How Much Does Your Dentist Charge You?

Haven't been to the dentist for a few years, thought it was time for a check up. Rang my local after recommended by family and asked how much I should expect to pay just for the minimum. Was told it would be around $280-300.

Curious to know what sorts of prices people usually pay? I'm not with any private health fund and I'm in western Sydney (if location matters)

$60 cash for a 10 to 15 minute check up and clean.

    • $60 Cash

      Why Cash?

      • no records, they cant get sued

Lol you need to make records to do a checkup

      • I don’t feel like paying $120 or $300.

    • is it oral check?

  • Just for a checkup and clean? $280 is way too much. No more than about $120.

    • And possible x-ray because I haven't been in a few years

      • Those normally cost around 30-odd a pop, and they will take two x-rays (one on each side), so around 60-70.

Also, it's possible they've given you the upper end of the estimate just so you don't end up experiencing bill shock, it could come out to be somewhat less on the day.

Prices vary a lot from one dentist to the other.

I went to a dentist in Barangaroo and he did charge me $300 for a simple checkup & clean.

          • @vikvance: Ouch! Though I guess if one wanted to charge those kind of rates and get away with it, Barangaroo would be the place to do it.

For clarification, all of the rough prices I listed above were for two suburban dental clinics I've been to.

            • @bai tu: The place I go in Melbourne bulk bills the x-rays, no out of pocket cost, maybe that's unusual they don't charge a bit extra though… It's around $170-200, no gap cover with my Bupa health insurance for a check-up and clean.

              • @conan2000: Same as my place. Check up and clean with X-rays comes to around $150. X rays weren't even on the invoice, which makes sense since the dentist actually owns them and uses them to lock you in. That's their expense.

      • I've got private health insurance this year and just went to the dentist after a dozen years. Did some xrays and had a pretty thorough teeth clean (no anaesthetic). Cost me $110 from $300, after the discounts and the medibank rebates. I had been wondering if I was charged too much.

1st time check up, clean, scale, xrays, fluoride. Probably $250 and take 45 min.

    Once you factor in the x-rays and a clean, $200 - $300 isn't unusual.

For a basic "check only" around $120 in my experience.

How much does your dentist charge you?

About once or twice a week he always aims for my back when his charging me…

  • When I went to the dentist earlier this year, they charged me $150 for a check up, x-rays, and a clean.

This was South East of Melbourne.

I googled for the cheapest dentist I could find in my area and I was actually pretty happy with the result.

        Bupa

      • I'm with HCF and I get this deal - clean and check up twice a year and mine included my x-rays

    • How much are you paying per month?

      • 300 for the family of 4 including hospital and extras

  • National Dental Care in Brisbane CBD charge $276 for a checkup and clean, scale, and fluoride. Probably takes 30 min.

  • Cheap return flight to Asia $450 check up free-$5 USD Xray $5 crowns $150-$450 holiday priceless

  • My dentist in Sydney charges about $160 for a normal checkup and clean. Closer to $200 with X-rays.

  • $128

  • Time it with a holiday

    Bali $400 - $500 return

Dentist checkup scale and polish $30

  • Nogapsdental (sydney branches) free with a fund or around $150 clean, check and x rays

  • My local dental clinic charges $135 for check up and clean without private insurance. Takes 20-30 minutes.

  • Used to go to an absolute scammer dentist who charged $350 for a check up and clean [and throw on some unnecessary xrays to pump the price and put radiation in my face] (ridiculous extortion). Now I pay $100 for checkup and clean.

  • I paid $400 for a checkup and 2 xrays only. Have to go back and get a periodontal clean with 2 fillings. Cost $1400. This is in Pymble.

  • Hack

Go to gp. Get referral for an x-ray at a local imaging centre.

Get your x-rays done for free (bulk billed) at imaging centre, then take the results to your dentist on the day of your check up

    • Those aren't the x-rays we usually need lol

      • It's usually the same thing :)

        • Imaging centres take OPG's- guidelines state once every 5-10 years if no indication for

We need bitewings- guidelines state every 6 months to 2 years depending on individual risk. Imaging centres cannot take these

$55 for checkup which included x-ray. I don't have insurance and didn't give my medicare card. I was surprised at the price. Receptionist said I wasn't charged for xray, so maybe Dentist was feeling generous that day. It was my first visit to Dentist in 10 years. Got the all clear too!

    • $55 for checkup which included x-ray.

Very good. Give this person a medal for finding what may be the best price in Sydney.

      • Maybe cerealJay should post it as a deal? Marked as long-running of course. Though I'm not sure the dentist will appreciate being OzBargained.

        • No point naming as the price I got was odd, it should have been more. It was possibly my impressive teeth,;, or his apology for having a cold which he wasn't trying to hide.

  • $179 is what my dentist charges for clean, checkup and xrays for ppl w/o insurance.

She charges me $0 gap twice a year as I have private health insurance.

  • My dentist in Surry Hills charges me $300 >.<

  • You shouldnt pay more than $150-180 for a clean and check up, even with X rays.

All in all dentist prices are very reasonable, seems to have gone down over the years. If it was Medicare funded you wouldn't have to pay anything but you'd be waiting for an appointment for months or even years, and if you chipped a tooth you'd have to sit in triage along with the millions of other people who are coming in for a general clean or check up thinking it's an emergency. No thanks.

  • Last time I checked it was $120 for a clean.
