Best credit card with rewards

I'm a newly single mum and want a credit card in my name for emergencies.

Currently I use my ex's, and am the secondary card holder but I need to separate finances asap. Everything goes through the card and I use the points for fuel vouchers and annual fee reduction (it's a commonwealth platinum card). It was paid in full every month based on just my salary so I can easily afford it and I have savings which I can use if needed (but I don't want to access them if I can avoid it).

I want to have that safety net for big unexpected expenses and direct debits to then pay off next pay (I'm a govt employee with a secure position).

The Coles card looks ok but I do tend to buy wish cards for 5% discount and Woolies since I'm closer to Woolies.

Any suggestions? I just want a 2k limit so I can put rego/insurance/car service etc on there.

I don't think I would use frequent flyer points as I have a lot of children and don't travel regularly, apart from visiting the closest city by car.

Have a look at Latitude infinity. 1 point per $ spent and can take rewards as gift cards 5000pts = $50 gift card so effectively 1% back. $69 annual fee

    • Just curious how would that credit card compare to the Altitude Black Rewards credit card - Westpac when using Altitude Rewards?

      • +1

They say 5000 points for a 50 gift card at a $1:1 redemption ratio.

For the Altitude Black its 11750 points for a 50 gift card at a $1.25:1 redemption ratio (so 9400 point if its 1:1),but they have multi tier points system so it depends on where you spend the $$ at.

I use amex essentials, no annual cost, if you pay off every month you care about interest rate, which I do so I don’t know the interest charge.

Rewards are Amex offers, which is pretty good. Points are nice, but unless your a big spender pointe generally don’t mean much.

I think Kogan Money black card, as a widely accepted VISA card, beats all no annual fee AmEx cards easily for being 1% cashback in Kogan credits.

The only perks that no annual fee AmExs have over this one are occasional statements credits back offers for purchases at certain merchants.

      • +1

Well I do agree Kogan money is a good card and more widely accepted.

The other problem with Amex is common surcharges, especially with bill paying. So it’s something that can out you off too the Amex.

With the Kogan reward credits, apart from Kogan stuff, what can you get? Doesn't seem like you can even buy Wish gift cards, or convert to frequent flyers. Very limited "rewards".

        • It seems you can use points towards Nike shoes(from $22, free shipping with Kogan First perk at the moment) or items from marketplace now. I buy the 30 days-40GB SIM for $4.9 often so I can easily redeem points in 490 lot fast. Or accumulate and use them towards other long expiry mobile plans.

            @Neoika:

It seems you can use points towards Nike shoes(from $22, free shipping with Kogan First perk at the moment) or items from marketplace now.

But if I want to buy the latest AF 1, I can't, because they don't sell it. Nor if I want to buy gift cards for Woolies, I can't.

Unless you're a big Kogan fan, the credit card and thus the reward points are useless as it traps you into the (often overpriced) Kogan store.

            • @Ughhh: You are right. One has be to cautious about their so called "Price Drop" when shop on Kogan.

Bodum Eileen Coffee Maker 0.35L for $9 delivered is my recent catch before it was posted here. It is selling much higher elsewhere.

          • @Neoika: is there a limit of 4 such offers? and you have to port in a number?

            • @Candour: Telcos shut down accounts with no recharge after 3 or 6 months so do not worry about it at all.

Nothing beats Kogan Money black VISA card if you are after a ZERO annual fee one.

    • +5

Pretty much every card beats Kogan!

      • Example?

        • +1

Example(s) was gone under Covid-19. Kogan Black still stays as the prime card in the Covid-19 climate.

The key thing you should be comparing is signup bonus.

Points cards alone do not justify their annual fee.

Right now the Coles signup bonus for $500 worth of Flybuys points is pretty decent for the fee.

It doesn't matter if you shop at Woolies, you will earn Flybuys on any spend with the card.

i have never got flybuys at woolies.

      • He meant using Coles credit card at Woolies to earn Flybuys points, not using Flybuys card at Woolies.

      • And BTW it wasn't me who negged you

Credit cards are only good if you never pay interest. Seriously. Set up an automatic direct debit to have the balance paid off monthly.

I use the Woolworths card. It's the most practical choice, I've found. I don't need fancy holidays or overpriced toasters. Purchases get converted to points, and we get bonus points for purchases at certain shops (e.g. Woolworths supermarkets). 2000 points gains us $10 off a Woolworths shop. I've found this to be surprisingly easy to achieve. The points-accrual-to-dollar 'exchange rate' is better than any other card I've seen. And they offer 10% off purchases for one weekend per month. Do your bigger shopping on those weekends and you'll save a lot of money.

    • There is no credit card I know that allows direct debit of the closing balance

It's either direct debit of the minimum repayment or a set amount

Could you let me know what cc allows 100% of the closing so that can be direct debited?

      • Commbank does this - You can manage automatic payments to direct debit the closing balance.

        • do they have rewards program?

what if closing balance day falls on weekend?

          • @Poor Ass: They do have a rewards program

Not sure about the due date falling on the weekend but from memory I believe its deducted on the next business day

      • I'm sorry but you must've misread something at some point and assumed it was the norm.

I've never seen any card/bank not offer full repayment. That just makes no sense. And I've been with all the major and a few of the minor issuers because I churn a lot for the sign up bonuses.

        • All the Latitude and Coles don't offer auto direct debit on full repayment. Just on set amount or the minimum repayment

I'm thinking is there tactic not to have this feature

        • What cards are you taking about?

I'll check out the direct debit form?

      • Wespac and ANZ allow you to schedule payment of the closing balance.

        • I do think banks can do it but not bon banks unless proven otherwise

            • @Yola: I'm saying gathering up my investigation looks like non banks don't have direct debit for the full closing balance

              • @Poor Ass: Thanks. I do not know about non banks but it is pretty poor form if so. Paying CC high interest rates is to be avoided at all costs.

  • go to a comparison site eg finders to see current offers as they change always

    • +1

Comparison sites haven't done much trick for me when it comes to energy costs (they've always been misleading and never got the cheapest on top - either it's not on list at all, which is mostly the case, or it's hidden somewhere). e.g. ReAmped energy that I'm with has been the cheapest so far in my experience and it doesn't even appear on the list on comparison sites as they may not have paid them (I suspect that's how it works).

  • Just wondering why you don’t get the same card that you had before with the same bank but just in your name. They know you and if you have been paying on time and I have a good customer with a good credit history they will look on your favourably.

You know that the current card suits you. Or, go to the same bank that you had before and asked them for their best deal, tell them you’re shopping around and what you want.

    • As the secondary card holder the OP has no standing with the bank, her ex was totally responsible for repayment in their eyes. In any event she should look for the card that is best for her current needs. Sounds like the either the Coles or Woolworths card would suit her. A few months after getting that card and checking her credit rating I would get the amex essentials, as suggested by cloudy, as with no annual cost you can make a lot of saving hrough the special offers. I have 2 Amex cards and 8 supplementary and save hundreds of dollars on these offers.

  • Will buying egift card (e.g. on Cashrewards for Wish GC) be counted towards $3000?

    • +1

I think so but since this is quite important and sometimes the rules vary I would chat to them. I find online chat the best and you can keep a copy if you need proof later.
