Is this one of those WD portable drives where if the connector port gets slightly bent it's GG no re?

    • +5

      …..bent it's GG no re?

      ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

      • +1

I think he means it's not regular SATA HDD inside, so once the USB port damaged, it's not easy to recover your data.

      • +2

Should the connectoroo be buggered up, would it be correct to assume that all is lost, old chap?

        For reference: https://community.wd.com/t/broken-usb-connector/19039
My last WD portable drive was purchased this long ago…

        • Do the Elements drives also come with encrypting boards now too?

          • @syousef: What's this?

            • +1

@idonotknowwhy: Some drives come with encryption set on the circuit board. If you attach the spinning part to a new circuit board, it will not work because the encryption keys are different. That means if the board breaks you won't be able to recover data.

        Good Game, no rematch.

    • Yes. I bought the 1TB variant and didn't know this, opened it up to chuck in a PS4, then was like wtf?!

    is showing $89 USD now

    • Yep showing $89 USD for me as well

    • +2

$89 is before taking into account GST and other costs.

  • Can these be shucked for NAS?

    • +1

      No, soldered on.

I was tempted to buy some for a slow USB3 NAS, then I saw it's Amazon US a.k.a Shipped by fastway a.k.a lost package or DOA.

NOT TEMPTED… given that a 3TB one here .. just used… is not recognised and can't be formatted… 'invalid parameter' = not happy about that drive.

    added ..

How does $U89 get to $A210 !! Amazon AU is stuffing that price up

  • If I buy 2 of these how can I have them synced up so there's always a back up of 1? I've lost so many valuable photos and archived files for my small business due to these dying one day.

    • Get a Google one account

      • But I don't want to upload gigs and gigs of stuff

    • A program called Synchredible may help you. Free for non commercial use.

    • Raid 1 I guess. But IDK if it's possible for external hard drives.

      • It's possible, but won't protect from cryptolocker, random accidental purge/deletion, theft of devices.

        RAID is not a backup.

    • You could. But get a different brand. 2 of the same batch are likely to fail at the same time.
