What Was Your Game of The Decade (2010-2019)? and Why?

I understand nostalgia may (and likely will) play a big part in this, but that's fine.

For me it's Breath of the Wild. I know this may not be a surprising or unique answer, but as someone who has always been a big Nintendo fan, I never really got into the Zelda series. I'd always get 5-10 hours into a game, get lost in one way or another, tell myself I'm coming back to it and never do.

Considering my expectations were somewhat lowered as a result, first playing Breath of the Wild was an absolute treat. The fact I could do whatever I wanted at my own pace without feeling a sense of pressure or anxiety artificially induced by the game along with knowing I could literally go anywhere without the hindrance of invisible walls, weird geometry or advanced mechanics made me feel like being a kid again in the same way I'd always explore every nook and cranny of a level in Banjo Kazooie to avoid the harder boss fights or explore every inch of a Pokemon overworld looking for hidden secrets, only now as an adult and years of gaming experience behind me to see me through the harder bits I would have avoided as a kid.

to me a story, a great STORY with amazing game-play, the feels, the graphics (for its time) the overall experience,

Play Witcher 3 through and you'll change your mind.

  • Factorio, minecraft (modded because screw vanilla minecraft), terraria, dead cells. Not sure which one to choose

    Jeez this is hard;

Best Community/Fan Project: STALKER Anomaly (All STALKER zones in one world, running in a 64 bit engine with bells and whistles). Runner up is Dylan's Far Cry 2 mod for making it into a new game that still holds up
Make your own experience: Kerbal Space Program & Kenshi & Project Zombiod, but minecraft….
Best World: RDR2 (Plan to play Witcher 3 this year, think it will win out)
Best RPG: Fallout New Vegas then Prey
Best Multiplayer: BAD COMPANY 2 BBY, & Halo Reach and Forza 4
Couch Multiplayer: Halo Reach, Skate 2 and Black Ops
One More Turn: Xcom Enemy Unknown, Battletech then Total War: Warhammer
Most Creative/Inspired Concept: Occupy White Walls

HOW HAS NO ONE MENTIONED BAD COMPANY 2?!?!?!?!?!! Its a 10 year old MP game that has more than half a dozen franchise sequels which (when I just checked steam charts) STILL has players

Also Best Community Project I forgot: Project Reality, for keeping amazing classics up to date and rocking

      • Unfortunately they haven't released a franchise sequel to Bad Company 2. Apparently they have discussed internally about creating a Bad Company 3 but they can't understand how the game differs to normal Battlefield.

      • They did, it was on page 1;
        I love the game too

  • Tetris Effects. Beautiful game.

    • Have you got a VR setup? I played it in 2D and it's okay but I heard it's absolutely amazing in VR.

      • Played it on 2D too. It's quite an experience.

Had to disable a lot of shit later cause it was affecting my Tetris lol. I prefer a clean layout.

Still, it was a good and innovative spin (no pun intended) on a classic game.

  • Hide The Salami.

    Sometimes my wife co-ops.

Being a frequent user of OzBargain, my biggest regret is that I got a deal for the Witcher 3 from here instead of paying full price for it because CDPR deserves every dollar they can earn for making that masterpiece. That's how good it is to me, thus it is undoubtedly my game of the decade.

    • I got a Steam pre-order for like $20 from a greymarket Brazilian seller. Haven't played it yet.

  • Renowned explorers

Don't know what it is? Look it up then buy it.

  • Probably Civ5 with Skyrim, Overwatch & Civ6 worth a mention.

  • Dead Space 2 and 3

Found the game to be so much fun and scary.

  • League of Legends

  • The Batman: Arkham series.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011): Sunk way too many hours playing this beautiful RPG back when it first came out. Now tackling it again with the Special Edition.
    GTA V (2013)
Ori and the Blind Forest (2015)
King's Quest (2015-2016): Great episodical "re-imagining" of the original & beloved Sierra Entertainment published King's Quest games (1980-1998).

  • 5 pages of comments and Alien: Isolation hasn't been mentioned once?
    For shame OzBargain.

Calling it the "Game of the Decade" might be a stretch, but the title of "Best Survival Horror Game of All Time" would not be hyperbole in the slightest.

If nothing else, even if you're no Survival Horror fan, the fact that the gaming world finally received an Alien/Aliens-derived game that wasn't a complete pile of sh*t is an incredible achievement, especially considering how many contenders had tried and failed in the past (something on the order of 37 licensed Alien/Aliens games since the 1980s).

More than that, it's an epic 20-something hour campaign with an atmosphere thicker than the goo covering the Queen's Nest and an obsessive attention to detail and faithfulness to the source canon that I don't think has ever been witnessed in any video game adaptations before, and for anyone who happens to like Sci-Fi, Survival Horror and the Alien franchise, like myself, it's just a sensory-nostalgia overload.

Not to mention, a developer like The Creative Assembly pulling off a Survival Horror game and Alien adaptation as good as this is the equivalent of Nintendo creating a modern military FPS that outsells Call of Duty.

My first reaction to hearing that Alien: Isolation was being developed by a studio that had only ever produced RTS games, who wanted a more hide-and-seek, Amnesia: The Dark Descent-style approach with a lone enemy, was basically: that'll never work. How happy I was to be proven wrong.

  • For me it was the Witcher 3. Being a fan of the books and the 2 previous games, I had an expectation of what it would be like. I didn't realise it would be so in depth and expansive. Multiple story arcs, multiple endings, you could miss entire plotlines or choose to ignore others, you could choose to be alone, or be with Triss, or Yen.

  • For me it has always been TF2.(personal opinion only) great community(good & bad) a lot of games are a lot more popular, but it still after all these years has a very loyal following. But,each to his own.

    • I loved TF2 but then it devolved into a microtranction ridden mess of particle effects everywhere. They had to reduce the graphics quality for it to cope and it still runs awful compared to the old versions. Used to be so smooth.

Have to commend the community in keeping it alive after Valve dropped it though, always nice to see a game get ongoing support.

    • To the Moon
    • Witcher 3
    • The Last of Us
    • Skyrim
    • Ori and the Blind Forest
    • Hollow Knight

Seeing as you didn't provide reasons, what is To The Moon? Only recently heard of it, but know nothing of it.

      • Hah, sorry! It's a 2D RPG about life, death and what could have been. Made me cry, which is very unusual for me

I don't really want to spoil it so it's hard to say more :(

  • Hearthstone because I played it for most of the decade.

Quit after the year that was 2019. 3 months clean.

  • Witcher 3 was my favourite. Very immersive.

For me it's Xenoblade Chronicles. The world, music and it's characters all did it for me and gave me a sense of wonder and the best thing was that it was a living breathing world. Even better is that it's getting a touch up for the Switch with some extra stuff so I'll be looking forward to reliving it.

2nd one for me is Horizon Dawn Zero.

    My top 3:

    1. Zelda BOTW
    2. God of War 4
    3. Horizon Zero Dawn

    Notable mentions:
For Honor (had a group of friends that all played, when we teamed up together it was epic!)
Destiny 2 (similar with a group of friends we certainly had a good time)
Warframe on PC (back in 2014/2015 before console releases, for me it was an epic introduction to space/ninja FPS style of game, its free to play & has an amazing PC community and dev team)
    Hollow Knight
Call of Duty Black Ops (first one)

  • No.1 GTA V

    • Zelda BOTW
    • Dota 2
    • Overwatch
    • Pro Evo 2017
    • Tekken 7
    • Cuphead
  • Not nearly enough love for Dark Souls in this thread. It's a game series truly like no other. It punishes death, rewards skill and perseverance, and uses the game's mechanics, overworld, and items as a catalyst for telling the story. Even the multiplayer concept was brilliant - being able to interrupt someone else's single-player progress against their will. It is, by all measures, a game for gamers.
