Vodafone Pocket WiFi *2* Pre-Paid BroadBand - $39.50 + Postage (Normally $79)

550

Dick Smith is offering 50% off for the new Vodafone Pocket Wifi 2. Pocket Wifi 2 supports 2100, 900 and 850 mhz - all 3 UMTS bands used in Australia. Wireless N support according to the specs. It looks like DSE stores start to have them in stock. You can also buy one from DSE online store, but you need to pay for postage.

The modem appears to be a Huawei E585u-82. It most certainly uses a newer version of firmware than E585 and later versions of E585 (V1) are harder to unlock for free so E585u-82 will be even harder.

Official unlock from Vodafone - $50. After 6 months, the fee may drop to $25. Online unlock may get additional discount. However, unlock Web site does not seem to have the IMEIs and unlock codes yet.

Existing Vodafone postpaid mobile customers might want to consider the $10 per month offer (pointed out by kirynflare and thanks dy4me for the link):
http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/plans/bundles/index.htm?…
For a postpaid pocket wifi, Vodafone generally unlock the device for free.

Pocket Wifi 2 uses the same battery as the Pocket Wifi 1. Even though the box says it supports wireless N, I am only able to get about 65Mbps connection (and it is 1T1R so it means it is 150Mbps at best in theory).

  • Excellent! No branding either, yay. Ordered one, thanks OP.

    • what do u mean no branding. It vodafone branded. not sure if its printed on the device but im sure its locked to vodafone

      • I think he meant there is no Vodafone written on the device itself… However, the actual Web interface is Vodafone customised (assuming it is the same as V1)… so it isn't really truly unbranded.

        • FYI: the web interface on V2 has no Vodafone branding that I can see, only clean Huawei branding. Very happy.

      • .

  • +1

been waiting for this one. does any one know if u can unlock these? also is the battery on this one the same as the last one?

  • +1

Specs tab on the DSE site confirms it is locked to Vodafone "Network: Network locked to VHA"

    • +1

question is can you unlock it

  • Anyone know does it come any data?

    • Most likely the standard 3GB for 1 month - since $79 can get you the pocket wifi 2 + 3GB from Vodafone.

    • It says 3GB/30days on the specs page.

  • +1

Good price but can it be unlocked like the old one?
    That is the question!

    • Called up Vodafone and they said its a $75 charge to unlock. Of course it can be cheaper if you unlock elsewhere, but whether its currently available or not, we won't know yet ><

    • If unlocked to use on 850mhz Next G, what speed would it be equivelent to… Turbo 7.2mbps or Elite 21mbps?

      • +2

        7.2

  • Got one - 850mhz sold me!

  • +1

For existing Vodafone customers, you can get this modem as well for $10 a month for 12 months, which includes 1.5GB data a month.

So for $120, you get this modem and 18GB, but it also depends if you like Vodafone.

    • Do you have the link handy for the deal?

$120 for this modem and 18GB for 1 year is a very good deal. What's the cheapest phone deal you can combine this with?

    • Hmmm…I'm thinking that is for the old model?

It's referred to as Pocket WiFi everywhere on that page, and in the pic, the "2" appears to be relating to the 2nd point in the terms and conditions?

      • Old model does not support 850mhz UMTS. If you are unsure, can wait for people to report back (once they received the pocket wifi).

        • Yeah I know…check the T & C's:

"For the Vodafone Mega Modem, broadband speeds are available in Vodafone's 3G Mobile Broadband (MBB) Standard Coverage area, in Vodafone's 3G 850 MBB Coverage area and in Vodafone's 3G MBB Regional Coverage area (with slower speeds in the 3G MBB Regional Coverage area than the other areas). For the Pocket WiFi 1 device, broadband speeds are available in Vodafone's 3G MBB Standard Coverage area & in Vodafone's 3G MBB Regional Coverage area (though the speeds in Vodafone's 3G MBB Regional Coverage area will be slower)."

        • You are referring to the deals for existing Vodafone customer (the other link).

Yes, I know.. it does look like the $10 per month Vodafone deal for bundled offer only gives you Pocket Wifi 1. However, I am willing to give Vodafone the benefit of doubt that you can ask them to give you a Pocket Wifi 2 instead (after all the mega modem is in the same price range and pocket wifi 2). The main intention is to point out Vodafone has a good/attractive alternative offer.

        • Yeah I know I am referring to the existing customer deal…that's why I replied to kirynflare's post ; )

He mentioned "you can get this modem as well for $10 a month for 12 months", but it is not the same modem as you posted.

        • Also bare in mind that voda will tear you a new one on excess charges if you try to use all your data. No warning, no option to have it cut off. So take off a few hundred meg per month just to be on the safe side.

        • It's the newer model as well. That's what an email I received a week ago said. I also asked in store, and called up. It's the Pocket Wifi 2.

(On that link, I think they just refer to it as pocket wifi to avoid confusion. Maybe. Not sure.)

  • does dick smith still do order online and pickup instore to avoid postage?

    • They should, but when I checked the store stock checker, it seems they don't have stock :S so its either available only online, or they are still waiting on stock to come :)

  • I got the v1 before. If this can be unlocked same way then it'll be awesome!

  • Is it really the Wifi 2?

Edit. It is! looks good now waiting for a free unlock like the first one

  • sold out everywhere?? i cant find any stores with stock (bris)

    • +1

It is an online only deal at the moment. None of the shops in VIC, NSW and QLD have them in stock.

      • thanks bud. i just bought it online after my little sook lol.

  • they also have a 2tb hdd for $79 for an hour long sale

    http://dicksmith.com.au//offer/1hourdeal?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id…

  • Which gives better download speeds - the WiFi modem or the usb dongle modem?

    • Depends on the pocket wifi / dongle modem. Telstra Elite series probably support HSPA+, which will likely be faster.

There is one advantage of Wifi modem, you can move it around to find a good position - something I found quite useful when you use Optus network (some spots get better signal).

  • whats dick smiths cutoff time for next day delivery?

    • Anyone who ordered today will not be able to get it tomorrow - unless you live in NSW - then you might have a small chance. It takes them 1 business day just to process the order. Then the item is passed to AAE - which will take at least 1 business day (NSW orders may go via Australia Post??).

The main reason I posted the deal now is for people to get their orders in before the 2TB hard drive deal this evening. I am not interested in the 2TB hard drive deal, but I think a lot of people would be. Therefore, DSE might have a large number of orders to process.

Honestly, you are looking at early next week if you placed the order today.

    • Just got an email that mine has been despatched with AAE - so might get it tomorrow.

      Ordered at 12pm this morning.

  • Not sure why… but the moderator is not allowing posting (or updating DSE deals) at the moment. I am hoping this is because too many people tried to post the 2TB deal.

  • Just got one! :) Hopefully we can find an unlocking source online.

  • when does this offer expire?

  • just wondering if it is possible to unlock [in near future, fingers crossed], is it going to be able to take a TPG pay as you go sim [optus network obviously] and work ok?

  • Hmmm… would this thing unlock it? http://www.zibri.org/2010/07/huawei-e585-unlock-download.htm…

He says it will do all E5* models.

    • Ah well stuff it, I ordered one anyway. Very keen to hear others on the unlock. Will email that guy in the above link…

    • NO, it does not work. Comes up with "Invalid Model"

  • i ordered by credit card.. and i received this ? is this normal and legit? or a fraud?

It's legit. I find it happens to Mastercard users. Visa users are hardly, if ever, asked to do this

    • I'd just cancel the order and buy by Paypal.

      • Yes it was a MASTERCARD.
i just canceled it and gone reorder by paypal.. see what happens. :)

  • I bought this 2 weeks ago.
Vodafone sucks, so don't expect it to be super fast…
It includes 3GB of data, but make sure you know it expires in 30 days.

BTW you can buy from Officeworks - Although they have reduced their price already so that they don't have to beat it by 5%!…

    • Do you have the Officeworks link for Pocket Wifi 2? I know Officeworks dropped the price for Pocket Wifi 1 to $39.50. Only managed to find Pocket Wifi 1 from the Officeworks search.

      • I think vicsta must have the version 1 ><

Version 2 should be much faster (or I was told anyways ==)

  • +3

Version 2 can't be unlocked by the method of version 1. I have been trying a few method already but none of them work. But if anyone found a way please let me know.

    • Ah cool, interesting.
So you had a go with Monkeycheese's method?
I found it got really hairy with one of the ones I did - the first one was basic and worked out exactly as expected. The other had the latest firmware as was difficult.IE the code was there but not associated with the "PST" prefix. I had to trawl through heaps of gibberish to find it, but it was there.
So what happened? Did you get any kind of read out?

      • Yea did M0nkeycheese's method aswell but didn't work. PST, LP T, 50000 something and dozen others with hours of scan but no success :(

        • i tried with numbers that looks like a code, but fail so far..6 attempts left..

  • I ordered one yesterday and was going to post when I got it, just in case it was a mistyped price… (same price as the pocket WiFi 1)…

  • got one from the shop in Cannington WA. only one left when I left the shop

  • For some reason i cant get this one detected with dc-unlocker.. anyone been able to detect in dc-unlocker?

I have hardware which lets me unlocks these no problems unlocking the V1.. done in 5seconds have done hundreds.. but this one i cant get dc-unlocker to find it.

can anyone who has one already see if dc-unlocker detects it with the auto detect option.

    • From searching on google.com, it appears that the current version of DC-Unlocker cannot detect the device. However, it is still possible to dump the log out (though the code does not appear to be in the log - the firmware has closed the loop hole it seems).

For people using the free unlock method (for V1), DC-Unlocker basically is a test program to ensure the driver has been installed correctly, and the PC/laptop can detect the device properly.

Hopefully, DC-Unlocker can figure out a way to unlock V2 soon.

  • Got one from the store tonight, no need to get it online and pay postage.
Need to return the $19 virgin one tomorrow.

    • which store was this? online it says all the stores are out of stock.

      • Westfield Parramatta.
Didn't ask how much stock they have, but the girl got one from the back.

  • Can this unit be unlocked free after a period of time?

    • I asked Vodafone for people hoping to add it to their account for $10 a month.

Apparently $75 for it to be unlocked within the first 6 months, and $25 afterwards.

Don't quote me on that though. You should check again just in case!

And usually there are methods to unlock it for free after a year or so anyways :)

  • Picked up one and there are two left at Highpoint(VIC)

  • Picked up one and there are two left at Highpoint(VIC)

  • Just got one about 5pm this evening at Altona Gate(VIC). 2 left in display. The price was still displayed as $79 down from $99 but the worker said they had'nt put the new special price up yet. Scanned through at $39.50. It's definitely faster than the V1 but not by miles. Good buy for me as my old ones battery was lucky to last an hr on its own continuously used when not plugged into power source!

  • Just got myself 2 in the mail today. Like what was posted here, the method to unlock it as with V1 is definitely not working. So i ended up paying $12 to unlock it from some random dude online who sent me the code on email. Double checked that the code was nowhere to be seen in the PSAS output file. How unfortunate! Buy hey, At half price, I didn't mind the $12 :)

    • Do you have the link to purchase the unlock code for $12? Have you tried the unlock code?

      • +1

Yup the codes worked! The guys email is [email protected].

        • so you sent him the output file and he sent you back the code from that?

if so, and if you are comfortable with it, would you mind PMing me the output file and the code, or even posting it here? if I/we can work out the string calculation maybe we can start unlocking for free.

this is of course assuming he extracted the unlock code from the output file only?

        • No the Psas output file doesn't work for this model. I sent him the IMEI number and he sent me he code.

        • I'll pm u the output file and the code he gve me,i did a search in the output for the code but it was nowhere to be found. But maybe you can do better :)

        • I went to the sim page where you can enter the code but mine is all grayed out, I don't think it's completely locked cause it still says 10 tries left, is there a key I need to enter to enable me to put a code in?

          Cheers!

        • +2

you might have to put a non-voda sim into it.

        • sent u pm regarding the psas and the unlock code, thanks a lot

        • NB, sent you the file. Cheers

        • Emailed that guy - now he is charging $15? Wha??

        • @bargainmaestro and nb85

Are you guys referring to me when you say you PM'd me? As I did not receive anything. Anyway that is fine as I doubt we would be able to extract the unlock code from PSAS Output if the gmail dude didn't use it. I have a strong feeling he either works in Vodafone IT or CS and hence has access to the codes - pocketing himself some $$ along the way :) I knew a guy in Optus IT that did this years ago..

        • bargainmaestro the code that [email protected] sent you, do you know if it will work for every device? he seems to be increasing his price all the time now.

        • I think the code is specific to each IMEI. I just got a 3rd set unlocked and the cost as someone mentioned is now $15. Oh wells, still a hell lot cheaper than the $75 Vodafone wants from me.

        • @bargainmaestro and imolared. I'm having the same problem with 3 sim not allowing unlock. Do you know if I have to use a non 3/voda broadband sim or would a regular phone sim work?

        • @n00b - All I did was swapped the Vodafone sim with my Telstra pre-paid sim, as soon as I connect it comes up with the Pocket Wifi screen, I logon as Admin and it automatically prompts me to key in the SIMLOCK Code.

When you replaced the sim does the device show "Invalid Sim"?

        • I haven't tried one yet as all we have in our house is voda and 3. Was curious whether I need to borrow a broadband sim which not many of my friends have or a regular phone sim. I'll try tomorrow with a phone sim.

  • bargainmaestro
    That was it! Thanks mate.

  • Thanks for this, going to hopefully pick one up tomorrow in Dick Smith.

  • We will soon see one of these on Vodafone.

  • Have mine unlocked now thanks to [email protected] and working great on Telstra Next G using the telstra.internet APN.

Speedtest is showing 7Mbit per second so I am happy with that! :)

    • Just dropped this guy a message also, planning on doing the same thing as you. :)

Yup the codes worked! The guys email is [email protected].

Is you. lol. I googled this email, and no where on the internet does this email come up, except the first time in this thread.

Are you trying to profit from a free technique here? :P
