From the Amazon site
"In this newly updated and expanded edition of the bestselling The Phoenix Project, co-author Gene Kim includes a new afterword and a deeper delve into the Three Ways as described in The DevOps Handbook.

Bill, an IT manager at Parts Unlimited, has been tasked with taking on a project critical to the future of the business, code named Phoenix Project. But the project is massively over budget and behind schedule. The CEO demands Bill must fix the mess in ninety days or else Bill's entire department will be outsourced.

With the help of a prospective board member and his mysterious philosophy of The Three Ways, Bill starts to see that IT work has more in common with a manufacturing plant work than he ever imagined. With the clock ticking, Bill must organize work flow streamline interdepartmental communications, and effectively serve the other business functions at Parts Unlimited.

In a fast-paced and entertaining style, three luminaries of the DevOps movement deliver a story that anyone who works in IT will recognize. Readers will not only learn how to improve their own IT organizations, they'll never view IT the same way again."

For anyone working in IT, trying to make the transition to using Agile project delivery this is "light" way to get into the topic. It does present a bit of a utopia outcome, but it is a work of fiction.
On the other hand - if you work in a big old school or heavily regulated organisation (like me), it's likely to break your heart about what is possible, but what is going to be ultimately un-achievable! I expect this is how Amazon, Google, Apple, Spotify and all the pure tech-companies operate.

Agreed! Most non-tech organisations in Australia need massive restructure to achieve this. Most of them has been conditioned to have consumer mentality where to get stuff done you need to get external vendors to do it. They think of innovation is about using some company's product rather than invest in their staff to innovate from scratch.

      • Yep, and the corporate culture doesn't help either. So much time and effort spent apportioning blame, and likewise attempting to avoid any such blame.

Management at my previous workplace were huge fans of getting external vendors in to do anything even remotely high-stakes, as it effectively allowed them to outsource any potential blame if things went pear-shaped. And since nobody ever got criticised for going with the outsource option in the first place, it was always seen as the safest bet.

Saddest part was how this relegated the internal teams, with many smart and capable staff, to mostly housekeeping/maintenance duties. And cleaning up the mess left behind by vendors.
