This is a very good price for local stock. I remember when I first bought it from Drop, blew me away. Then I sold it….
Why did you sell it?
Your name…. ok.
Commented in the original thread for this sale that they'd stepped up to Focal Clears.
This is the best value you can get for your money this side of the Chinese market.
Clears are expensive for someone who is.. NotAnAudiophile.
@lostn: Yup I realise that. I sold all my other headphones including the 6xx, Hifiman He4xx and Fostex TH-xx before going to the Clears. I still maintain the 6xx is the best value in the market, it’s made in Ireland . Only con is the relatively high powered amp needed , it’s 300ohms.
@NotAnAudiophile: how do you find the Clears? Worth the money?
@lostn: And then some. Bought them at 10% off the sale price, we have it lucky here as ours is the equivalent of USD$850 which is impossible to get in other countries. Its basically end game for me, I tried the Utopias worth about 4k and I felt the Clears were about 80-90% of the way there.
@NotAnAudiophile: What amp are you using for the Clears?
@lostn: I use a dap now, the iBasso Dx220.
@NotAnAudiophile: Only $1400.
Are you sure you're not an audiophile?
@lostn: Oh, I really wanted it for the tube amp. Yeah nah, audiophiles can use bombastic words to describe sound….the most I know is a warm sound which I prefer .
I bought it, gave it away and bought it again.
Give it to me this time.
Nice. Finally a post which is not Bose, Sony, or Apple iis!
If they could post to Australia from their official website, it could be lowered down to around $270 (185 USD) as it is on sale now.
Thx op, picked up the Sennheiser 58X instead for $238.
I think the 58x is a good buy too!
Bought off Drop, was disappointed. Not enough low bass or upper treble to sound truly realistic or immersive to me. Only amp/dac I used was Dragonfly black which had no problem powering them. I thought about buying JDS Atom but wasn't convinced from reading around that the characteristics would change. Got the 58xx which sound similar and I'm a little happier with; they have a little more low bass and top end. I would say both 6xx and 58xx are a smooth, comfortable listen but not a wow experience for me.
Only amp/dac I used was Dragonfly black which had no problem powering them.
You might have got enough volume, but the Dragonfly Black is woefully inadequate for powering these. It’s no wonder you were disappointed, you can’t run headphones like these from a $100 USB dac/amp and expect to get great results.
I would say both 6xx and 58xx are a smooth, comfortable listen but not a wow experience for me.
Yeah, because you’re severely under powering them. It’s not the headphones that are the issue.
So what DAC/AMP is suitable to drive these?
What’s your budget?
@aja12: The cheaper the better of course.
@Seraph2052: They are currently selling Massdrop O2 + SDAC DAC/Amp for 125 USD. IS that any good?!
I used to drive these from a Chord Mojo, it was perfect.
@NotAnAudiophile: Sounds too expensive for these at this price range.
@Seraph2052: the 6XX does require more power.
The online freq response graphs show the hd58x have more low end.
Not enough low bass or upper treble to sound truly realistic or immersive to me.
This has been a chronic problem with Senny's since Moses wore short pants. Then Sennheiser started to produce some token models in their range that drowned out everything with bass and people kind of forgot that the majority of their headphones (save for the >$400 dollar stuff) are still extremely tinny and underwhelming.
It's more so their circumaural/over-ears that suffer from this problem as I quite like their IEMs, but having gone through my fair share of Sennheisers throughout the years, I basically swore myself off entry-level/mid-range Sennheisers because of this.
Good price although I don't think I can drive them. Currently using a usb powered Scarlett Interface, recommended max ohms is 200.
Now I've heard people say they can drive these off phones and laptops, but they miss out on a lot of the quality.
Any idea how the Scarlett would fare?
My hd800's are fine either my benchmark dac or my scarlet 2i2. Don't let audiophiles scare you with nonsense. Enjoy the headphones.
My Scarlett 2i2 sounds flat with headphone playback. The Dragonfly black is much better in every way. I've played over 100 hours through the scarlett.
I have a gen 3 solo, been using it daily with my 598's which sound as good at home as they do via a fully fledged sound card at work. However they don't need much power to drive at all.
This is why everyone's subjective perceptions make buying audio gear hit and miss. I'm probably fussy and tend to notice little things whether aural or visual. But as an example, I've met guys who swear there's no difference between any type of guitar pick regardless of thickness or material. We should read as many reviews as possible and try to get a feeling for whether the reviewer is like us… can I also add that the scarlett doesn't sound rubbish, but the dragonfly sounds hifi in comparison.
Probably not the place to ask; but has anyone had experience with Sennheiser products?
I've got a pair of HD600's that I bought a handful of years ago. Worked very well, except recently one side of the headphones has completely stopped working. Does anyone know why this would be, and how costly it would be to fix?
Thanks!
Most likely driver failure. Email sennheiser themselves and see if they'll ask you to send it to them for repairs.
Much better price than when the sale started, good post!
