I think this is the cheapest it's ever been.

Very good value RAM that can easily overclock to 4000MHz+ with relatively decent timings.
For Ryzen 3000, it can typically do 3600 16-19-19 1.35-1.40v or 3800 16-20-20 1.45-1.50v.

  • Great Ram, mine does 3600 cl16 easy enough, ended up on 1.35v iirc.

    • could you please let us know if it better just to buy 3600 ram or get this and just over clock it ?
      i was thinking about getting G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32 GB 3600 cas 16

      • +1

If you want to just enable XMP then get the the Trident Z.

If you want to save a bit of money and overclock, get the Ballistix Sport.

The Ballistix Sport should do the same primary timings as the Trident Z (16-19-19) but if you do decide to manually OC, the Ballistix Sport can do 14-19-14 with 1.45v. The Trident Z can do tRFC slightly lower than the Ballistix Sport (260ns vs 300ns), but other than that they're more or less on par.

        • Can confirm, got mine to 3600 14-19-14. Pretty happy with the performance at this price.

      • +1

Don't expect to buy two of these kits and overclock them as easily if you want 32gb of ram.
32gb you need to look at one of the 32gb kits like you are already are.

    • Please share your exact OC settings, I have this and can't get any stable overclock.

I just used MSI memory try it function that's built into the motherboard, It went unstable during a previous bios revision but the new version is great again.

using MSI X570 gaming plus and Ryzen 3600

        • Thanks, I'll try these later although I only have a b450 mobo maybe that affects the stability.

  • What's a good value MB for this? Looking at building a decent budget pc for the kid.

    • What CPU are you getting?

I'd go with one of MSI's mobos.

      • -7

I wouldn't MSI (and Asus) are making garbage these days atm. I mean MSI is making motherboards with plastic M2 drive covers with thermal transfer tape to attach the plastic to the SSD drives. That will make the SSD drive heat up more than not using the cover.

Gigabyte is knocking it out of their park.

        • +7

tomahawk and mortar are still the best value/spec B450 board with proper VRMs + heatsink

          • @dcep: Mortar Max @ $149 was my choice a couple of weeks ago.

Better specs than the Mortar or Mortar Titanium IMHO at a similar price.

            • @4wd: Max series has the exact same spec, just bigger bios chip for nicer looking bios

Mortar is old stock of Mortar Max that it replaces

Mortar Titanium is just the silver color of Mortar, which also supports Ryzen 3000 straight out of the box (for new stock since August)

They're all the same board, except different color & bios chip size

        • +7

I'd go by board not by brand. These manufacturers tend to make good for a while, then get smug and go full retard again, it's like nobody cares about long term consistency.

          • -4

@nfr: That's cool but the brand MSI's boards have one person working on all the BIOS for every motherboard. So as a brand they're really offering a shit product ATM.

Brands go in and out IMO. Gigabyte used to be garbage but they're really improved. MSI and Asus have gone to shit coasting on their previous good reputation.

          • @nfr: totally agreed how they go full maximum retard again after a good run.

what stability and performance go for good vrms

          https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/9uc6bi/am4_b450x470_vr…

anyone know a more up to date list?

      • Haven't made up my on what CPU just yet. Looking for maybe a ryzen 5 3600, i guess it will depend on the rest of the components. No strict budget, just wanted to keep it way under $1,000. He's spending too much time in front of the screen as it is.

    • +1

depends on your budget really, here's my performance/$ build:

      ram ~110(this deal)
      b450 motherboard ~115(ebay)
      ryzen 2600 ~160(aliexpress)
      rx 470 ~105(aliexpress)

      total $490

choose your own case + psu(case can be skipped)

you should be able to overclock both ram + cpu this way and get the most out of the build

      • i think you can get techfast 3500x + rx580 build , and still performs heaps better without any overclocking even with 2400mhz ram

        • yeh if you're not overclocking just get the techfast deal they're good value, my build is specifically to allow for overclocking so you can get some extra performance, since this ram is so oveclockable

          • @abctoz: No, you misunderstand. The Techfast deal has a 3500X and an RX580, it will perform better no matter how much you overclock a 2600 and RX470.

            • @Zazer: the 3500x is a 6c/6t cpu, 2600 is 6c/12t - this is an important distinction, when developers start 'utilizing' more threads the 3500x will start to struggle, the main reason i'm not a big fan of the 3500x

imo these reviews are biased but they demonstrate my point: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/8169295/redir

you can also google ryzen memory scaling to see the effects of ram speeds with ryzen, they're not insignificant

  • Great ram. Unfortunately not compatible for me though haha

  • -6

    No RGB, no deal.

  • Good upgrade to the 2600mhz stuff they put in stock Techfast builds?

Could i overclock this to 3600 on the b450 Biostar board? Edit: running a 3500X

    • Not sure which brand you got, I'd say it's better ram based on their use of lower end brands, but what do you want to achieve with upgrading and OCing these? Lots of videos regarding RAM and speeds online so worth checking out to see if it's worth $100 investment :)…

    • Not sure on the quality of Biostar mobos but the CPU is more than capable of running 3600MHz with these sticks.

    • +1

you might want to try OC that generic 2600mhz stuffs 1st, which could surprise you

if it goes up to 3000 or 3200 CL16 , then no point spending on this for little gain

i know some naked 2400 value kit that does 3000 CL16 no problem

      • agreed :)

      • Thanks guys!

      • Damn I might OC my 2400 CL15 then

  • 16 x 2 kit for $230 or vengeance pro 3200?

  • Great value, even more so if you're interested in overclocking. I've had a lot of luck with Micron, while some Samsung and Hynix stuff just wouldn't budge for me at all.

    • So ram prices have really dropped huh? If you're not going to tweak the ram then the price is fine, but you can find cheaper.

  • +1

How does this compare to 3200kit like this for $99?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/G-Skill-Ripjaws-V-16GB-2X8GB-DDR…?

    • This model is known to overclock well, and as such you should be able to achieve a higher clock speed with better timing than those ripjaws.

    • -1

If you get CJR, then they'd overclock pretty similarly.

If you get AFR, the Ballistix kit is better.

      • What's cjr and afr?

    • GSkill have very strict binning process, and no matter what chip you get, their 3200c16 will do and only do what it is rated at.

I have seen whole batch of them are Samsung B-Die, but straight up worst sort, and even at 1.4v ~ 1.5v they don't do much more at all.

The most recent batch was Samsung C dies, I didn't have a chance to play with those, but I bet they clock well at all.

  • Does this compatible with Lenovo E450? Thinking to upgrade my laptop to 16GB

    • -2

      Does indeed!

    • AFAIK this ram fits into desktop PCs, not laptops.

    • Nope.

You want to be looking for SODIMM DDR3 sticks.

    • Thanks for the reply!

  • +1

Heads up, this set only able to OC if they using proper Micron Rev.E die(they generally are but there are exceptions).

Also, Rev.E will clock stupidly high with ease, but due to their sub timing can't go tight(really loose tRCD, and tRFC), the per-clock performance is a bit worse than Hynix CJR, and a lot worse than Samsung B die.

if you just wanted to see a really high number go for it, if you want best performance get a pair of B-Die works much better.

    • Given Crucial and Micron are the same company, pretty certain all of the Sport LT are Rev E. It's companies like Corsair etc that have to source their modules from 3rd parties that will use one product name (but different sku) for different source components.

      • 2 fact,
1, Crucial do priority Micron chip first, since crucial is child company of micron, but they don’t have to only use micron. There were history of crucial use Samsung chips.

2, Even if crucial used Micron chips, it doesn’t have to be the most loved Rev.E which clock really high, they can use other micron stuff, it’s not that hard to clock a chip that doesn’t suck to just 3000MTs.

The reason I made the comment is to advise those who think buying such RAM will Guarantee to OC, will risk getting RAM only does whatever they are rated at.

    • Which model has B-Die?

      • if you ask which crucial RAM have B-Die, I don't know.

If you ask which model will be B-Die, well, just search for those sticks that have obvious tight timings, like 3600 16-16-16-36, like 3200c14, like 4000+ C18, etc.

  • Could this be used as additional ram in Techfast's budget PC? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/508978

    • You can, but why do you need 32GB?

      • Thanks. I don't need it but I thought I could have it handy for the future if I slowly upgrade parts
