Systemwide Adblocker on Android: What Do You Use?

I have been an apple user for over a decade
So unsure what people use.
Please recommend me some options.

    blokada

Systemwide requires root (and bootloader unocked) or an always on VPN solution
Best option is to use Magisk (for root) and AdAway for ad blocking

AdAway if rooted. Worked perfectly for me.
Also, if you are using a browser, use one that supports uBlock Origin extension (I think Firefox?). That way all ads get removed from the webpages.

    • AdAway if rooted. Worked perfectly for me.

    Adguard

    • +1 for adguard (not the one in the play store but the one direct through adguard with mote features).

      It has been fantastic!

      • Do you have to pay for that version ?

        • Yes, but it's worth it. Each licences comes in pairs with a PC licence (you can run it on Windows as well which also does system-wide blocking instead of only browser add ons). The support has been excellent and responsive every time I ask a question - even my last query was stupid as I should've read the update materials but they were polite. And there's a good special on lifetime licences every 2 months or so.

Over the years of using it, it blocks about 7-10GB of background data a month without impacting what I do. A few colleagues and family members have started using it too seeing how much is blocked - particularly all the background data packets.

    • This had me interested but looks like research needed……..one place mentioned blocks blah blah "and adult content" - now this is something I am not looking for per se BUT I dislike annonaNannies. However apparently there are 2 servers that you can set up, "standard" and "family" so this MAY keep the nannying out - detailed review here read the comments (tho they become political)

      • The DNS is an extra part of the software if people want to do extra blocks - I have mine turned off and use the normal blocking component fine without any adult content blocked 🙂

  • blokada is all you need

    Blokada - doesn't require root
but there have been occasions where my data seems to stop working (app crashes or site doens't load) until i turn it off temporarily. Still worth it 99% of the time. Does NOT blocked youtube ads however. For that you should get Youtube Vanced if you don't already pay for premium

  • DNS66 is one option

  • No need to install anything, just change your DNS https://adguard.com/en/adguard-dns/overview.html#instruction

  • I use Block-this but it doesn't always get everything. https://block-this.com/

  • I have started using PiHole at home. It works as a DNS blocker rather then an "in browser" blocker - which means it is capable of blocking all ad using software (even those "free" apps with ads at the bottom).
It is intended to be run on a Raspberry Pi (hence the name) but it will run in any linux enviroment - I got the premade debian VM distro and it is running in a virtual machine (Size was about 500mb all finished - uses about 23mhz of the CPU and a tiny amount of ram).
Once the machine was up and running i then changed the DNS on my router to the machines IP and just like that - ad blocking in place.
You can whitelist sites (like OzBargain for example).
I was also considering pfSense but it went a lot futher then i needed and ultimately - this works and was fairly painless.

  • Abp - ad block plus with Samsung's browser. It is effective 99% of the time.

  • I use Disconnect Pro for Samsung (it uses KNOX so there's no extra battery usage or anything like that), and is host list based. I whitelist firefox and install uBlock origin for firefox for web browsing.

  • Have you tried using the DuckDuckGo android web browser? It blocks most website ads.

There is a special function… Find you power button and press it…

On bog standard Android devices [ no root needed] I always install Opera browser which has a biult in VPN and ad blocking, plus the welcome ability to use an exit botton and set it to clear all cookies and history on exit.

I also do not set "use as default" for any browser [offered after adding other than Chrome] as the slight delay whilst selecting which browser prvents any automatic link in pages or texts from opening without active acceptance…

If you have a new enough OS you can just opt to use a Private DNS server in Settings.

Also, use the Brave browser as default.
