Gumtree Purchase - Paid by PayPal but Now I Have Changed My Mind

Recently I wanted an item on Gumtree. We agreed on a price of around $50. I sent him the money via PayPal. He needed to ship the item over. This happened on Sunday (no post). The next day due to some unfortunate circumstances I had to cancel the product as I couldn't get it home etc etc. I asked for a refund and then he finally said yes. I told him and he said no worries I'll get it done tonight (the refund).

Next day and no refund and I've sent him a few messages about the issue and how I contacted PayPal and opened a case. (Also let PayPal know and opened a case about it) He has seen the messages and no reply. Everyone's thoughts?

    Exactly, ask for a refund minus the PayPal fees he's had to pay. There's no reason why he should be out of pocket because you've changed your mind. Also apologise for any inconvenience.
