If, like me, you're looking for a budget projector, apparently this is the real deal! It came down from $200-$250 early last year to $130-170 late last year, had been at its lowest at $119 since Christmas, and now $89 with a 25% off Amazon coupon.

The HAPPRUN H1 was one of the top 3 favourites in the budget category on this review, and there was some debate over whether it was better or worse than its L2 sibling, but this OzBargainer and this reviewer say it's actually the F5 that takes the cake:

Out of the two Happrun models in question, this model that I have linked is certainly the better buy. It comes with an additional Wifi connectivity option, a bigger projection size, and higher-quality video output.

I bought the H1 for $127, cancelled, bought the L2 for $102, and will probably return it, because I've already bought the F5 for $89, which is apparently better and cheaper.

    I got the L2 yesterday, an upgrade from my xuanpad. It is brighter and clearer. Down side is that it runs very hot like a small heater. I'm not sure if that's normal. Fan noise is louder but my volume is loud so didn't bother me. I'm just afraid the heat will eventually cause a fault.
    I looked at the F5 and the first manufacturing is 2022 so thought I try L2 as it is newer, maybe newer doesn't mean better.

    • Reading the reviews, looks like a few people have had issues with burning on the lens

      • +3

        It's the screen inside the projector that burns, not lens (which are made of glass). These LCD projectors are basically a LED light shone through a mobile phone screen; that's why they've become so affordable. There's even YouTube videos on how to build one like we used to with a cardboard box, but using an old phone, instead of photo slides. But the screen absorbs a lot of energy — how else would it form an image? — and that turns into heat. And, if not efficiently cooled, can burn. Personally, I was wondering whether putting a tray of ice under it would be a good idea…

        • Thanks for the info, yes thinking of putting a laptop cooler underneath or a fan.

    • Which xuanpad do you have ?

      • +1

        xuanpad m8-f, but the one on Amazon is the upgraded version, I have older version with no bluetooth

  • 12000 lumens? Surely not?

    • That's the lumens at the source, not from the screen.

    • Apparently light source lumens > LED lumens > ANSI lumens

      So more than likely 700 ANSI lumens?

  • I've purchased the L2 and will compare with the F5. Hopefully L2 runs with less heat (L2 is 70W vs F5 is 100W)

    • Amazon says the opposite — F5 is 70W, L2 is 100W — is it wrong? (The F5 is the all white one, and the L2 is the one with a black front in that eye-like shape.)

      • +1

        My bad, what was I smoking,

        I've purchased the F5 and will compare with the L2. Hopefully F5 runs with less heat (F5 is 70W vs L2 is 100W)

        • I bought them both too, but am wary of opening both to test, and not being able to return either. I haven't bought electronics at Amazon before; is that really a problem, or am I trippin?

          • +1

            @wisdomtooth: You can return if you have legit reason. I'm not sure if you have a new account that they maybe suspicious. I've returned another projector before because it was really crap and noisy.

  • +2

    Haha the journey continues. Can returns be done even if you open and try it out?
    Also can anybody comment on what the included 100 inch screen is like?

    • So confusing… The Chinese are TERRIBLE at communicating their products. Xiaomi does this too, with a dozen different variants of the same model phone, with no clear indication of what's up and what's down.

    • +1

      Yes you can return after trying. Screen is crap, it's folded so has creases, you have to really stretch it. I just repainted my wall, not projector paint, it's really expensive.

    So theoretically, we can take this in the caravan for the kids - WiFi hotspot from my phone, plug in the FireStick directly into the projector and get NetFlix/Disney plus etc? Is the sound ok from these or is a BT speaker recommended? Thanks.

    • +1

      I use a xuanpad and all the answers for your questions are Yes, this one shouldn’t be too different

    • I'm not expecting the speakers in the projector to be any good, and just generally prefer the sound to come from near the screen, not out the back where that noisy fan is whooshing from, so got a couple of pairable 16W T&G BT speakers for $14 from AliEx for it. But for the kids… the projector speakers should do fine.

      • Having said that, Happrun says the F5 has 15W speakers.

        I assume, by the picture, it's 2x15W, not 2x7.5W. Could the built-in speakers made to work together with BT ones, creating 4.0 surround sound?, I wonder…

  • I bought the projector which doesn't have WiFi from the last deal and was wondering if I should return it, but I am pretty happy with this setup:

    • Chromecast plugged into the HDMI port of the projector
    • USB port on the projector powers the Chromecast
    • Projector connected via bluetooth to my soundbar.
    • https://imgur.com/a/LK2vJ32
    • Hows the audio lag to the soundbar?

      • +1

        Audio lag, if any, is easily corrected for in mostly all video players (VLC, stremio, etc). But video lag is the problem for gamers — I'm not one — and that's where the H1 excels, as it has practically no processing between signal and projection, which gives it <20ms lags.

      • +2

        It's not noticeable at all

      • +2

        Vlc can delay audio to remove lag

    • Can you return it once opened? I don't usually buy stuff at Amazon, but this is what their change of mind policy says (so I'll probably won't even risk opening the L2 I got):

      Unless otherwise stated in this Change of Mind Return Policy, all items being returned for change of mind must be returned in the same condition in which you received the item. This means that, for change of mind returns:

      • New items must be returned unused, undamaged and unworn;
      • Items sold in Used and Renewed condition must not have any additional signs of use or damage;
        All items must not be damaged, missing parts or in unsellable condition because of customer negligence, misuse or tampering;
      • All items must not have been resized, damaged or otherwise altered after delivery;
      • Packaging must be unopened and seals intact (where applicable), except for fashion items, which can be opened; see Clothing, Jewellery, Shoes and Watches section; and
      • All packaging and documentation (e.g. boxes, manuals, warranty cards, certificates of authenticity etc.) must be included with the item being returned for change of mind.
      • Nah, won't return it, even though the is cheaper. I am not too fussed. It does what I want well

  • Pardon me, but how can we get the code?

    • There was no code, just a checkbox next to the price saying redeem. Is it gone? I'm glad pulled the trigger then 😊

      • +1

        looks to be gone :(

  • Does this have keystone correction? vertical or horizontal? auto or manual?

    • +1

      The HAPPRUN F5 projector features digital keystone correction, which allows for adjustments to be made when the projector is not directly in front of the screen. However, according to customer reviews, the keystone correction can be limited, and the projector works best when it is straight on and level with the screen. Some users have reported that when using the keystone correction, the corners or top and bottom of the image can become blurry, and no amount of focusing can fix this issue. To achieve the best image quality, it is recommended to position the projector directly in front of the screen, without relying on the keystone correction feature. (Brave AI Leo)

  • Is it correct that the 12000L is the F5?

    • +1

      That's what it says under specs.

    thanks OP! managed to score one just before it expired…
