Just a reminder that they were hacked in the past and only publicly announced it when it was exposed:

And afaik are still yet to replace their certificates

      https://nordvpn.com/blog/official-response-datacenter-breach…

You've not paid attention to the story, like many others, hence why the discounts have become so deep.

'Hacked' isn't the right term, I've mentioned this on ozbargain before, so to copy paste:

I work in IT (specifically web development). Nord really wasn't 'hacked'. They had a server breach in a single server in Finland, where no unencrypted user data could be accessed. The most a competent hacker could have done with this vulnerability is that they could have potentially performed a man-in-the-middle attack if they also had access to the user's requesting network - very, very unlikely.

Nord are a large provider and so will have a large target on them. If we rejected all providers with any security issues whatsoever we'd be left with providers with only very small network or providers that don't report security issues. The only security issue of concern here is the time-frame that the breach was reported. It's pretty normal to not report it straight away - you want to be sure that the problem is fixed before you let everyone know about it. But it did take several months, maybe too long.

      There's a fairly unbiased run-down here: https://restoreprivacy.com/nordvpn-hack/

I'm not suggesting that nord is better or worse than any other providers, but this 'hack' is really not the security issue that many seem to think it is.

This whole statement is pretty much void

They were definitely hacked and they definitely didn't disclose it.

The fact that they are a large provider and kept this to themselves makes it 10 times worse

They blamed the data centre provider because of something that was left active a remote administration tool…

That was advertised on the providers website.

All you need to do is watch the Twitter feed from the security consultants that were posting as this all went down.

All you need to do is watch the Twitter feed from the security consultants that were posting as this all went down.

Everything else aside, this is quite a horrible way to properly evaluate security. A proper post-mortem will always be far more accurate and complete than any kind of live thread. Live threads often include a lot of speculation that becomes invalid as more information is known.

        • They weren't 'definitely hacked'. A security breach that resulted in nothing except access to an expired TLS key would not be considered a successful hack by anyone. They had a security breach, but they were not necessarily hacked.

The timeframe of when they disclosed the breach is of concern, but not unprecedented. If there has been no access of customer data, then it is normal practice to ensure that the breach is fully contained before going public, otherwise you're just drawing attention to a security hole.

Again, I'm not endorsing them or their response, but this breach really was quite a small event.

Probably wouldn't trust these guys if you want to use a VPN for anonymity or anything that requires obfuscation, but this is still a great price. Nord will work ok if you want to watch US Netflix or anything of that nature, worth getting this if that's what you're looking for. Definitely wouldn't use them for anything other than that though.

    • +1

Beware as per my chat with nordvpn yesterday. OpenVPN config no longer support streaming Netflix to smart tvs which is a bummer. Only method to watch Netflix US is phone app to watch on device or accessing via computer browser and using HDMI cable.

      • I assume if you can load the nordVPN app on your tv/box you're fine?

        • According to support no longer works on android boxes.

  • +1

I signed up and it tracked at 30%??? What's going on?

    • Have submitted enquiry.

      • +7

No need. This will be adjusted in your account tomorrow (Wed) morning. Checked and noticed the first few sales tracked at the old rate due to a timing error. If it’s not fixed by 11am, please PM me. Enjoy the evening :)

        • +1

Too late. Maybe you can ask for your team to ignore the support enquiry. You have a good evening too.

          • @kyle: This should now be reflecting correctly in your account. I've also arranged to have the ticket closed. Thanks for your patience.

        • Mines only tracking at 60% now , whats going on?

          • +1

@belowzero: As per the rate on site, 90% expired at midnight and has been 60% since. Did you not check the rate on click through? Not sure why this post isn’t marked expired, so have reported to mods.

            • @tightarse: jesus. will have to request a refund, what a sick burn.

              • +1

@belowzero: If you haven’t cancelled yet, PM me and I’ll see if there’s anything I can do. Thanks.

Competition fails to deliver low prices or efficiency yet again: vendor is making at least 800% profit on the sale price.

  • Hi , I’ve signed up on 31/10/2019 and still waiting for the credit in a pending status.
CashRewards have confirmed that I must wait over 3 months !!!!
So, remember the credit is not that immediate as it sounds.

    • ESTIMATED APPROVAL
      Up to 95 days

As it sounds? Pretty much expect any cashback to take pretty close to the maximum days.

  • Currently experiencing problems with connections from China. You have to manually change server settings everyday.

  • I'm a bit skeptical since Cashrewards didn't work for me last time.

  • The advertised Cashback rate is based on the reported amount, not the paid amount.

Yes t5ou won't get 90% cashback, it more likely 85-86%

I used the 88% back in Sept, it was actually closer to 84%.

On the is side NordVPN is very quick to connect and has been quite decent for speed.

  • Can nord do US Netflix consistently and without hassle?

    • +1
      • All the comments there are from a year ago. Anyone know whether anything has changed? I'll like to get Netflix US, but not if I have to hunt for a new VPN server every time I want to watch something.

        • its currently working on my iPhone with iOS app.
my cause of grief is them no longer supporting smart tvs, android boxes or OpenVPN for streaming purposes.

          • @bashar20: Man that blows, I bought Nord last time for this exact reason when I moved into my new place :(

It would still work via screencast though wouldn't it?

            • @mangobango: Screen casting doesn’t work. Even when using their DNS settings on my Samsung smart TV.
My only options now are watch on my iPhone or plug laptop via HDMI which is not that convenient.

Still waiting for my “cash rewards” from the last deal. Have to wait 3 months

    • +1

Mine got completely rejected by Nike.

  • I'm a three year subscriber paid under $40 and started to use it every day

After the breach became public I now only use it if I specifically require it

When signing up, do you select "Australia"?? It adds extra 10% for GST, does it matter if I just leave it as United States?

    • +2

I saw in a Reddit post to just select a country with 0%, that's what I've done. Have been waiting on this offer to come around again. I'm old school and still DL torrents. LOL

      • Can anyone confirm Cashback is honoured regardless of the country selected?

        • Mine tracked without issue. I selected US as country to avoid tax.

  • +2

I am on them since 2018. Hopeless IN China when I went there in May2019. Complaint to them but no use. Never NORDVPN again. And their security breach in Oct made it even worse for them.

  • why is it all the VPN deals look like a scam?

  • Bought one. Nice. Paid 182.06 AUD with AUD 158.91 cashback.

    • -1

did the cashback amount get recognised straight away?

      • +1

        takes less than 1 hour.

I use NordVPN because it is really cheap and it works. I solely use it for getting around geoblocking however, as you would have to be insane to think any VPN service makes you anonymous online. They have your credit card details. They know who logs on and when. Do you really trust them to not keep any logs just because they pinky swear they don't?

VPN providers would be honey pots for three letter intelligence agencies if people commonly used them for launching attacks or accessing illegal material.

    • A bit of a noob when it comes to VPN services here, but do you have any insights as to how Nord and PureVPN fare against one another for speeds, whatnot? I'm looking for something that I can use while abroad to effectively connect to Aus services (e.g. Foxtel Go), whereas I see most people try access US servers, etc.

edit - realistically, only anticipate needing it for a year

    • They only have your credit card details if you gave it to them. One could use a pre-paid card and a non specific email address, fake name, overseas address etc when signing up. In turn you could easily remain anonymous.
Having said that if you use Cashrewards when signing up all that goes out the door as Cash Rewards would have your details. In turn not a method of subscribing if anonymity was required. This is more for geo blocking workarounds or for using if on a public wifi to safeguard your browsing etc.

Cashback tracked pretty much straight away. My out of pocket worked out to be $23.64
Shame I have to wait 3 months to withdrawal the cashback however.

  • Didn't work in China, made me looking for another VPN while in China which was really difficult as google/gmail were already blocked.

  • Last tracked from cashrewards at Wed, Jan 15, 2020 02:51 PM, paid within a minute or 2. At 3:14 PM, cashrewards has yet to reflect the transaction.

  • Don't forget to cancel automatic payments. Otherwise you'll get charged US$129 or whatever it has changed to in Jan 2023. :)

  • Well, I went ahead and gave it a crack - got an error message from Nord saying payment/checkout failed, yet my card has been debited the full amount, I don't have any service actually recognised/activated and I imagine there is probably some risk it has potentially voided the 'new' customer (1 time only) cashback option too. Sigh.

  • Im getting a 404 page when I click through from Cashrewards.

  • My page says 60%, not 90%?

    • 90% expired midnight AEDT.

  • I just had my $160 cashback reduced to $51

    • Good news. They fixed it!

  • For anyone else not informed, Nord VPN knew of a breach 19 months ago and didn't tell anybody, thinking it wasn't a big deal. This is a very big deal for privacy, and for some, the life of activists in country's where they are persecuted.

In the mean time, they pumped out massive ad campaigns everywhere online, knowing full well of this breach.

They only bothered to tell people about it after they were caught by a third party who discovered there was a breach. Can you imagine if the third party never found it? Nord would never tell anyone.

I wouldn't give them a cent. Any ethical company would immediately disclose to the public that there has been a breach. How can you trust Nord when their primary market is centered around privacy and encryption.

The keys, however, could still have been used in active attacks, in which hackers use leaked keys on their own server to intercept and decrypt data.

    • Already discussed above. Not a big concern.
