  • How does this compare to the Philips pico max? I'm looking to get the pico max at $850.

Full HD vs 4k, 800 lumens (not enough with ambient light) vs 3000 lm - different league, can't compare :-)

    • What???

    • I read your comment multiple times and I still don't understand what you're getting at.

    • Yes its a garden shed because thats what projectors are. Do you even google?

The Phillips pico is a portable projector where benq is a proper home theatre projector. Benq 4k and pico 1080. If i was choosing between the 2, id choose benq for permanent home theatre.

There are other cheaper projectors better than the phillips.

    • Can you share which one?

    • Can you share what I should consider please.

I want something just for the bedroom, in bed watching Netflix and watching it on a big screen instead of my 15" laptop screen. Something that can connect to a portable bluetooth speaker or some sort of external speaker would be needed too.

I like the philips pico max because it can be placed anywhere (i think), so I can watch it on my bedroom wall one day, and if I feel like it, I can watch it on my bedroom ceiling.

What's good at around the under $900 price range?

      thanks.

      • If you want a projector to be able to move around daily then yes the pico might be a good option. A bit pricey if you ask me. Have a look on ebay for cheaper alternatives around $200. With projectors you still need to add a source to it e.g kodi box or something similar.

        • I'm hoping to "cast" / connect to the projector from my Mac. Ideally wirelessly, if not, I wouldnt mind using a cable.

Do you reckon I go with a cheaper one from ebay? What would you recommend as a good value one. Balance between user friendliness and quality?

          • @jecec: Yes you can cast to these. Depends why do you want a projector over a tv? You can get good quality tv's for $800 mark. I have a cinema room ready for a projector and want one for atleast a 100 inch image which you cant get cheap for a tv yet. A good quality projector wont be cheap and if you want a cheap projector under a $1000, it wont be as good. This phillips pico is a projector to bring around and use for multiple purposes e.g meeting presentations during the day and the movies at night or out doors as it has 3 hour battery life. I think you should read reviews and se it for yourself if you can then decide. Note the pico is only 850 lumens so doesnt seem that bright.

            • @Richsta: Thanks Richsta for your insights.

My wife wouldnt "allow" TVs in the room and I've grown to like watching movies in the bedroom, so I thought a mini projector might be a good alternative to watching it on a bigger "screen".

I would probably have a bedside lamp beside me turned on while watching… battery life also wouldnt be a concern because I'll have it plugged it where possible, or use it only for 2h+ which is the max duration of a movie.

Getting a proper projector could be an alternative, however I'm not really keen to mount it in the bedroom. Something small that can stashed away would be ideal.

              • @jecec: I am like ypur wife except i have a tv in our bedroom and my wife watches tv till late when i am trying to sleep and i hate it. Ive tried to get rid of the tv from our room but failed.
I own a hand held type projector similar to the pico and you can watch movies and stuff but its not really bright enough to really enjoy it. Like watching a really dull lit tv. The pico sounds like it has everything you want.

                • @Richsta: Maybe you need to get her a pair of wireless headphones? :P

How many lumens is your hand held projector?

And regarding your comment on the projector not being bright enough, what is the ambient lighting condition when using the projector?

    Others options

    http://shop.benq.com.au/

    • Yes, always in & out of stock. $1249 for TK800M if you can stomach a refurb.

      • I got a tk800 and it worked just perfect. Now I got a ht3550. Refurbished are good because they have warranty and costs much less.

  • I've got a BenQ W8000 would this be a good upgrade over it?

    • Of course, if you want to watch 4K content. I don’t have access to this deal as there’s no Costco here in Tassie, but I run the BenQ w1070 in my home theatre and therefore would upgrade to this 4K product in a heart beat if it were possible.

The W8000 is a $4500 projector ad has THX certified. Based on price alone the w8000 seems like a better projector as it has lens shift which tk800m doesnt. Tk800m is brighter and lens lasts longer and is 4k quality (not a true 4k projected, pixel shifting). Id keep the w8000.

This has been same price since last few months, I am waiting for Costco to drop further or add coupon/warehouse discount!

There is a new model TK850M (HDR Pro + better colour accuracy), so price has to come down. Overall decent projector and super bright (perfect for living room!)

Last month it was on sale on ebay for under $1500. I missed it. The 850 sounds good but isnt out yet.
