This phone just refuses to drop in price :(
Is over 7 months old now and arguably the best deal was at launch.

I guess with discounted gift cards (10% if they're around) you could get it under $500 though.

  • Jacks days are coming to an end.

I used to say the same but my USB-C port on the 2XL is acting strange. Will charge no dramas, won't recognise its on dongle nor the wired pixel buds. Damn nuisance not having a jack.

      • Having a similar issue with iPhone. When plugged with the wired lightning headset, sometimes the headset mic doesn't work and reverts to phones mic. So if on a call and the phone's in the pocket, the other party has trouble hearing.

      • The DAC in the dongle may be faulty.

      • Had the same issue. Exchanged under warranty

Had the same problem. Clean out the port with a toothpick. I got so much fluff out of mine and it works perfectly now.

        • I tried to clean it out with a toothpick - quite a bit of fluff came out and now it charges perfectly. Still for some reason I can't connect either my wired USB-C headphones or the dongle. It recognises a dongle from the HTC U11 but it's apparently incompatible.

I've only got 3 months left and then I'll get a new phone - maybe use the U11 in the time being. Screen still operates fine on it, but glass has smashed in a few places. It's just a pain honestly.

        • Yep, keep going till you get the "ke-thunk" noise back when plugging in.

Headphone Jack may be dying but his brother Price will live forever.

  • This or Samsung S10e?

      • +3

        but worse software

        • +2

          And more expensive

    • dual sim in pixel 3a,esim and physical sim. Samsung single sim.

      • +11

You forgot to mention dim sim 🙂

        • +5

          South Melbourne market or regular?

      • Pixel 3a has dual Sim???

        • Technically yes, it can support a physical SIM and an eSIM. Practically, I'm not sure who supports eSIM in Australia.

          • -1

            @Helldog: Practically no then haha.

S10e is by far the better phone, this is a mid range phone with mid range specs and a great camera only.

      • Yeah this is true. Dual sim is not really a necessity for me. Battery life is more important.

        • Sounds like the 3a has bettery battery life than the S10e

  • Samsung s10e, if an extra $200 means nothing, but then you should get a Ferrari too since money is not an issue.

    • +4

A Ferrari is only $200 more? Where?

      • +3

Gumtree, lady owner, but no rwc

        • I guess we should all buy the Camry ex taxi, 912,865kms, no service history, has some rust, just to save a few dollars instead hey.

    • $65pm plan and $99 up front here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/504362 wipes the 3a across the floor

      • 3a has better camera and battery life, which are probably two of the biggest considerations in the mid-range market.

        • +1

Just missing all flagship features the s10e and pixel 4 has. It's why the 3a are mid range phones.

    • +2

Ohhhh, the good old analogy. Cars and phones.

      • Haha. Reminds me of the time my friend told me her brand new Audi got a minor scratch on the windows two months in and I commented saying I accidentally got a scratch on my Pixel 2 (back when it was a new model) on my second day of owning it because I didn't have a case for it yet. She got mighty pissed off and told me I can't compare the two. 🤷‍♂️

        • Exactly, its as bad as the argument TEER3X made.
You cant compare the prices between cars and phone, it's hundreds dollars vs thousands dollars.

  • +14

    Still $598 at officeworks

    Price match $549-5%=$521.55

    • +1

Yeah just picked one up for that at my local OW

  • -8

    $149 phone at best.

  • +1

I take an Oppo Reno 2z over this anyday.

    • +1

Yeah surely it is but Oppo are lazy with the updates tho.

      • Color OS 7 with Android 10 is coming out. I had both phones and user experience Oppo is a better everyday phone. Better DAC, Better photo processing speed, I mean who seriously wait 30 seconds after each photo? and Overall better gaming processing. The Pixel 3A is overall laggy when speed catching on Pokemon Go.

And Stock androids is barebone, Gimme the full suite like One UI on my Note 10.

        • Some people like me prefer stock android cos it doesn't contain any bloatware. I don't have pixel 3a but pixel 2 doesn't take 30s to take a photo? You're probably right about the gaming though as pixel phones don't have great hardware, but not everyone plays games on their mobile

          • @Flintz: The pixel 3a lacks the special processing unit that the pixel 2 has. Each photo you take on the 3a you have to wait for Google cam to process it plus the slower eMMC storage even make the image processing even longer. I know, I had the phone and sold it off. I stand by my comment that the Oppo Reno 2z is the better phone.

    This or Nokia 3315?

Got a 3310 now and looking to upgrade.

    • For $548 less you can get two cups and some string. App compatability is poor though.

  • +2

for extra 170$ you can get S10e at Officeworks pricematch Amazon to get for 725

    • And for another $200 more than that, you can get an S10.

      • and $200 more gets you fabulous iPhone 11

  • +3

Samsung a70 worth a look at this price range.

  • +1

    This or LG v40?

    • -3

No amount of software magic can overcome this phone spec deficit. Easily the LG v40

    • +4

The major reason to buy the 3a are the flagship level camera, the battery life, the headphone jack, and the software support. If you prefer playing pokemon go for hours on end, then maybe get something else.

      • +1

I have the Pixel 3a and I think it's a great phone. It takes great photos and is fast enough for use as a phone. I don't do any gaming so can't speak to that, but for my needs it is fine. Headphone jack is a big positive IMO.

  • P30

  • It says sale ends 15th December - does that mean at the end of the 15th or by the start of the 15th?

    • +1

The former i.e. you can take advantage of the offer on the 15th …

Did people know how slow the Snapdragon 660 paired with 4GB RAM on this phone is? This is android, not an Apple device, 4GB in 2019 is not going to cut it. It is slower than a SD835 from almost 3 years ago, slower in almost all respect to Apple A10 on the iPhone 7 from 2016. In my view even at the AU$549 or launch price at US$399($AUD600) couple months ago. The plastic build, sub-par trash OLED screen from no name manufacturer,it was never a good deal. Just buy an LG V30 or something like, I don't know, an iPhone 7 or a OnePlus phone, or find a good deal on Pixel 3.

Basically, to save moeny, don't buy a mid-range phone from this year, buy a flagship from last year.
