Who Responsible for Breaking The Plant Pot (Housemate Dispute)

My housemate put a plant pot maybe around 20cm in size on the kitchen indoor window sill. Because it is hot today and I turn on the AC and tried to close the window, the window frame hit the pot cause it to fall from the windowsill and break.

She wants me to reimburse the pot. How is it my fault that all I did was close the window?

If you were born in 79 you're only a year or 2 off being a millennial as they're called now. They'd be the people you grew up with. I grew up with my sister who is a different generation to me. People are funny when it comes to generation bashing, it's like they're not aware that they don't share the same characteristics as everyone they grew up with.

Replace the pot with a plastic one from bunnings, less likely to break next time.

  • +4

Least your not asking for automotive advice. First thing you should do is apologise then replace the pot/plant.

Alternative blame them and look for another place to live, which one do you think is easier?

    • +2

which one do you think is easier?

Blaming them and looking for another place to live, obviously.

  • +5

Surely the ongoing change in climate has caused the weather to get progressively more extreme? Therefore leading to your decision to close the windows prior to indulging yourself in some cool breeze. In conclusion, I believe climate change is the responsible party here.

      Terri scheers?

  • +1

As others hsve said.. you are… but really, why place a pot on the window sill where it can easily be broken..

    • +9

There's a very obvious answer to that and I can help you figure it out yourself…

      1) What do plants need to synthesise energy?

      2) What do you get a lot of on window sills?

      • +2

While that is true, and i left myself open to that…

Its just a silly place for a breakable item.. also one that leaves a mess.

Though, it all comes down to being careful i guess..

        • +1

Is it? In light of the above information, I'd say that the window sill is a great place to keep plants. Probably why it's a completely normal thing to do!

Granted you would have a point if it actually prevented you using the window, but it sounds like they were just being careless (not a criticism, I think we are all careless sometimes - I certainly am!).

      • +4

What do you get a lot of on window sills?

        Dead flies.

      • +5

Growing up, I had been led to believe by comics and stories that dessert pies are left to cool on window sills. And that if you see it, it's yours for the taking.

The pies were a lie 😔

  • +8

Claim it on your home content insurance. Problem's solved.

It's both your faults. Hers for putting it there and yours for breaking it. I suggest you pay 50% of the cost. If she puts the new pot in the same place without protection measures and it breaks again it will automatically be 100% her fault, no matter who broke it.

    • +2

      protection measures

What protection measures do you suggest? Air bags? Condoms? Umbrellas? Parachutes?

    • I think this is the most reasonable answer. Many problems have two sides to them.

  • If this is a serious question. OP whether you intended to or not, you caused the damage by attempting to close the window and are ultimately responsible for replacing the pot plant.

  • +1

Is this the same as this situation?

A friend went to the beach with another friend (that I don't know) - he asked my friend to pass his boardshorts to him and when he picked them up, his phone dropped out, hit the ground, and the screen cracked. Unknown to my friend was that the phone was in the pocket of the boardshorts. No warning was given and the other friend expects my friend to pay.

Should my friend have to pay?

    • +9

No… And if the other friend thinks he should - even for a second - then they should not be friends.

    • +3

Not the same. The friend who was passing on the shorts, unless advised otherwise had no idea the phone was in there. So an accident. It's not like you are meant to check your friend's pockets for valuables before passing it on. Although I would in future. I would just say sorry it was an accident. If you had told me it was in there I would of taken more care.

If the owner had told the friend there was a phone in the shorts prior to passing it over and it fell out then maybe there is some responsibility to the other. As I would try and be more careful in passing it on. These things happen. In the OPs scenario he clearly knew the plant was there. He could have moved the plant before closing the window. It's not that hard. IMO

    • +1

Board shorts are for surfing. Why was there a phone in the pocket?
Phone should be kept in the walk shorts designed for casual activities and relaxation.
Friend you don't know should pay for his own phone

      • Board shorts are for everything

      • I can't tell if this is a joke or not!

      • What shorts do I wear if I can't walk?

    • Likely to have happened if the owner picked up the shorts too. Not negligence, unlike the window closing…

    • you are unlikely to be responsible for something you didn't know was there

  • +1

tell her the cat did it

    • +2

It was them aliens. Honest. Them darn aliens.

  • +4

How did you not see the plant pot though?

    • +3

Been there, done that. If the windowsill is fairly narrow and the window usually open, sometimes items will be placed all the way to the back. When the window is closed, it knocks those. It was my own house and own stuff though so there was no drama, except the internal conflict.

  • +7

Move the pot ya numpty. Don't break other people's shit then claim it was their fault.

  • prolly should just burn down the house

    • Such a terrible conundrum the op is facing. It's a hash life they have to endure.

  • +6

First I’ll summarise what others have stated. Plants need sunshine to survive so putting a small pot on a window sill is a typical place to put a pot plant to care for it. You won’t be able to claim on insurance. If you wanted to open or close the window and the plant is in the way then commonsense would suggest you first move the pot plant out of the way then proceed with adjusting the window before putting the plant back and cleaning up any mess made in the process. I think the best thing you can do is actually to replace the plant, apologise you your housemates then move out to a place on your own. You obviously do not have the necessary level of responsibility to live in a share house where your actions won’t cause problems for others. Either stay in a hotel where you can’t open the windows or move to a place where you learn how to be responsible by living by yourself. Buy yourself a pot plant or two and learn to care for something other than yourself.

    OzRookie / OzWeasel.

Since your initial reaction is to dodge personal responsibility, for future weaseling endeavours you should reopen the window frame and tell your housemate:

    a. You caught the neighbour’s cat trying to jump in through the window subsequently knocking over the pot.

    b. Walk away. Let the housemate discover broken pot and query if you know what happened? Claim ignorance and blame it on a gust of wind.

    c. Clean up broken pot and remove all evidence of it’s existence. When the housemate comes asking say, “What pot?”

    d. Clean up broken pot from inside, and place broken pieces and mess on the outside. Housemate will discover it fell out the window. When the housemate asks, say “We have a pot?”

    e. Pack your bags and leave for 2 or 3 days. Return to the house and if the housemate asks, shrug shoulders and say “Not sure? I haven’t even been home these past few days.”

    f. Place broken pot, soil, and plant back on the windowsill in its original position. When asked, say “The heat of the sun must’ve cracked the pot”. Proceed to explain the science between hot expansion and cold contraction.

    g. Unscrew one hinge of the window frame so it is dangling precariously where the pot would have been before you knocked it over. Say the window frame came undone and knocked over the pot.

    h. Confront the housemate about the broken pot before they discover it. That way you can launch into your tirade on the front foot at them claiming “Do you know why MY pot is broken?” before they’ve had a chance to formulate a defence.

You also never mention the existence of a plant or soil. Why did the housemate put an empty 20cm pot on the kitchen windowsill?

    • definitely this

    • OP definitely this. These are the only morally right answers

    • i. erase your search history of "how to dispose of a broken potplant" or "Explaining hot expansion/cold contraction for dummys" to remove possible complications for answers c, d, f

    • Sorry, but I think you missed part of c and d,

At the end of each I would add, "Wait, pot? You had pot and you didn't offer me any?" It adds an additional level of believability and distraction.

  • what about if the pot plant hit op and op fell and broke. would the housemate be liable for op's medical bills.

Kick the stupid in-considerate woman out. Fancy putting a 20cm pot on a windowsill in the first place.
Surely there must be alternative shade around.

    Kick the stupid woman out!

  • +3

I'd be reporting the placement of said pot to the Police. We can't allow people to go around irresponsibly putting pots on window sills like that. Your flatmate needs to be charged for such a dreadful crime. Imagine if s/he were to get out there amongst the community and commit this crime AGAIN?

It's your duty to do your bit and stop the scourge of careless pot placement in our community.

  • +2

go buy your own $20 pot plant and put it on the window so that when she breaks it you can call it even.

Cheap way to learn a lesson (which you seem very late to learn btw).

  • +1

OP I have to ask. Why didn't you just move it out of the way before opening the window?

After carefully considering your predicament, we have determined the best solution for this situation is: bikies.

  • Pay for it, then tell your housemate not to put stuff where it can fall over easily.

  • I blame tony abbott

  • replace the damn plant, my goodness

  • There's a saying that goes…

Choose your battles wisely. Is a $20 pot plant a battle worth fighting for?

    • But but but… its not about the money. Its about the priciple.

  • Today, we all found out that the scooter from Canberra is irresponsible.

    Your fault.

  • How is it my fault that all I did was close the window?

The answer is in your own post?

My housemate put a plant pot maybe around 20cm in size on the kitchen indoor window sill.

Because it is hot today and I turn on the AC and tried to close the window, the window frame hit the pot cause it to fall from the windowsill and break.

    • I turn on the AC and tried to close the window, the window frame hit the pot cause it to fall from the windowsill and break

      Or blame the window.

  • Easy problem to solve.

Place your own glass cup above her bedroom door.

When it inevitable falls and breaks as she tries to go in/out of her bedroom, give the same explanation she gave you as to why you gotta pay for it, then call it even.

    • -1

      Will not work.

If she is old enough to ask him to pay for the damages he caused, she is old enough to move the glass cup out of the way to avoid breaking it.

Unless you're one of the few who are almost as tall as the door. Even then, depending on which side you are coming in from you can't even see the top of the door

  • You could have moved it before closing the window but did not.
