  • Has anyone compared the M50X to Beyerdynamic DT770 for studio recording headphones? Seems to be a lot of conflicting views online. The DT770 are also on sale here for $199 so tossing up between them

I love the dt770, but man is it different. If your want accuracy, the dt770 is better, but not perfect. The m50x has more bass. The other key aspects is comfort, the dt770 being now comfortable but significantly bigger. Unfortunately, when it comes to sounds, you need to try them both. I can't listen to the dt770 for more than a few hours, as the treble is accurate and can get very fatiguing. The m50x can press against your ears which can be uncomfortable.

      • Concur on accuracy

      • Never tried on the dt770s, but from what I've heard, they're the best out of the bunch. The earpads on the audiotechnica's are horrible, cant wear them for more than an hour before my ears get really sore. The m40x is overshadowed alot by the popularity of the m50x, many people would even consider the m40x to be better with more of a neutral sound.

    • The M50x is considered the Xtra-Bass version of the original M50 and my opinion is it is quite different from the original.
The M40x is closer to sounding neutral I think, but still an X model.

I could be completely wrong but I thought the x's were simply because they had exchangeable cables compared to the M50 and M50s (studio version with coiled cables)

        • I must have been reading too many Sony model names. After searching online it seems I was wrong (I swear I read online that the X-models were for “Xtra Bass” therefore I spelled it that way).

I just read AT’s official Mx-series write-up and there it seems clear it stands for detachable cable.
BUT while my memory may be wrong, it seems there is a slight bass-boost compared to the original M50 as seen in these FR measurements.

          • @thebadmachine: I think you might be correct as there was a silent update to the M50 from head-fi.org:

"It should be noted that the later versions are considerably ‘flatter’ and sound much better. The later versions are still a bit on the bassy side of things but not nearly as much as the earlier versions. Hard to pin a date on the changes (and what they actually are) but I suspect around the start of 2012. The looks haven’t changed so when buying second hand you might end-up with the older version."

The x denotes a detachable cable. They sound the same.

    • DT770 are great to wear, aside from sound - expecially with the velvet ear pads - (also come in leather)
I've not tried the M50X, but there's lots of comments about them being less comfortable.

I just went into the store assuming I’d grab the Beyerdynamic DT770 80 ohm. I was surprised how poorly they performed when testing on an iPhone. The 32 ohm was much better but quite expensive. I needed the headphones for use with an audio interface and phone/computer so the 80 ohm was not suitable. I tried the M50x and liked it better but found them a bit bassy. Then tried the M40x and was the most impressed with them. Similar to M50x without the extra bass. Very clear, even sound and cheapest of the bunch! I ended up buying them for $116 which is quite a good deal after comparing with the other headphones. Just thought I’d share for anyone in the same position. Thanks again OP!

  • Anyone wanting M50x should at least consider getting the M40x instead plus some upgraded earpads (HM5 earpads should do the trick)

Great deal on the M40x 5 though!
