Good work on first post. Add discounted price into the title.

  • +1

    Makes it $119.99

  • The email I got says it's therefore down to USD$89.99.

I guess if you're going to commit to Plex as the solution, then it's worth it.

  • whats the difference vs whats installed in lg tvs?

    • That's a client app. This is for the server side of it. Fwiw I've found the LG Plex app awful.

Regardless Plex is free, this paid version adds a few nice features to an otherwise good program.

      • +1

My family uses the LG Plex app for multiple hours a day and it definitely isn't awful?

        • +1

TV Plex apps are always kind of terrible.

          • @samfisher5986: The one on my LG B7 is great, just as good or even better than the one on my Android TV and Xbox 1.

        • +2

I use the Android TV version on both a Shield and inbuilt on the Sony TV, it's much nicer.

So much so I connected a Shield on my LG TV for that very reason.

YMMV, but there's an unofficial Plex app on LG that probably exists for that very reason. I had all sorts of issues with the standard app.

      • +3

Purchase the 'XPlay' app for a couple of bucks for LG TVs - unofficial plex client that is wayyyyy nicer to use than the official client.

        • Yeah that's the one I tried instead

    • +2

Plex pass you get additional options on the server like logins for each user (like netflix) and restrict certain content (ayee). Literally the only reason I bought mine ages ago for $99 was adding users / restricting and so my wife doesnt messup my dashboard on recommended movies haha.

Additional features also like streaming content, news and whatever - but I dont use them

      https://support.plex.tv/articles/202526943-plex-free-vs-paid…

      • You can add users for free, you just need to create a plex account on the website for each user through their own email addresses. After that you login to your server and grant them permission to login and you can set which categories each user can view.

        • So you can restrict content too? Because whats the point of the pass then..

          • +1

@BanannaMan: Yes you can choose what they can watch and can not watch all on the site.

          • @BanannaMan: Yes you can restrict whatever you want on there, the pass just allows hardware encoding on your server mainly.

  • When I looked into it a year or two ago, I think the only reason worth doing it then was if you had a HD Homerun or similar network tuner / PVR that would let you stream it to Plex.

They may have other / newer features now.

    • Early access to new Features as well, took 6 months for PLEX PS4 app to not require a Premium

    • +1

Live TV + PVR is still is the major reason for Plex pass, however keep in mind you (probably) have to get another subscription for EPG data. When I tried it the previous time they had a deal on ($99 lifetime) I found the Live TV/PVR implementation lacking - high CPU load, slow channel changes etc. Luckily they refunded no questions asked.

      • +2

There’s a free XML EPG service to use for Aus https://www.xmltv.net/

I’ve been running this for a couple months without issues. Channel changes are a bit slow, about 3 sec, however for my use case that’s not an issue as we don’t channel surf and watch FTA now and then.

        • Hey that’s nice. I’ve been meaning to get webgrab plus setup.. but haven’t yet. Thanks GraceNote for being an expensive bunch of buttholes so plex stopped providing earlier this year
          http://webgrabplus.com/

      • I had this problem too, and gave up. I still have the Plex Pass, and I still have my HDHomeRun - but I use the HDHomeRun app to stream live TV around the house (just doesn't have DVR functionality).

This is using Xbox One by the the way. Changing TV channels using Plex takes ~10 seconds, the HDHomeRun app takes ~2 seconds to change channel. Plex transcodes Live TV to the Xbox One, it can't direct play it for some silly reason, which is why it's so slow and basically unusable :(

    • I paid for PlexPass for this reason plus streaming movies from my NAS. The free XML EPG service works well most of the time but from time to time, I get the "missing guide data" error. But the main issue I have is pixelated playback and recording, which comes and goes - I dont think it is to do with the Plex Server though as the HD Homrun app also the issue when it happens. I really like the set-up but just a pain to troubleshoot this. The bottom-line is it is not a stable set-up, that I can readily recommend to friends for Live TV + PVR, too many variables for things to fail.

  • Don’t forget plex pass gives you access to open subs automatically through the client, I believe you need a subscription otherwise for API access.
Also I think plex pass gives web hooks? It’s changed somewhat over the years.

    • I thought this was included in free? I have configured the server to opensubs and can select subs for all movies. Is this something else?

    • This is a useless feature in my opinion as its only for the specific person who is using it, the feature won't provide subs for your plex server.

You are much better off using Bazaar.

      • Bazaar requires a subscription to open Subs
From what I’ve found it just works.
I’m using the Apple TV client and I go
        Playback-> subs -> find

        • Bazaar supports a wide range of subtitle services.

If you think finding subs for every single client every time you want to watch a movie "just works"…

  • +1

Looks like 131.30AUD or there abouts and expires on the 20th at 11:59PM PST which is 5:59pm AEST on the 21st of December.

    Popcorn time

  • I think I got my money's worth from my lifetime subscription. Tried to use emby and jellyfin but I came back

    • +1

I actually really like Emby, it's definitely a solid alternative to Plex.

      • Its fork, Jellyfin is what Emby is meant to be, might be worth giving it a shot!

        • Will give it a look.

  • Is there a way I can use my itunes credit to buy this? I tried it through the app it still asks me for card details

  • Is the main reason for buying a PLEX sub still the hardware encoding it offers? I assume the free version still doesn't do this.

    • +1

Yep, hardware transcoding is only available with a pass. For my use case howver, I don't think purchasing a pass solely for the hardware transcoding is worth it. My main use for Plex is in watching recent TV shows that top out at 720p, or animation at 1080p.

Hardware transcoding actually looks worse than software when it comes to animation. Of course, this may be due to the hardware I am running Plex on: QNAP TS-670 Pro w/Xeon E3-1265L v2 CPU (no additional GPU).

      • Among other issues, one of the issues is the zerocopy bug which causes huge quality issues with intel CPU's.

    • Hardware transcoding sucks. Don't bother. CPU's with good passmark scores are plentiful and cheap.

Most buy the Plex pass to set up individual user accounts but a limited version of this has recently been added to the free version.

Others buy a pass for the FTA features. I don't know anybody who regularly watches FTA. I certainly don't.

There is very little reason to buy a pass.

    • Hardware transcoding isn't worth it in my opinion.

There is a huge Intel CPU bug if you use it on your server, and various clients have various compatibility issues with certain codecs when HW transcoded.

I had to disable it as I simply couldn't tell people, buy a new media player because for example the plex for PS4 app isn't very good.

      • I use it 95% of the time for an iPad which means it has to transcode everything. The server is running an old i7 3770 so it handles software transcoding fine. Have wondered if hardware transcoding would be better but the replies here make me think not.

        • If its just one device you can easily give it a try and turn it off if you get problems.

        • +2

A 3770 is still a beast of a processor and would easily handle 4-5 transcodes simultaneously. I wouldn't bother with hardware transcoding in your situation.

      • I basically needed HW transcoding for my setup as I'm sharing with ~10 people (a mix of PS4/XB1, phones, TVs) and my older X5670 can't keep up with transcoding that many HD streams, as well as running a VM and all of the other crap I host.

That said, I did try Intel's Quick Sync on another server and compared to my server with NVEnc. Quick Sync was absolutely rubbish in terms of quality.

It's odd that you're getting issues with HW transcoding when using the PS4 and other clients, the three people I transcode to on a PS4 don't have any problems.

What HW encoder did you try at the time?

        • HW Encoder? Whatever Plex uses.

Its probably an Intel only issue with PS4 etc, only on certain codecs, I've seen other people mention the same issue in the forums.

          • @samfisher5986: HW encoder, as in, Intel Quick Sync or nVidia NVEnc - Plex can use either depending on the server and the physical hardware.

It is an Intel issue however, I had issues myself when trying Intel.

What I'm getting at is, HW is worth it depending on the use case.

  • what's the cheapest tuner for Live TV?

    • Consider whether you need a tuner.

7, 9, 10, SBS, ABC all have streaming available. Depends what you watch I guess?

  • +2

I purchased my Plex Pass around 6 months ago and am very happy with it, I can watch my shows anywhere on my phone or another computer, and even sync them on to the device. Even better for air travel!

Being able to stream it to my phone in another country then cast it on to the TV in the hotel, very handy!

    • +3

Only saving to/syncing with your device is a PlexPass feature (for anyone else reading this comment). You can pay a 1-off fee ($5, I think) to stream to a device (chromecast, PC client are free) from anywhere.

Current Plex monthly subscriber here. Didn't work for me.

    • +1

      What part didn't work?

    • +2

Current Plex monthly subscriber here. Didn't work for me.

Why give a negative vote because you can't get it working?

You could provide some information so others could help you but instead you whine and give a negative vote.

      • +8

Context is Plex don't really seem to give a stuff about its existing client base. Monthly subscribers have done far more to support Plex than I will ever do with my lifetime pass. In the last 3 years I can't think of any development that has come from end user requests. Plex developers continue to build commercial features which are not wanted or requested by paying users.

Is it worth a neg? I'm not sure on the rules on that but it does highlight existing and support users once again being deliberately excluded. Rightfully then are annoyed. Plex should be better than this

        • +3

+1 ^^^ I second this, so many reported issues fall on deaf ears and then a few months later they come out with some useless rubbish that no one wants like Tidal and terrible streaming services.
I'm still waiting on fixes from outstanding issues from over 1 year ago. I cancelled after a few months when i realised that my money wasn't going into resolving issues.

          • +1

@Tamagotchi Breeder: Can't say i've been a fan of the last couple UI changes either, i've already got the lifetime sub but i've been using Emby which i find i actually like a lot more, people should give emby a try as an alternative.

        • In the last 3 years I can't think of any development that has come from end user requests

Uh, individual user profiles for free users?

There's a single major one from a month ago.

          • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: I'm a paying plex user. I already had this feature for 5+ years. This deal is for Plex Plus right?! I

You are using this thread to neg the paid features on offer and telling others to look a just Plex free. However you seem to be taking my experiences with Plex which have been mainly positive, very personally.

You are actively seeking out my comments to counter them but then suggesting paying for it may not be great value for many

            • @4agte: Ok, you wish to disregard the single most requested feature by users, which was subsequently implemented. Cool.

              • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: I'm not ignoring it at all but fail to see your point. This user feature was introduced 5+ years ago for Plex Plus subscribers. It was the primary reason I paid for Plex Plus. How is moving paid features to being free without any new development beneficial? It is not a new feature, It is an old feature now available for free users. How is this developing the product? I'm not saying paid features should not eventually become free features but if you are paying a premium for Plex Plus you want the paid side of Plex to continue developing. Otherwise what are Plus subscribers actually getting for their money

    • It applies for GIFTS. and you can GIFT it to yourself. tried and done successfully this morning…

      • Thanks Alex. This is exactly what I just did.

    • To be clear, this deal is for new customers only. Existing customers can get around it by buying themselves a gift card, which is also on special for the same price. I'll remove my neg, but I'd suggest updating the description.

  • +1

Infuse is better if you have more recent iOS devices and just want to stream around the house. With infuse the client app does all the processing, the sever pc just does file sharing.

    • Doesn't appear to be in my LG TV's app store, on my PS4 or on my Android TV box Play Store. Can get Plex on all of those.

      • As far as I know there is nothing like Infuse for any of those platforms. It’s one of those cases where there’s no non Apple equivalent.

  • Longtime plex pass lifetime user here. Love it.

  • +14

Long time subscriber and while I may have gotten my money out of my lifetime subscription I'm likely going to migrate towards Jellyfin in 2020.

Developers are currently more interested in generating revenue through commercial streams than building the features that it's paying support base wants. It started with Tidal. Why is Plex limited to 1 music streaming app? Then the recent addition B grade ad supported streaming movies and TV shows.

Unless you need managed users, movie trailers or recording TV I don't see any huge benefit to Plex Plus. Plex free covers 95% of people's needs

      • +10

I'm actually providing useful information to those considering purchasing Plex. If I needed to know anything about useless announcements I'll just come back to your post.

          • +1

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Never said I was leaving. I also have discussed many points and even suggested people try Plex for free. Boy, I even stated I have gotten value out of the product. I'm just concerned with the path development has taken.

At the end of the day I'll let the Ozb community decide if I was providing useless information or not. Did you want to check the votes or come back later?

Are you intending on providing some useful information or did you wish to continue to complain that others are being whingers? I am having trouble seeing how you don't fit inside that category yourself. Thank goodness you are here to call people out.

            • -4

@4agte: Well, had you read my other posts I've discussed the merits of hardware transcoding (none), the new individual user profiles (awesome for free users), amongst other things.

You know, things relevant to the topic.

What I didn't do is jump on to whinge about a FREE and OPTIONAL feature that allows Plex to continue providing an awesome service for free users. Nor did I jump on the Jellyfish bandwagon when there is little evidence that it'll be a "game changer" yet. If it happens it happens. Why spruik something that will need another 6-12 months development before it's relevant for most users?

I'm sad you base your "concerns" of Plex's development path on a single free optional feature that doesn't affect you in anyway. But you're entitled to your opinion. Even if it is ridiculous.

              • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Yes. Only yes because saying anything else triggers you. I'm sorry

                • -2

@4agte: Ah yes, resorting with the "triggered" response. Not triggered at all. Offering my opinion and asking you to back up your opinion is the entirely opposite of triggered. Maybe you should consider why your followups are lacking any substance? So far you are just repeating ad nauseam that Plex "don't care" about development when all signs point to the opposite.

      • +1

Upvoted because you made me snort.

    • +1

Am looking at getting a NAS shortly. Was gonna go with Plex. Do you think Jellyfin is a better option? Never heard of them before so will take a look.

      • +3

I like jellyfin. It's free and open source too

      • Still early days. Plex is certainly a more polished product. Jellyfin has a very similar feature set but it is still very early days. JF will eventually be better. ie. Client driven not commercial monetisation driven changes

Right now I'm using both but only using JF for a part of my existing library

      • Give emby a look.

        • Emby is not much better and will probably go down the same track as plex eventually.

        • If you mainly use Android or Apple devices then Emby is far worse than Plex.

  • Good work mate. Thanks.

  • -3

but what can i do with it?

    • +1

Maybe instead of asking, read the comments here or just Google it?

      • i did both and became hopelessly confused

        • Primarily adding users with managed libraries is one of the more useful day to day features…. it also adds things like trailers/extras which is a nice touch. Some other stuff that I don't care for. But always changes…

          • @scuderiarmani: thank you for trying but i do not understand

          • @scuderiarmani: You can add users for free, you just need them to create their own plex account on the website and then on your server you can grant them their own user via their email addresses with full control over each users permissions.

        • Continue paying for Netflix.

          • -2

@runean: it gives you free netflix?

            • +2

@bargain huntress: No, but with a good setup you would not need Netflix.

I meant more, if after Googling you became hopelessly confused, I would abandon and just keep using Netflix. It's the sort of thing that people generally won't hold your hand through, and you need to be willing to do your own research and testing.

              • @runean: ok
so its like torrenting or something?

                • +2

                  @bargain huntress: Or something.

                • +1

@bargain huntress: It is a media server, you just put all your movies/tv shows into it and it will download metadata for them and present it similar to how netflix/stan/etc. would display it along with tracking what you have watched/haven't watched. A simple look at http://plex.tv should tell you this and more though.

  • +1

I've never seen the appeal to use Plex, I don't find myself away from home thinking I want to watch X when I happen to have on my pc back at home lol. But at least they offer a lifetime option, unlike alot of things. It ends up trumping the point in having locally stored media especially movies. You view them through a limited media player in lower quality too
