15.6" i7 2630QM 2GHz 4GB DDR3 1GB ATI $999 -> $599.40 (or Less with OW Price Match)

830

Only a week ago OzBargain had this same unit highlighted for $787:
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/50666

This laptop model is retailed at $787 at Dicksmiths, Officeworks, JB, and online reviews report this i7 model offering the best bang for your dollar based on its specs.

Now for $569.43 you can score this same unit.

Get a quote from Harvey Norman with their 40% off - $999 -> $599.40
Take the quote to Officeworks and get a further 5% competitor price match - $599.40 -> $569.43

I did this today without any issue, just obviously dont tell HN your going to officeworks ;P
Heres proof of receipt (note I threw in a laptop bag on top):
Photo of Receipt

This is a crazy price for a i7 unit with a dedicated GPU and 4GB DDR3 1333 Ram. This unit has a 320Gb 5400RPM hard disk (slow, small), but most of the middle range HP products have a 5400RPM, so its best to spend $100 on a DIY SSD upgrade anyway!

price matching isn't a bargain bro! however that HN deal certainly is :P

    • +1

Absolutely - have modified the title to reflect this.

    • +3

      why am I being neg'd. :/

      • +27

        Because he's not your bro

        • +1

          XD

          I didn't mean literally ;).

  • +2

Quite nuts. Is there something wrong with this thing? Why does it keep on getting reduced while all others are staying still?

    • Actually i much prefer the look of (this) the old Macbook Pro like silver DV6 over the current brown crops of DV6-6XXX.

But yes, the reason why this getting cheaper and cheaper is because the shell/chassis is from 2010 - not that it impacts on anything of course.

      • it does impact the system though, it causes the laptop to easily overheat

        • This can also be said about the current aluminum brown shell that HP uses.

From what I gather HP still uses the same cooling system (hardware) as the previous generation. Apart from software, hardware and chassis wise… the cooling flow of air is pretty much identical.

        • +2

If you look at it closely, its the exact same chassis with some cosmetic changes.

    • Its an HP notebook. This means in the first year you have a 22% chance of it breaking and being returned.

    • HP wants to exit the consumer PC market apparently, so probably just trying to get rid of their stock.

  • Post receipt!

    • +2

i got one from office work in nunawading, after price match is $506.35…. and i will get another 10% off because will leave australia within 30 days…so this is real bargain…around 450 bucks for a I7 LAPTOP with 1g dedicated video card…

      http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j171/bryantcw/IMG_1911.jpg

      • Definitely a great price. I probably would have gotten this if that ThinkPad deal didn't come around. I've been very hesitant to buy HP since the last two I had broke (see my comments below) but I probably would have given in after seeing this price.

        • i am using thinkpad x201 right now. and i had r40 t43 t60p x300 because i am thinkpad fans, i have no idea why i need this hp laptop, but how can i resist such low price…may be this is the great gift for my family…lol

        • That's the power of OzBargain - buying crap you don't need :P

But after using this ThinkPad, I don't think I could ever use an HP again. They feel so much sturdier than the HPs (Pavilions).

      • HI mate, can you upload your receipt?

  • +2

can you please upload the receipt mate :)

    • +2

Doubting Thomas. :P Receipts in the comments

  • That price not bad for a i7 lappy, but i wonder why its so cheap

    • +10

Because HP are terrible. One of mine broke due to the 8400GS (widely documented) problem and this was a few months out of warranty. They wanted >$1000 to fix it.

Another had its touchpad mouse buttons just break from normal use.

      • +2

HP is just a branding on the shell. The internals are sourced from reputable manufacturers that you'd find supplying the likes of other major brands. They just pay to have a mainboard branded HP instead of the generic model name. The heating argument is reasonable, however I googled this and its not a issue tied to this model (search google yourself, theres one issue I found based on the shell not adjoining perfectly, but thats a one off).

        • +1

All HP computers are made by compaq which is why they are crappy, HP wanted to get into laptops and brought compaq to do it but from what I have seen compaq has not picked up any quality from HP they are still dodge and seem to just jam the bits in.

yes the internals are the same but the way they are assembled is not, i brought against my better judgement the HP mini a while back for $300 had alot of problems with it from start but the main one being a faulty solider somewhere i think which caused the screen to go off every now and than particularly when typing, to their credit HP came out several times which was good of them considering Orange IT refused to give me a receipt!!! they replaced the screen and motherboard to no avail and then the whole unit with the next model up which has been running well although a wee bit slower i think because they put in a 54000 drive in the new ones because they run Win7

So warranty wise they were really good but as long as you dont mind the odd breakdown, are not too rough with it and fully expect to throw it away at the end of the warranty than go for it

Would I buy a HP computer again over Lenovo, Toshiba, Asus or Acer, well maybe if it had 3 years warranty and was really cheap

        • +1

No doubt it is not pertaining to this model - the issue was years ago. However, HP's treatment of the issue is completely unsatisfactory.

Also, just because the internals were not manufactured by HP does not excuse them of liability for its products malfunctioning. Your argument is completely unjustified and it just sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that your purchase was a bargain. In essence, it is. This is a fantastic price for those specs. However, give it a year and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm not the only person who is disgruntled by HP. You get what you pay for, I guess.

        • +4

I am sure moat people here would be aware of th HP quality and overheating issues. But given the price its worth the risk. You get what you pay for, crappy warrenty and build is just part of it.

Overall, I reckon its a good deal and bought one.

        • +2

Kheob im the last one to defend HP and the issues pertains to ALL HP computers current and old, and no the internals is not the issue its their skill in designing and putting them together which is lousy.

I would rather buy a Asus over it but if a Asus is double the price and you can get a good extended warranty for some saving $500 is worth the risk.
i have had 3 IBM/lenovos fail completely within 2 years before the only laptop i have ever seen last 5 years is a Acer i brought for my sister and other than a RAM upgrade it has never missed a beat and is super fast with win7.

I had a sony fail 4 times in 6 months before getting rid of it so it can happen to all brands but yes again i would buy a asus i5 over this i7.

I think especially given the relative affordability of the mid range lappys these days you should only ever buy them thinking it will only last the warranty period no matter the brand.

        • For accuracy, Compaq do not "make" anything, HP acquired them some years ago but they do not manufacture/design any HP machines.

ODMs Compal Electronics and Quanta Computer manufacture machines for HP as well as other companies such as Apple, Dell and Lenovo.

They get fed the design and assemble machines for every company out there. Sometimes they even supply their own design (as an ODM) and companies will brand it accordingly. Comments like "all HP computers are made by compaq which is why they are crappy … they are still dodge and seem to just jam the bits in." are bizarre, but more importantly, factually incorrect.

    • Any thing to do with Intel recalling Sandy Bridge faulty motherboards?

      • My unit got shipped to the local OW about 4 weeks ago. So the stock is relatively new and the chip set problem would have been fixed.

  • I'd like to see someone replicate this deal. Is the 40% off from HN currently running? Anyone got a pic from instore HN?
OW have currently marked the price down in line with JB HiFi.

    • Is the HN 40%off deal running in SA?

      • Ring your local HN tomorrow. Its Brisbane/Gold Coast definitely.

      • +1

Yes, It is running in SA

  • Can you please post the receipt? I tried calling 3 local HNs and none of them offered $999 as a starting price, they were all $1499 w/ 40% off $898.

    • +5

Yes, they seem to be so dodgy as usual.

    • +5

Harvey norman online (refer to my link above) list it for $999 : The online prices should match what you'd find in-store, thats what happened for me. If not, its probably a franchised HN doing dodgies to avoid selling at a loss.

Receipt posted now in post at top

  • Yeah, receipt pls

  • Where in Sydney selling it for 599? Could anyone share his success story here? Much appreciated.

    • +1

more of 'life story' for a lot of us!

    • +1

Every store in sydney is doing 40% off HP laptops and netbooks this weekend.

      • But the prices are not the same as specified online.

  • what kind of quote did u get. just written on a piece of paper?

can we just use the receipt at officeworks?

    • No I don't think so. Coz they would factor the shipping fee and obviously they are not selling it online, both at OW or HN.

So maybe HN stores in SA are much better than the ones here.

  • i'd be happy to buy it for $599 at HN if they could confirm it as possible at their stores

i fear it might turn into a argument

  • Is there any problem with the i7 from HP, as Greyonline was also selling refurbished ones. But this is a really great price for i7 laptop.

  • This will go nicely with the AMEX $50 cashback :)

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/50042

Going to pay HN a visit tomorrow! Might get the 6134tx instead, although only i5 but comes with a faster GPU 6770m and 2 USB 3.0 ports

    • +1

Take a print out with you, I didn't pay much attention, but I am sure HN jacked up the price for this. From memory, only the DV6-4023 was sub 1000, the other sub 1000 ones was the cheapy g Series.

      http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256979142563/hp-pavi…

      • Thanks garrat, good tip… sounds like others (here and Whirlpool) have also seen some HNs jacking up the price (in usual fashion) to $1399-$1499 or even hide stock to cheat customers

Hopefully they honour online price + 40% off… otherwise might go Office Works and try with my printouts

On another note… perhaps this is the first step for HP to get out of the PC/Notebook business (by clearing existing stock for cash) as the news has been reporting today lol

  • This or lenovo? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/51178
Hate the bloody fn key position @lenovo

    • +1

Selling the Lenovo on Ebay would get you round 1000 bucks. Serious.

    • This deal has way better specs and price.

      • Hey a Thinkpad T series is not a normal HP by any means.

      • +2

There's a reason that deal got 80+ votes while this HP has less, that's because the T series thinkpad is built like a tank and is covered with 3 years warranty.

Still, this is a good deal considering the high specifications of the machine, but can't say the same about it's reliability..

    • +4

The Lenovo T series will be more rugged in terms of build quality… it's what my work place uses

It's nice to be able to hold a laptop just by the screen lol

But specs-wise the HP is better

    • +3

You can change the Fn and Ctrl buttons in the BIOS.

And I would definitely spend my money on the Lenovo (actually, I have!). I know it's an i7 vs and i5 and dedicated graphics vs integrated, but for the same price you get the exceptional build quality of ThinkPads AND 3 years warranty.

  • Just bought MLN "deal of the week" ASUS X52 for 578 last week, and now i am crying seriously. Just wanna sell this crap. Should follow OZBargain

    • +4

Ok, sounds you overpaid but the next best deal is always around the corner. As long as you are happy with your new machine which is paramount. You may end up committing suicide if you calculate the depreciation value of all your assets. My mind is tighter than my ass too, like alot of people on here.

Read this before you buy any HP
Hewlett Packard to exit computing and buy Autonomy.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14584428

    • +2

First the dumping of the TouchPad and now this. What a joke.

    • +2

so you should stop buying thinkpads as well??

they might be exiting the PC business, but it seems like they are just following IBM's example.

  • +2

    Is HP really that bad?
Coz I'm still using my 3 years old HP 8710P, impulse purchase on OzB and it been running 24/7.
My previous Dell Latitude D620 more than 5 years old still running too.
These 2 deals is temping me….again….

    • +1

I think the main concern here is their consumer line of products (Pavilion, Compaq, etc.).

      • +2

        consumer line of products

yeah with laptop I always stick with business ranges as I know they look ugly but tough! :D

        • +2

Really? I love the plain look of business laptops! It looks more… sophisticated (for lack of a better word).

        • +1

No Im not saying about colour, but in term of curve

  • +1

Pity anyone who bought the HP touchpad!

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256979142563/hp-pavi…

same price. slower CPU. better video card. slightly bigger hard drive. Name brand audio.

  • +1

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256976408387/hp-pavi…

After 40% off and OW price beat, this comes down to 681. I've been eyeing this model for a while as a desktop replacement and will be giving it a try at OW tomorrow.

$80 more for better video card, same CPU, bigger HD, worth it I think.

    • +1

oh dear….so tempting…can someone lend me the plastic card :D

    • +1

yeah, but do OW stock it lol

      • +1

Yep, because I tried getting them to price match someone's printed receipt a few weeks back. I was happy to pay 850 for it.

        • -2

Cool. I think I checked this the other night, GPU comparison with passmark was 1450 to 934 in points, so its a fairly hefty GPU increase.

I personally believe the focus is back on the CPU now voxel technology startups are popping up left right and centre

        • +1
        • ^What a joke

Yes, Notch is quite right with that Qld Startup that got a $2M Technology grant

But look at this bloke and what hes achieved:

          www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CCZIBDt1uM&feature=player_embedded#!

Refer to website for more details: http://www.atomontage.com/

        • +1

That's all nice and all but I'd like to see that translated into a real game rather than a render before we jump to any conclusions. Even Notch says in that article that voxels are horrible for animation.

    • +2

fungi the one you're linking to doesn't seem to have a dedicated video card?

      • +1

Sorry you're right, the model numbers are all too similar. The one that I'm trying to l link to has a 6770m, 2630QM and from memory a 750GB HD but sans Bluray.

    • .

    • +1

Called the store, they have the model I've been thinking about, the 6024tx and after discount it's 790. After OW pricematch it's 740.

  • +1

while this is a bargain in terms of money.. be vary wary of the HP laptop.

I bought a HP DV series a few years back, 1.5 years on: screen blue, two months later: wouldn't start. (I think that was part of the "well-documented" faults.
Friend bought HP laptop only a year ago, some sort of hard drive fault rendered it unusable.

soo, consider spending more on a more trustworthy brand.

  • Great price, but I'd pay $100 more not to have to go to the bother of reinstalling windows to get rid of all the crap HP pre loads onto your new computer.

    • +2

      …. talk about laziness.

I for one would spend the 20 minutes to reinstall windows rather than having to splurge $100 for being lazy. ;)

      …but maybe that's just me.

      • +8

I think most of us OzBargainers would do the same :)

  • -1

awesome good price, bro paid 600+ for a lenovo i5, not even close to this deal

HP is considering closing down their pc hardware business though, so maybe that news affected retailer prices lol

  • +11

It is very obvious as to why the retailers are clearing stock from HP. BestBuy sold just 20000 HP TouchPads, yet their stock was 200000. They've asked HP for stock return. With WebOS officially dead and the recent instigation of HP desktop/laptop division spin off, you buy it now and see you later, no more spare parts, no support, zilch, nada, 0 … From my personal experience (I did daily repairs of HP/Compaq desktops/laptops for 4~5 years), I assure you that HP it is the biggest rubbish ever. From intermittent mainboard issues, to GFX overheating, BIOS issues and what not. Do yourself a favor, spend the money and get ASUS or Toshiba.

    Here's couple of links:

    • +1

hey geektech, any issues with Lenovo?

I'm quite pissy my bro chose a Lenovo without asking for opinions…

      • With the power behind them at least you don't need to worry now. And a few years ahead.

      • +2

At one stage Lenovo had issues as well, but lately with the new models they have improved quite a bit. ThinkPads are quite solid. Surprisingly (or maybe not) Samsung is doing VERY well. Best bang for a buck is always ACER. They are targeting, "or were targeting HP" and Dell. It will be interesting to see who picks up the game from now on.

    • Actually I think it's under statutory condition that the manufacturer must have sufficient spare parts for a 'reasonable amount of time' after the sale of a product unless otherwise specified. Nevertheless, I'd stay clear of HP in light of the recent news.

      • @ kheob, HP does have new and refurbished parts. If the PC/laptop that you have purchased it's not in production/discontinued model, they refurbish faulty/intermittently faulty parts and re-certify them. Warranty on those parts is 3~6 months only. This is where the "fun" begins.

  • Just replaced the 320GB HDD with a 128GB SSD : It was a Western Digital out of interest

  • +6

Never buy from HP again. Got huge overheating issue. I swear that I can fry an omelet on my keyboard.

  • What you guys think bout hp pavilion dv7-6111tx?

  • It's just the beginning…..lol

  • This makes me infinitely unhappy as I bought it for 787 a couple weeks ago :(
