Samsung BD-D5300 Blu-Ray Player $128 - JB Hi-Fi - in Store Only

110

This player is DLNA certified so you can stream videos, photos and music over your network from a DLNA host. It also has Samsung's SmartHub and Apps. It may do Bigpond TV channels as well, but I haven't tried yet.

In general it has received good reviews, however some people have complained about some of the Apps freezing and taking long times to load. Still a bargain in my book! Website is showing "Not Available", but I just bought one in store from Elizabeth St, Melbourne for the same price. It is currently advertised at $168 in store, but JB will match their online price.

  • Can this be made region free for DVDs? Presumably Blu Ray is region locked.

    Never mind, found instructions here:

  • How does this one compare to $99 Phlips selling at DSE? Is this one more superior than Phlips bluray player?

That thread doesn't confirm if the Philips does streaming. It was asked but I didn't see a reply. I think the Sammy does from the above description.

  • Also note that some JB stores will not match the online store

  • Can anyone know if samsung capable to display foreign characters on DLNA files? I've got a LG but will not display Chinese/Japanese file names when browsing the files on the DLNA server… :-(

  • Not sure how this one compared to the bd-c5500 which I have (it looks very similar). The bd-c5500 can be made region free for DVD's (which is nice if you need it), but it is very sluggish, frequently unresponsive to the remote (though not to my receiver's universal remote), and crashes often. The bd-c5500 cannot be paused for more than about 10 minutes - it will crash and not respond until you remove the disk. You can not play certain cd's which also have pc-content on them - it simply won't play, because it is seen as "mixed content".

I will not buy another samsung blu-ray again, but that's just me. Thought I'd share my experience.

  • This is a model clearance , new model BD-D5100

  • fyi link to manual for this model. Will play divx, xvid etc off usb as well.

  • Does this play H264?

    • According to the manual it plays H.264, see page 13 of manual above for more details :)

I have the predecessor the BD-C5500 unit and can confirm it streams AVI/MKV across wired LAN via a DLnA server fine. The interface is similar to a Western Digital Live (not Live Hub) in that it is very simple and not overly fancy. It automatically detects DLnA servers on the network and makes them available - it won't stream from regular SMB network shares or anything like that.

The region hack to make it DVD region free works and is permanent, surviving subsequent firmware upgrades in my experience. There is no Blu-ray all-zone hack - it is locked to zone B. I imagine that this new unit is very similar in its capabilities.

I also agree with "Make it so" that the unit can be unstable. I have a 50/50 chance from turning the machine on to playing a file over DLnA that the machine will just lock up. I also have a 50/50 chance that turning the machine on with a DVD already in the drive will crash it to a black screen before the menu even loads.

Those gripes aside - and you would think they would annoy more than they actually do - the unit isn't bad at what it does. I probably would look elsewhere for low-end players next time, however.

  • I have the C5900 and the only difference seems to be that it supports 3D, which I don't think this one does, and which I personally think isn't worth it at present anyway. I have made it region free for DVD's, which I think most Samsung BD players can do (Google it and if you can't find this model the codes seem to work across similar models), but can't find a way to make it region free for Blu-Rays. As many will know, Amazon UK has lots of cheap Blu-Rays that work straight off because UK and AU are region B for BD's. I recommend www.blu-ray.com to see the latest price drops and to see if American Blu-Rays are region free (many are), plus for good reviews of picture and sound quality.

As far as the player itself, I am very happy with it. I was told by the guy in JB HiFi that it had the broadest range of playback capabilities of any Blu-Ray player around. It also has a live TV interface that Samsung seem to have updated about 3-4 times in the two months I've had it. The live TV does iView (though it's not perfect and doesn't allow ISP peering for free downloads because I think they've diverted through another site to make it work outside a PC/flash interface), Google Maps, NRL and AFL update apps, Youtube, Vimeo and about three other online video streaming sites, , BBC News (text only), some American news (ABC or CBS?? - text), Weather, Movie reviews and local AU session times, Gigs (haven't tried), Facebook, plus a stack of reasonable games. Only has 65Mb of internal memory for these apps so you have to be a little selective but it's pretty good. One of the game apps is an interface that allows you to download games on a per-play basis (free) at about 1-2Mb per game, which stops them filling up the internal memory, and you can login to keep scores etc.

To network it I got an ASUS RT-N12 wireless router for about $60 and installed Tomato router firmware to make it a wireless to ethernet adapter and that gives me a four port hub near my TV.

  • I saw this price at JB today, was tossing up between this and the Soniq B100 for $99, went for the Soniq due to being DVD and Bluray region hackable. I'm sure the Samsung would have better picture quality, but I want to be able to buy cheap Blurays from Amazon and have no hassles playing them. There was 2 left at Greensborough if anyone is looking for one.
