What Are You Doing for 10 Days over Christmas?

Hey friends

I'm basically a single older guy who has to have a forced Christmas break (the usual around 10 days or so). I'm in Sydney btw and dont have any family to celebrate Christmas with.

I would have liked to work but now I have to find stuff to do over this time. The thing is that the usual weekends are enough for me to relax.

It would be great if I can utilise this time better.

What are you guys doing over the break? Any suggestions or ideas would be fantastic.

Thank you.

    Hello there

I share the same pain, I hate not working, sad life hey…. get yourself over to Thailand or something

Go camping in tassie, go fishing, build something, get wasted, watch the cricket, learn programming, buy a guitar, go and drive to the center of Australia, volunteer at st vinnies, learn to surf, cook…

Unfortunately I’m a pro at all those things so I’ll just ozbargain

I shouldve mentioned that travelling overseas (or even any air travel domestically) is probably too expensive to justify. But thanks for the other options!

What do you mean to expensive to justify, you are older single bloke who works non stop and lives in suckhole Sydney lol. What are you waiting for? You can't take it with you.

        • not everyone has spare money

        • My topic was regarding Christmas holidays, and I meant its hard to justify travel during this time considering the expense.

      • You would be surprised how cheap it is to travel on a budget.
I live in Thailand. I'm spending my 1 night in the city during new years, including hotel I'll spend under $50 for a good night out.

Do that thing you have been putting off for years because you never had the time.
    Clean the house.
    Listen to some music/audio books/podcasts.
Watch some movies or tv series.
Go to the park, or have a picnic/bbq, make a day of it, go to the beach.

    • I've cleaned the house so hard I've worn out my good shovel.

You might not have family, but hopefully you have friends to catch up with? That's what I plan to do - catch up with friends and former work colleagues

    • Yeah agreed. However its not as simple when those said friends have their families they choose to spend all the time with. Its all good though.

What about volunteering to help the less fortunate, those who have to worry about their next meal and not having a roof over their head?
Apart from doing something very rewarding it would also put this very first world, luxury problem into perspective.

    • Mate, in Sydney people are far too concerned with where they're gonna get their next $50 lunch from and where they're gonna take their turbocharged cars for shopping and their kid's sports games.

      • I know you are exaggerating but if it was true, would that not be very sad and pathetic.

        • The (Mod: removed racial slur) and asians in my area all drive German turbocharged Cars. I had to get double glazed windows because of the noise of their engines. Electric can't come soon enough. There's this one old asian guy who drives a Porsche Panamera Turbo hybrid turismo sport etc.etc. and he is kind enough to always leave the street in e-hybrid mode.

    Fishing and spearfishing.

If the weather goes to shit, drinking like a fish.

  • Watch many movies and eat out for lunch.
Not my plan but you could be lucky enough that it’s yours.

  • My plan is to do as little as possible.

My reality will be wrangling my children into something that aspires to be above base barbarianism.

I've had the same problem for years
On the actual Xmas my days I buy food and drink for me and bones for my dog and pick a dvd series and take the day off.
On the other days sleep in a write a list, pick what you feel like doing.

Scoopon etc can have interesting ideas f o r activities, add in stuff around t h e house, projects, free online courses, good book, etc

Biggest tip… do not watch live tv, avoid all places with Xmas decorations and carols. Everyone including ads and news push the idea that everyone's having a great friendly get together which is not the truth. However in gets in your head so just stay away from it.

    • If you have a dog, you don't have a problem. Go out and play with him/her - give the dog the best Christmas ever and spend all day with it and go to dog parks, let it run, play with it etc.

    • Interesting. Thanks and good ideas.

    Working

hey coffeeinstance, I have also got time off work this Christmas and will not be travelling or shopping etc, we do celebrate and share Christmas together though with others at our church with carols, food and the good news of Jesus coming to earth. Will be seeing mum and dad too with the wife.

Other than that, I also enjoy leisure walks in nature, either coastal or bush, and playing some sport-there are many "meet-up" groups for different interests that you can rsvp online and friendly communities around. I have joined badminton ones and enjoy playing pool too at pubs/rsl clubs - some are free on certain days of the week.

I love eating, so baking might be an option and you get to reaps the tasty rewards too. We are making some choc chip cookies for our work colleagues and neighbours. Might be an easy way into saying "hi" and finding out what people are doing for Christmas as well.

At the end of the day, it can be as simple as you want. Good luck! Btw, it's open invite to church and also dinner this sunday arvo/evening, so hit me up if interested! Western Sydney location near train station :)

    • Very generous!

    • Thanks for the invite and you have some good ideas too. Appreciate it.

  • Why not have an OzBargain BBQ and we (those with nothing to do) can join you.

  • 6 kids , an ewok, a lagomorph, a treehouse and a tent. Should be an epic 2 weeks! can't wait😊
