Where Do You Buy Your Wine?

Where should I trust deals from?

VinoMofo
Virgin Wines
Skye Cellars
WineNutt
WineDirect
Straight from Dan Murphys

I actually bought a pack off eBay, I tried Googling wine by wine and with the 20% off it seemed like good value.

I'm not a huge wine drinker, but definitely want to always keep some decent red on hand.

Thanks

I go to any shop and get the 2nd cheapest wine.

    • cleanskin with a label. Or the fancier box?

    • Why 2nd cheapest?

      • Doesn't want to be seen as cheap.

    Aldi

    Dan Murphy’s or Aldi
Look for the Dans members 2 for 1 deals, if you find a good one, go back and fill a trolley.
Most of those online mixed deals have one or two goodies and the rest of them are awful.
As a rough rule most South Australian wines are good in that choosing blindly, you will have a higher strike rate.
If you’re in Sydney, Kemeneys have good hidden labels and you can usually find out what specific wine it is

    • I noticed that, 1-2 food wines and the rest cheap!

Buy a cheap goon bag, slash it with your blade, then take in the nectar as if you were drinking your urine from a snake skin. Bliss.

2 Bottles of Castillo San Simon Crianza Monastrell 2014

2 Bottles of Zodiac Shiraz NV

I'll keep an eye out at Dan's for member deals!

    Winery or specialist wine merchants.

I find First Choice isn't bad. Just look for the 6 for $36 deals.

    I buy from Naked Wines.

I got annoyed with going to Dan Murphys and buying another house brand.

I like the fact that Naked directly funds wine makers and there is lots of choice. I do their $40/month Wine Angel thing. You can turn it off any time.
They have a referral system that gives you $100 off for new customers. I don't know how to post it here but PM if you want it. I get a $30 credit as well.

I also follow Chris Gregson the Outstanding Wine Man. https://outstandingwines.blogspot.com/
He was my wine merchant for 20 years until he retired. Now he does wine reviews for fun and does a few referrals to good deals from industry mates.
His reviews are very honest. For the last 10 years of our business relationship I'd just call him and say "send me a mixed dozen of what you think I'd like. I need 3 sparkling, 5 whites, a sticky and 3 reds."

  • First Choice is my 1st choice, staff are friendly and helpful. Plus spend over $10 and get the $10 specials on the counter, (often below half price) staff at my local Dans couldn’t care less.

BWS have 25% off occasionally, last one few weeks ago. DM will price beat too.

  • Try Langtons for premium / hard to get wines. When I was a keen collector, that's my go to site.

I have stopped drinking (personal choice for now) and therefore have a stash but have no idea what to do with them down the track.

  • "I'm not a huge wine drinker,"

Just find one of the larger retail chains that is convenient to you, and buy a few of their specials. Set your budget, but there are plenty of "decent red" wines. I would stick to known labels if I were you.

If you get more into wines, then seeking out and finding / supporting smaller labels and winemakers can be part of the fun.

If you're just looking for a decent reds to have on hand, head to the Barossa for the afternoon, or the Riverland for a weekend (there are some hidden gems there), go into a couple of cellar doors and tell them exactly what you've put in the last sentence of the post… Anyone half decent in a cellar door will make some suggestions for you… They may not all be $10/bottle (although you might, I saw back vintage wines being cleared for $15/bottle recently, or $75/6-pack- so anything's possible)… But it will be a more enjoyable experience and you'll probably find yourself enjoying the wine more as a result.

  • Dan Murphys or Naked Wines.
