the free samsung app.
It doeasn't support samsung apps though(it's a series 5) and it's menu(especially when you turn the tv on) is a bit slower than my series 6 samsung plasmas

      • apps (weather, news), small games etc.
        Basically time wasters.

You can't just 'pay an extra $200' for a smart tv, smart Tv features are usually attached to newer models, meaning there are more advantages to the sets (newer panels, better processing etc.)

    • I have a Samsung Blu-Ray player and it does some pretty good smart TV stuff, better than my new Panasonic plasma.

I reckon you shouldn't buy a TV based on its smart TV features, unless you are comparing two products that are already very similar and it might then tip you one way or the other.

  • I got an LG Plasma 3D Smart TV from JB Hi Fi for $899, they don't have it advertised for that price anymore but it's worth asking if they can do it for you…

      Samsung > LG anyday

      • Lucky if it Goes…

      • back when TVs were more expensive, LG used to stand for "Lost a couple of Grand"

        • I always knew it as Lousy Garbage.

    • Which model LG did you get? I saw a 3d plasma selling for that price a few weeks ago on sale, but it wasn't a smart tv

  • How many pairs of glasses included?

  • Thanks again for the bargain guys!!

Sure chir0nex- what are you after?

    I have this one:

    • Sweet thanks, thats pretty cheap too but i just placed my order for the full HD 3D one!. Thanks!

But i won't be back in Melb until This sunday (and leaving again next wednesday). Could delivery be organised for between sunday 28th and wednesday 31st?

      Thanks!!

  • how prices have come down over the years.
I bought a Sharp 37" lcd for the same price 2 years ago..

  • What specials do you have for 42"?

  • Delivery to sydney :(

    • Sure! Whats you postcode?

  • I've been looking at purchasing this exact model for the past month, waiting for my tax return to arrive. This is the cheapest i have found by far.

  • This one or the PS51D6900 for $250ish more??

    Any opinions?

  • I was looking at both models, but i wouldnt use the PVR Rec function as i use foxtel for recordin. Other than that the picture was the same as the PS51D6900. i can't see the point of paying an extra $300 for PVR Rec and solical TV.

  • great find OP, thanks!

that panasonic you linked is smaller and is not 3D

To be fair, you have to compare apples with apples.

a lot of people do care about 3d and about 1 extra inch :P
next time try to compare similar things! extra size and extra options DO cost more! Otherwise let's buy a HD ready 50'' tv for half the money! From a "normal" viewing distance you cannot count pixels!!!

    Who cares about 3D?

Picture quality is the name of the game.

From a normal viewing distance you could not pick whether a tv was 50 inch or a 51 inch.

Before, you purchase the Samsung PS51D550 compare the picture quality in a shop with the Panasonic TH-P50U20A plasma. In my opinion Panasonic make better plasmas. The Panasonic full HD plasma range is available for less than $1000. To pay $999 for the Samsung PS51D550, you have to be joking. Samsung make excellent LED-LCD screens, while Panasonic makes the best Plasmas in my opinion.

    • You don't value 3D and are going to ignore any argument on that basis. We get it. Your personal preference for a smaller screen that you subjectively think looks better that doesn't have 3D is very interesting and all, but it's friggin weird.

Firstly, it is not advised to base your buying decision on how TVs look in the store as they are usually set on dynamic mode.

Secondly, the newer Samsung plasmas have been reviewed very well in comparison to Panasonic plasmas. Although they do not have the awesome black levels of the Panasonics, they make up for it with a better colour management system and more calibration settings (for instance, a 10p white balance calibration).

Picture quality should be judged AFTER it has been calibrated, not before.

    • Think it depends eh. Panas have better contrast, but generally can have poor refresh issues and some other issue many forums discuss.
I think for the price people won't be that picky, as I think Samsung have better colours and design. I've used both brands before and don't have a major preference. But have a look in store at Panas and sometimes you can see the refresh issues at 50hz, and sometimes at 100hz when compared to other tvs.
samsung plasmas are also generally better than their edge lit LEDs for picture quality. the only benefit will be a sharpness due to a finer DPI type set up of an LCD vs Plasma. but only really noticeable when viewing up very close.

It is recommended that before choosing the Samsung PS51D550 over the Panasonic TH-P50U20, consider this:

There has been research published on the side effects of 3D televisions. This research was funded by Samsung but highlighted the detrimental aspects of 3D televisions. "Recent increased usage of stereo displays has been accompanied by public concern about potential adverse effects associated with prolonged viewing of stereo imagery."

    http://www.journalofvision.org/content/11/8/11

Panasonic makes the best Plasma televisions. Samsung makes the best LED-LCD televisions. 3D is just a fad.
Panasonic TH-P50U20 full HD plasma televisions are ticketed in shops for less than $1000. $999 for a Samsung Plasma is not a bargain.

  • How does warranty work for interstate purchases

    • yes pls let us know. if warranty direct with Samsung, you have a deal

      • Hi Mick,

Warranty is with samsung Australia - warranty is applicable Australia wide.

        Hood that helps!

    • Hi viper,

The warranty is with samsung Australia - no issues with interstate purchase :)

  • My housemate bought this exact TV, about 5-6 weeks ago. Paid $1100. He got 2 pairs of 3D glassess included in the box, he said it was only suppose to come with 1 pair.
It's a good TV. You can connect to LAN. Tried a belkin wifi usb dongle, but it didn't work, it said you have to use a samsung specific one.
Couldn't play TS files (mpeg2) from my pvr, when i plugges in a usb stick in the side.
    Only 1 RCA input.
Easy to swivel the screen. Touch buttons on the front.
The glasses sync with the screen.
You can play music from your phone, i'm not sure if that's using wifi or bluetooth.
When you press the EPG button (guide), the current channel you're watching will often stop, while the epg is loading or something. That's annoying.
