Possible to add additional RAM or graphics?

    • Unfortunately not at this point.

    • +2

If you mean DIY yeah, only low profile cards though

      • +7

If you mean DIY yeah, only low profile cards though

Ooops might've misinterpreted the question. Yes you can DIY RAM/graphics

Many low profile GPUs will work such as the Nvidia GT1030 (good for 4k content via HDMI). You can use low profile double slot GPUs with some caveats (the 1050TI low profile cards fit and work just with not much airflow and in the 4x slot).

The systems have 4x DDR3 slots with a total of 32GB of RAM supported so there's a fair bit of upgradability available there.

  • Optiplex 9010 for $150 is not a bad deal as well, just bought a refurbed last week for $215 from eBay :(

    • It's a pretty good price but unfortunately we only have one of those left so I didn't put it in the description.

    • +1

Optiplex 9010 for $150 is not a bad deal as well

Video driver issues with that one since a windows update a few months back…

  • Is this the computer that you put a low profile graphics card into?

    • +5

You can technically put a 1050ti low profile card in this, my sister has been running this setup reliably at good FPS for around 3-4 years but there are a few caveats:

      • It will only fit in the 4x PCIE slot therefore bottlenecking the card slightly (although it does still benchmark pretty well).
      • It's a tight fit so airflow isn't that great.
    • +2

In addition to above, 9010 has 16x slot that will fit fine with enough clearance for double slots card

You can transfer them onto normal case if you have spare parts (case + psu) laying around

That way, you can put whatever full size graphics card instead of paying premium on low profile

You would need converter cables for motherboard power to your standard 24pin ATX PSU from ebay for the 9020

9010 has standard 24pin ATX, so no converter required

      • +2

All very good points, is there much interest still in the 9010s? If so we can get more in.

        • +1

for $150 the 9010's is good. Probably will buy one if you get them in for my parents.

        • I want to but a 9010 too. I have a 24pin ATX PSU.

PLEASE NOTE: The 'Courier' shipping method cannot be sent to parcel lockers or PO Boxes. If you require delivery to a parcel locker or PO Box please select "Regular Post".

What does that mean when I am not using a parcel locker or PO Box?

    • +1

It just means that if you want delivery to a PO Box or Parcel Locker or Parcel Collect then you need to select "regular post". If you have neither of those then you can use the courier method which is free to most metro areas (and even some regional).

      • -1

The Courier shipping shows up at free, no matter what address I enter.

        • Yes, so? The Courier delivery is FREE. That's why it's free.

  • +2

    FYI, shipping.

    Brisbane: Regular Post: $14.90
    Cairns: Regular Post: $22.20
    Sydney: Regular Post: $13.40
    Melbourne: Regular Post: $13.30

    • +3

Just select free courier so you don’t need to pay for shipping

  • Would this do for a media centre? I'd like a dedicated pc for movies etc.

The 9020 is good for this task, they are very quiet and pretty good on power. The main issue is that they dont have HDMI, only 2x display port and 1x VGA. This means you'd really need a discrete graphics card like a low profile GT1030 that has 1x HDMI 2.0 port so you can play 4k via HDMI, I think they're about $100. The built in HD 4600 will play 4k via Display Port but I don't think there are many tvs that have display port.

      • +3

$5 display port to hdmi cable from ebay would be fine.
That is what I use for my old Lenovo laptop with display port only.

      • You can use something like this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Displayport-DP-to-HDMI-Adapter-M…
To go to a HDMI only input.

        • +1

I haven't tested this so can't confirm it works but if it does I believe you wont be able to do 4k and wont have audio but I'm not 100% on this. If you're just after 1080p without audio it should work.

      • Display port -to- HDMI cable , is under $10 from ebay.

Worked fine for my 9010 , display out to 2x hdmi 1080p monitors , side by side

        • But that’s not 4k

          • @MuddyClear: I didn't try 4k, but I don't see why HDMI can't do 4k albeit at 30hz is fine for movie on TV

            • @dcep: Give it a try with your adapter and report back :)

        • please test 4k hevc 10bit

          • @pinkybrain: I don't have 4k display or TV to test

            • @dcep: you don't need 4k display or tv to test if it is playable and plays smoothly

              just need to play it…

          • @pinkybrain: Pushing the limits on a 3rd gen. Got the odd hitch and CPU is basically pegged at 100% during playback.

Might be OK on the 4th gen CPUs.

I think you need 5th or 6th gen for iGPU accelerated playback of 10bit HEVC.

            • @coxymla: any dells or whatever that has 4th gen?
4th gen are the i5 46xx or what models of cpu are 4th gen?
              isn't this 9020 4th gen?

              that is a shame…
i don't want to buy this + a low profile gpu..
which would then push it close to the $400 mark
since that can get the techfast deals which is a lot more better..

              • @pinkybrain: yeah
                4th gen = 9020 = 4xxx CPU
                3rd gen = 9010 = 3xxx CPU
                2nd gen = 990 = 2xxx CPU

                I was referring to @phunkydude's 9010.
                (I have a 990 and a 9010)

                • @coxymla: it would be good if anyone has the 9020 can confirm if it can playback 4k hevc 10bit and HDR content smoothly with the built in gpu..

With the 990 and 9010, which one is better?

so on your machines it can play 4k hevc 10bit and HDR but you experience occasional video lag/stutter?

                  • @pinkybrain: My 990 can't play it at all.
My 9010 can play it almost acceptably.

I doubt the 9020 can play it on the iGPU. I think it would still be using CPU decoding only.

                    • @coxymla: but would cpu decoding on the 9020 be good enough or will it struggle as well considering that your 9010 can play it almost acceptably.

By almost acceptably, do you mean there is still some slight lag occasionally or some other issues like occasional audio sync lag?

What type of 4k video have you tested?
                      -4k hevc 10 bit
                      -4k hevc 10 bit HDR

  • Really good price for a decent spec'd machine. Had one of these similar spec'd machines for many years and was great.

  • Can this be used for pfsense? Is there a PCI slot for 4 port Intel NIC? How much if no Windows 10 included?

    • The windows 10 licence is included in the bios and can't be removed (windows 8 licence digitally upgraded). There's two low profile pcie slots available and there are many low profile 4 port NICs so you shouldn't have any issues there.

    • +1

These would work well for that purpose, but I'd prefer to spend a little more and go for a passively cooled mini pc from QOTOM or equivalent. Take up way less room and less power to run. A more elegant solution.

  • We bought one of these about 18 months ago. Took out the CD and put in a 1TB HDD. Added a low profile 1050Ti. Works great, runs a fair few things without too much tweaking. No issue with things like Minecraft. My wife runs Planet Coaster, Sims 4 and the like with only a few things switched off.

    • I have one. I kept the DVD and used a SATA power splitter to add a 3.5" drive.

      • The 9020s have a different power connector for the DVD drive but I believe (can't confirm right now because I'm not at the warehouse) they have 2x SATA power connectors so with one used for the SSD there's one free. for a 3.5" drive, you'd just need to double sided tape the SSD somewhere else. The standard caddy in the 9020 does have the ability to mount 2x 2.5" drives though.

        • The SATA power comes from a non-standard connector on the motherboard. The cable splits in 2 and goes to a standard connector that goes to the HDD/SSD and there is a custom 2 pin connector that goes to the DVD drive. I used a splitter/Y-cable on the standard HDD/SSD one to give me a spare one for the extra drive. The motherboard has 3 SATA ports. No there isn't any standard mounting space for the extra drive. I kept the 3.5" HDD in the factory caddy and tucked the SSD under the blue clip on the top of the power supply.

          • @adam-07: Strange. All of the 9020s that we've had have a 2.5" caddy that fits 2x 2.5" disks and a sata power splitter (1 into 2) which makes it easy to mount / fit an extra 2.5". I can confirm all of the current lot have this as well.

            • @chiefbodge: I can only comment on the 2 9020s I have owned. Mine looks like they were specced with DVD + 3.5" HDD from the factory, which I think is why I needed the splitter. The spot where the 3.5" drive sits can totally fit 2 SSDs in there.

              • @adam-07: Ahh that explains it. We only ever get 2.5" HDD or 2.5"SSD so even though they only come with one drive the caddy has mounting spots for 2 drives and a splitter cable included.

  • Sorry for unrelated question. I have the Dell 9010 with core i7 3770 16GB RAM and 1050 TI low profile. This Dell Optiplex has the problem since day 1 (before I add an additional 8 RAM + 1050TI) that the screen is randomly flickering during the day (I have change the screen and cable so definitely not screen issue).
Unsure if there is any problem with RAM/VGA/Power/Main. If one of the components have problem, I am more than happy to buy another case and move everything over. Do you guy have any suggestion ?

    • +1

I haven't seen this before with the dells but I am wondering: What resolution and refresh rate are you running? If it's 4k or high refresh rate then I'd guess it's a cable issue, especially if you have tried multiple low quality cables. I find that with my 4k monitor only decent brand name cables work without any issues.

      • I am only using 1080p monitor. And it drives me crazy when playing. Imaging in the middle of the game, the screen just turn off and on… It happens more often if you play games

        • +1

Have you updated to latest bios and drivers?

        • +2

Could it be that your graphics card is overheating under load? And throttling back to avoid crashing completely but it gives you artifacting instead.

          • @adam-07: Possible but I have the same problem even only have the onboard output signal :(

            • +1

@ComputerPC: If this is a SFF 9010, I would check if you are at the limits of what the PSU can put out. They are 250w I think and your setup sounds as decked out as your could get for that PC.

Because the 9010 has a standard 24 pin ATX connector on the motherboard, you could run a standard ATX power supply externally and plug it in and see if it still happens.

Edit: I just reread your post to say it happened before you added the 1050ti. So my other suggestion would be to wipe windows and see if was a corruption in windows drivers somehow. If that's something you've done already, I'd look for a stress test/benchmark program to see if you can reproduce it. It might show up on a particular test and give you a clue about which component causes it. Also if possible try Linux with the same stress test to see if it happens on that.

              • @adam-07: It is indeed 9010. I did restore window multiple times. If it is power, then is there any option for that?

                • @ComputerPC: use single channel ram only to rule out power issue, and remove 1050 ti. if it's power then try low voltage ram, and remove as many peripherals as possible.

    • +2

With my hp sff, it flickered till I replaced the hdmi cable. Since then no drama.

      • I used dvi/hdmi/display port. Same issue..

    • +1

Sometimes, annoyingly, the only way to find the issue is to buy a spare and swap everything over one by one until it happens.

      • True. So you reckon 9020 is better than dell 9010?

        • +1

I looked at both when I was looking for a SFF PC. There isn't much between them spec wise and some design decisions dell made going from the 9010 to the 9020 made it worse. But the 9020 were a few years newer and I already had a 4th Gen Intel CPU desktop so I picked the 9020 to allow for parts swap. As you already have a 9010 I would buy another (even if it was a barebones one) because that will allow you to find the problem and give you a bunch of spares.

  • In a world where decent earbuds are $300+ it's pretty noice in this price.

  • +1

Would this be good for a 60+ parent who just wants internet browsing, email usage etc?

    • Yep perfect, quiet and reliable.

  • would this be suitable to use as a plex server to run 4K?

    • I'm not sure how well the integrated Intel HD 4600 would handle it. Anyone else had any experience with this?

It would definitely be fine with a Nvidia GT 1030 Low Profile.

  • Any idea on the idle power draw of these systems?

    • I've tested mine with a power meter. For the 9020, it draws about 20w-30w on idle.

  • All out of stock now. For those that missed out feel free to sign up to our mailing list and we'll let you know if/when we have another deal. Seeing how popular this has been we might also post another deal as well when more are available.

There might be one more available but i need to check tomorrow to confirm.

  • +1

A bit more stock available again. This time with choice of SSD size or HDD and optional GT1030 - add $125 (It's probably cheaper to buy elsewhere and DIY install the GPU but it's a good option for those who want something plug and play). GT1030 has hardware HEVC decoding and HDMI 2.0 output which makes it perfect for use as a HT PC.

  • Trying to buy/add to cart but doesn't seem to be going through - getting an error. What would be the expected delivery for Sydney metro?

  • If anyone is having activation issues please let me know. It looks like some of the machines one of the scripts we run has failed or someone has forgotten to run it. If this is the case I can assist with a simple fix or you can try this:

Start Menu > Type "cmd" right click on cmd click "run as administrator" and paste:

    wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

This will give you the product key embedded in the BIOS and you can use that with the change product key option on the windows activation screen.

I'm not sure how many people are affected by this - it shouldn't be too many, very sorry to those who are. We'll make sure we do better tests in the future so we don't miss anything.
