30% off Car Stereos, Speakers, Subs, Dash Cams, Amps - Kenwood DMX8019DABS $594.30 (RRP $899) @ Autobarn

220

Autobarn are having what they call a “flash sale” this weekend on mobile products, offering 30% of RRP.

They have a few carplay/android auto head units at really good prices, and I am sure there will be more stuff there, but I will focus on AC/AA in this post, mainly wireless AC.

Ozbargain favourite the Sony XAVAX1000 is there for $429 https://www.autobarn.com.au/me26970h
But I don’t think that is a great price for what it is when you consider the Sony XAVAX5000 is there for $454 https://www.autobarn.com.au/me26813

But the reason for my post is that autobarn has a wireless carplay unit with a capacitive screen for $594.30 in the mechless Kenwood DMX8019DABS. https://www.autobarn.com.au/6-95in-av-car-play-a-auto-dab-re…
This would probably be the cheapest I have seen wireless carplay for, especially from a retailer who will install it for you, which is what I would recommend after trying to install this very unit myself. And for close to the same price as the Sonys above, why would you settle for their resistive screen and always needing a cable requirement?
Mini review:
fantastic unit, the capacitive screen is crisp, clear and beautiful and bright enough glare is not an issue without being too bright. You just can’t go back to resistive screens once you have a capacitive unit.
Wireless carplay is amazingly convenient, absolute pleasure not to have to bother with cables every time I get in the car. Drains power on the iPhone sure, but not too badly and newer iPhones seem even less of an issue than my old battery stuffed iPhone 7.

If you want to pony up a bit more, the Kenwood DDX9019DABs https://www.autobarn.com.au/6-8in-av-wireless-car-play-a-aut… is there for $699.30 and has has all the features of the DMX8019DABS but also an even higher resolution HD capacitive screen and a DVD player. I think it started out at $1099 RRP.

These wireless carplay Kenwoods look a particularly good deal compared with the Pioneer AVH-Z9200DAB wireless carplay at $999 https://www.autobarn.com.au/7in-wireless-car-play-a-auto-dab… which only has a resistive screen.

  • My 2c.. the xavax5000 works well and has a nice capacitive touchscreen. I picked mine up for about $450 and have been very happy with it at that price. Installed it myself with no dramas but made it easier for myself by purchasing the matching wiring harness to minimise the work. Installed a generic eBay reverse camera into it and it works flawlessly, very quick on start up so that you're not waiting for the signal feed to show up. Regarding wireless, unless your phone has amazing battery I think plugging it in is actually a benefit as the charge it gives during my commute means that charging my phone elsewhere is no longer required

    • If I am doing a longer trip (eg Brisbane to Byron) or my iphone was low on charge I would definitely plug in. But a half hour trip probably uses about 5 to 8 % of the battery on my old iPhone with a battery capacity that is down to 79% of original. Not worth worrying about on commutes or runs to the dance school to pick up the Miss entropys.
      Embrace the Wireless!

Ps the Sony is a very nice, quality sound head unit. It would not be worth upgrading to wireless if you already have the Sony. But if you were going to install a new head unit, the wireless carplay is worth the little bit extra.

  • If only this wasn't overpriced by $400

    • AliExpress has these style of 10" screens that fit in the same way, some even flip into portrait to mimick Tesla displays

Still a great price comparing to what they started off at originally. I've got one in my car and it works great, I've also got a SNES mini connected to it incase I get bored at the lights lol.

    • Or if you're not fussed about DAB, this is a good alternative https://www.autobarn.com.au/9in-av-car-play-a-auto-rec-200w.

As a sales rep at a car audio shop, if you aren't fussed with some features. There's always alternatives to choose from.

      • What's the attraction of these 2? Are they single DIN and pop out?

  • So not wireless android auto?
    Just wireless apple carplay.

    • Wireless AA is not available in Australia. google hasn’t obtained the regulatory approval. I suspect it would be a software update on the head unit if it already had wireless AC, but as it hasn’t happened yet, I would not buy a head unit hoping it will happen for the unit you buy.

The 9019dabs is wireless AA compatible, I've gotten it working on my pixel 3.

        • Same here. Works a treat!

          • @jste9088: Cool! Is that a software trick, or has google enabled it? Are your pixels Australian models or overseas models?

            • @entropysbane: My pixel is from JB, definitely local stock! Requires a bit of fiddling as WAA isn't local yet, but it's doable.

              • @DianaOfAmazonia: It just started working one day. I think I might have had a software update to the phone.
its a Pixel 2xl from the telstra family and friend deal 2 years ago so definitely local stock.

  • Doesn’t seem to be applying to all stereos? The DMX8019S doesn’t seem to be discounted :(

For the 8019DABS this is a fantastic price and a great unit.

I'd avoid pioneer. I have had multiple lemon units. Top of the line ones too ($2k+ price tag)

  • Would kill for a Single Dinn with Apple play.

  • How much they charge you to do installation for one of these? Cheers

    • Considering this has DAB, it can be up to $200-$250.

      • Is that because an additional antenna is required?

        • Correct, as well as the GPS antenna and VSS connection which depending on your car can be a pain to install. Depending on the car (ie. non-Japanese) it can be up to $300 if you’ve never had an after market head unit installed.

  • I was charged $150-$200 for install for my Alfa for the DDX9019DABs at Auburn. a bit annoyed that it went $150 cheaper 2 weeks after I bought it…

However trying to get all the harnesses to work with my Alfa electronics seems to be a pr**** plus each harness is $200-$400 so be careful which car you own :)

  • Thanks for this OP, have been eyeing the DDX9019DABs for a while now. This is a great price and I just had to pick one up. Looking forward to getting it installed in the coming days in my Accord Euro.

Watch out for the installation costs. That particular unit over a normal install requires a digital antenna installation, GPS antenna installation and VSS (vehicle speed sensor) to all be installed. The Wireless Carplay won't work without the GPS and VSS cable being connected, making this a difficult install to do yourself and more time consuming professionally (hence extra $$). I'd expect anywhere between $180-$300.

      • Thanks for the heads up, I wasn’t aware of the additional cost associated with the install. I’ll have a chat with the guys at Autobarn tomorrow and see what they say.

        • +2

No worries at all! I’d also recommend getting an installation done at a proper Audio place. Autobarn doesn’t have the greatest reputation for installations or warranty on the work. Have a hunt around with Google reviews and call them up and ask for an approximate cost.

          • @JSONBourne: Great advice, I’ll do some research tonight and make some calls tomorrow. Really appreciate your help, thanks again.

            • +1

@rne88: No worries! I've been in the market for this unit this past month so I had these exact questions last week :) The beauty of Ozbargain.
