Thanks for posting. Are those better than the KB’s ones? Could someone please share their experiences?

Anyone had any “incidents” after eating this brand?

@jv tends to post less when these are on special.

No one else has commented enough to draw any further conclusions

      • Appreciate the analysis

Yes, had the whole 41 pack prawn hargows to myself and was filled with regret.

Cheers. Downvoted but worth the info

Opinions on the hargow Vs KB?

  • +2

I have tried 3-4 difference brand Hargow. In my opinion, the Mr Chen's Prawn Hargow probably taste closest to the restaurant. But don't buy too much, tried it yourself first before stock up.

yes I want cheap yum cha at home, any other product recommendations?

      • +1

I honestly do not understand why people do not go to their local Asian grocer, almost always the dumplings are better and cheaper with far more variety.

        • It's hard to find like for like.
Like the sugar cane prawns and giant rice noodles where they have a couple prawns in them and soak in the dark brown sauce (which I want to know)

Recently I found the most similar sweet and Sour sauce which is Lee Kum Kee

  • Do people use dipping sauces with these? If so any recommendations… I'm getting a little tired of soy sauce and/or Vietnamese dipping sauce. (occasional blending in of a little sesame oil)

    • +1

      Try sriracha sauce.

      • try Lee Kum Kee sweet and sour sauce

      • will do!

      • Cheers.

Chilli oil or vinegar sauce. If you want chili kick, cut birds eye chili and add to soy sauce or vinegar sauce.

      • +2

i dont think anybody named chris farley would like a chillikick

        • +1

lol, actually I totally get that comment but the truth is I quite like chilli.
Huge fan of Indian food and can handle hotter/spicier than most! :O]

      • hmmm. Will definitely try. Never thought about using vinegar. Cheers.

Use sweet chilli little soy sauce little ginger and drop of seasame oil and add red chilli how spicy you like and little lemon juice. I use same suace for stir fry too. If you want use as salad dressing add some olive oil and rice vinegar.

Try grated ginger with Chinese red vinegar
optional: drip of sesame oil with light soy sauce

      Plenty other sauces

      • Whoa, that's what I'm talkin' about!
        Many thanks.

try lee kum kee chili garlic sauce with or without soy sauce.

    • They do come with a dipping sauce but I would definitely add some to it as already mentioned.

For the prawn gyoza (which is supposed to be Japanese style dumplings), a typical dipping sauce recipe as follows:

      • 1/2 cup Japanese soy sauce
      • 1/3 cup rice vinegar
      • 1 tsp sesame oil
      • 1 tsp Japanese chilli oil (optional, adjust to taste)

Adjust quantities depending on how much sauce you want to make. It should keep in fridge for a week.

    Made in Vietnam.

    Hmm.

    • Ah shit! I avoid products of Vietnam when I can, but it looks like made in Dandenong or? Is Vietnam part of the name? I'm confused

      • +1

Its dependent on which product you're looking at, their seafood stuff is imported, whilst the pork dunpling is made in Australia

So woolworths is just saying where the product was made, and also listing where their registered address is, so Dandenong

I saw these for sale yesterday at woolies and purchased a pack of the Prawn Hargow to try this morning. I found them very bland, nowhere near as good as a proper Yum Cha place. The pastry was basically tasteless and the prawns didn't have much flavour. Thankfully they came with a surprisingly good dipping sauce, which I had to drown the hargow in to enjoy. I haven't tried the KB ones so can't compare.
However I boiled the hargow to prepare them, which might have affected the taste. I'll give steaming a try tomorrow and see if it changes anything.

I haven't tried these yet, but the KB have quite a strong prawn taste, they are quite good.

    • Can you recommend a good steamer

  • +1

These actually went up in price, use to be $8.50 when they were half-price. Refer to comment below.

Are you thinking of the Coles 750g which are 8.50 half price?

      • Just double checked, and you're right.

        Previous My Chen's Family Pack:

Mr Chens Family Pack Vegetable Dumplings 1kg
Mr Chens Family Prawn Hargow 750g
Mr Chens Family Pack Steam Dumpling Selection 625g

Prawn Hargow was only 750g. The 1kg packs actually works out cheaper per grams.

Anyone tried cooking the gyozas in an air fryer?

    • Yes, they came out nice an crispy, but not too hard. Probably not the traditional way to have them but I quite enjoyed them that way. Quick and easy too :)

      • Thanks. Will try one out as Guinea pig lol
