Hi, does anyone know if an electrical safety certificate is needed for replacing an existing smoke alarm? Thanks
Does Electrical Safety Certificate Needed for Replacing an Existing Smoke Alarm?

OP is in Perth?
Yes I am in Perth
I am in Western Australia, so does the same rule apply?
I found this… on the WA commerce website…
Who can install smoke alarms?
Smoke alarms required to be permanently connected to the mains power supply require a licensed electrician to either connect or disconnect the smoke alarm.
So, it would stand to reason that messing with anything 240v, you would need to be licensed. Hard wired smoke alarms are no exception.
Same thing.
When installing mains powered smoke alarms, always use a licensed electrician.

By law, an electrical contractor/electrician who carries out any electrical installing work on a consumer's premises must provide an electrical safety certificate to the person for whom the work was done within 28 days of completion of the work

Thanks, I will ask for it.
Just had some done in WA. Yes, Certificate Required.
Thanks, I will ask for it.
If the new smoke alarm is exactly the same as the old one, you should be able to replace it without touching the mains wiring. The old one will most likely just "twist" off and the new one will twist back on. The base plate with the mains wiring stays on the roof. Use the instructions from the new one to work out how to do it.
Thanks Mod, all solved, please delete this thread. thanks
