Optus Contract Cancellation

I'm currently in an contract with Optus. I pay $99 per month on a leasing plan over 24mths. iPhone X and 20gb data and unlmtd call and text.

However I can't keep the phone at the end of my contract which is in June 2020. I am looking to cancel the contract and terminate the service because I feel this is a ripoff over 2 yrs and I can't even keep the phone. So I found a way of doing this without getting charged $354 for early fees etc.

Another option is the $99 upgrade option which I'm considering which means $99 contract fee and then I change to the $39 month to month no lock in contract. This changes the $354 to $138. I also don't want to keep the phone as I'm thinking of moving to JB Telstra plan and using the $500 gc on a phone.

Any other options I could consider?
Everyone's thoughts on this?

Did you not know you couldnt keep the phone when you signed the contract ? Looks like a pretty big oversight if you think its a ripoff now, and not back then.

  • You can keep the phone but you end up having to pay Fair Market Value for the Phone. Which may not be worth it to you. All you have to do is not return the phone and they email you a reminder to return it but if you don't return it after 5 days or something they end up sending you a huge bill.
Same thing happened to me when i didn't return my iPhone 8.

Why agree to a contract that is a rip off in the first place?

So you can have the latest new device to impress your friends?

He probably knew the T&C's, but just want to weasel his way out to get the deal with JB Telstra and a new phone.

    Thank the lord dear ozbargainers.

It's people that hide in the shadows like our beloved OP who sign up to these $99 "leasing" contracts; that give big companies like Optus the wherewithal to give ozbargainers the actual bargains.

  • I’ve posted this before, but I’m not surprised about all of these posts re: leasing plans. My company never offered a true leasing option, and every time we ever lost a sale to a lease plan, it was people wanting “the cheapest” without properly assessing it.

They were an absolutely terrible idea for everyone except the Telco.

  • You 'lease' a phone? How the f*** does that even work?

Please don't lease things like phones. Unless you have a company with more than 2 employees.
