Recommend a Toilet

Hi all,

I'm looking at doing a bathroom reno. What do people recommend for a toilet, I'm currently looking at the Caroma Luna, back to wall with S trap.

If I was to give a criteria for what I'm after it would be that the toilet bowl not to have a narrow throat or long tapers as there are people in the family that can do serious staining.

I really like the look of a back to wall toilets but has anyone had issues with repairing leaks with the water connection from the wall?
Only reason was because when I tried to turn off the stop valve for the toilet it didn't work. I just keep turning the handle but nothing happened.

Also is rimless toilet the real thing?
It looks gimmicky to me, the extra cost for an easier clean and potential of the flush spilling out of the bowl is really off putting.

Thanks

Get those self washing toilets, like in Japan! Make sure you put a power plug near your toilet!

    • And take out a second mortgage to afford one.

  • +1 for rimless toilets easy to clean.

they don't make toilets like they use to, wide bowl with almost vertical sides

    • make sure you put a power point next to the toilet on the wall.
    • The Caroma Luna Cleanflush is nearly $600 it is bordering the limit.
It is not going to break the bank but the thought of spending and extra $100 to get spilt toilet water on the odd occasion when it flushes isn't entertaining.
The reviews are 50/50 on it working correctly when I looked online.

    • and an ipad holder on the wall if you know what i mean

Squat toilet with bum gun hose. Squatting is good for your back and bowel.

I had a thorough look/research for these for our future house as squatting on a normal toilet is annoying (though I've been doing it my entire life so it's not that bad) and didn't come up with much at all! It's even hard to find anything other than the basic porcelain plate from online stores in asia, let alone finding someone who can do the install here in Australia. No idea what we're gonna do to be honest.

  • Check out japanese toilets while you're at it. The heated/musical/bidet seats are an obvious and easy addition, but the newer ones will also have auto flush, auto seat raising etc.

  • Japanese toilets are awesome
But super costly. Like I mean you can build a bathroom for the cost of some of them lol.
Plus they need to be wired into the electrical (legally you can’t have a power point as close to the toilet as you would need to just plug it in)

  • Ok I will have to remove Japanese toilets of the list. I simply don't have the $$$$.

    • But you could install a normal toilet and then install heated seat with sprayer. There's lots of retro-fit options to achieve the Japanese function.

  • The rimless toilets work well. Some newer/refurbished shopping centres have them (Caroma brand).

Hole in the ground, saw dust, easy

    FERGUSON. The King of bowls

Bud, the toilets of today aren't worthy of the name. They come in designer colors and they're too low. And when you flush them, they make this little weak, almost apologetic sound. Not the Ferguson. It only comes in white. And when you flush it, 'BA-WOOSH'. That's a man's flush, Bud. A Ferguson says, 'I'm a toilet. Sit down and give me your best shot'."

  • Priority one is easy cleaning. Priority two is easy access to the adjustment screws holding the seat in position - there's nothing worse than a man-eating dunny :-)

    Go for a full-size suite.

Don't get the in-wall cistern as they can be a major pain in the arse to fix.

The quick-release seats are good, but make sure that the fixings that attach to the bowl are stainless because they can rust. The soft closing seats are really nice, and they can always be swapped out in future years in necessary.

When you're looking, go to a Reece or similar showroom, actually sit on the suite to get an idea of size (because you'll be stuck with it for the foreseeable future).

Caroma is a good brand. We've got a Porcher, but it's a smaller bowl and seat, and honestly, it's really annoying to clean because it's smaller.

Whatever you get, make sure you install a bidet. Like this one.
