ASUS RT-N56U Promotion ($50 VISA Gift Card) & RT-N16 Promotion ($30 VISA Gift Card)

380

Purchase the ASUS RT-N56U or/and RT-N16 wireless N Router from any participating retailers and receive $50 (RT-N56U) or/and $30 (RT-N16) VISA GIFT CARD by redemption during 1/6/2011 ~ 31/08/2011.

Prices at MSY:
RT-N56U - $182
RT-N16 - $143

Both routers have 2 USB ports (printer server & usb hard drive support). RT-N56U is a simultaneous dual band N router. RT-N16 is a single band N router (2.4GHz, 300Mbps). Both have gigabit ethernet ports. Taking the gift card into consideration, Asus RT-N56U is probably the cheapest simultaneous dual band N router at the moment (or at least one of the cheapest).

RT-N16 is supported by DD-WRT and there are also other custom firmware options. RT-N56U is not supported by DD-WRT (hopefully will be). RT-N16 uses Broadcom chipset, though Asus did not implement the dual band feature (chipset supports it but too few antennas put inside).

RT-N66U is probably on its way might have something to do with the promotion (basically an upgraded version of RT-N16 with simultaneous dual band N + more RAM/ROM).

Found this promotion on whirlpool forum initially.

To redeem, you need to:
1. Fill in & submit the form online.
2. Scan the receipt into electronic format (PDF or JPG I assume).
3. Take a photo of the serial number/barcode from the bottom of the box.
4. e-mail #2, #3 and your details to [email protected].

You should get an e-mail reply from Asus fairly quickly. However, the card will take 2-4 weeks to arrive.

Come on mate, this offer is there for monthes, I got and spent the $50 already….

  • +1

Thanks a million OP. I have to buy 2 of these this week and this is just perfect. Just spent last couple of nights researching which wireless N routers with USB provide the greatest range and throughput combined with quickest speeds for HDDs attached via USB (essentially a pseudo NAS). Short of speeds provided by a proper NAS, all my research shows the N56U being the best of the lot (and much better than my current apple airport extreme which is quite slow at accessing the USB HDD). My first thoughts when I saw this router was gimmicky asus aesthetics that are all show but as it turns out, it has top notch performance.

So yeah, please don't remove and thanks again - this already was an awesome router at $182, but at $132 I challenge anyone to find a better dual band router with gigabit and USB AND most importantly, this level of performance!

    • Guess you will disappoint as the usb drive for ASUS router with wireless N is like crap, you need a NAS for sure. For me the usb only can be used as backup most, max USB drive reading speed can get around 5-6MB/s using wireless N and 8MB/s for Giga cable.

      • That sounds more like my airport extreme speeds. Are you talking specifically about the N56U? as other asus routers do have slower usb connections. Would be good to know as I found 2 reviews of this router (N56U) which said it was much higher than the figures you say.

        • The one I am using atm is RT-N56U, the review is cable->router->wireless N which is around 3m from the router you may can get around 12-15MB/s

But we are talking about the USB, so USB HD->router->PC with DWA_547, 5-6MB/s, if i use a fast NAS connect with a cable then i can get around 9MB/s with 5m away and one wall apart.

        • thanks for letting me know, that sure sounds disappointing. Luckily I do have a NAS as well (picked up the WD sharespace deal earlier) but was hoping to use this at my other place. might just purchase one unit first to have a play with rather than ordering 2 right away. are the wireless n capabilities otherwise good ie range and throughput?

        • His figures aren't too far from SmallNetBuilder's figures - 13MB/s for read (that would be via gigabit ethernet). When it comes to file reading speed, 9MB or 13MB is roughly in the same range (slow).

Airport Extreme Pro is a pretty good router (esp. the newer revisions). It is suppose to be one of the faster dual band routers. I wouldn't expect RT-N56U to perform significantly better.

        • The best thing I found out from the RT-N56U is the wireless N range is awesome, I place my router on the floor in the middle of my home, and I still get around 2 bar signal from my bedroom using iPad(totally 3 bar) which 10-15m away with 5 walls apart (including 2 brick walls!!!). while all my other routers can't ever see the signal at all. Apple airport extreme is a very good router too, don't think you can make huge difference with the upgrade.

  • Good price. Would have got it if not for lack of VOIP.

  • Thanks mate, been looking for a new router. Assuming this holds up when I find the tome to research a little, you'll have made my life a lot easier.

  • Prices at MSY:

    wireless1.com.au have the RT-N56U for $199 delivered -

    PROMOTION CODE: 48hours

This promotion will finish on the 5th of August, 2011.

All depends what your shipping rate is at MSY

  • oh fuuu. I bought this off expansys.com.au. Dont suppose the offer counts for that? :(

    • Should be fine. You just need a proper invoice/receipt (with the dealer's ABN). If in doubt, call the retailer or Asus.

    • That's what I was wondering.

      It says:

To be eligible to receive a bonus VISA gift card, eligible claimants must purchase a ASUS RT-N56U or/and RT-N16 Wireless Router ("Participating Products") from an authorised participating computer dealer stores within Australia between 1/06/2011 and close of business on 31/08/2011 (Promotional Period).

In promo it links only to these stores:

      • +1

I did not buy it from one of those stores. Though, the store I bought it from did tell me I about the promotion. Asus approved my entry.

But, if you are worried, get it from one of those stores listed in the page. MSY prices for those 2 routers are hard to beat in Australia (and Amazon US won't ship Asus routers here). The closest MSY is too far from my place, otherwise I would have purchased it from MSY.

        • Thanks mate. Not worried now ;).

  • sorry, im not very tech savvy - hopefully someone can give me advice - can i plug this into my belkin modem/wireless router in order to boost my wireless range?

    • These are wireless routers.

    • +1

Extending wireless networks is very technical… and there are a number of ways to do it.
Personally I think there are better alternatives..

There are range extenders solely designed for the purpose that might suit your needs better and probably at lower cost (at least lower than the N56).

SIMPLE (but not elegant): If you intend on running a cable to the other end of the house from the Belkin and then plugging in this router, then yes it will.. sort of. (it'll provide a second network so you woould have to disconnect from the Belkin and then re-connect to the ASUS)

SIMPLE: Turn off the Belkin wireless and buy the N56 which has dual band wireless N and should have better range.

COMPLICATED: The N56 (and possibly N16) router is WDS capable which means it can literally extend your wireless network seamlessly, without running a separate cable and without creating a second network. BUT it's doubtful that your Belkin supports WDS and even if it does, different brands often can't "talk" to each other to set up WDS reliably.

VERY COMPLICATED: I'm pretty sure both can be flashed with DD-WRT which would allow you to turn them into repeaters, but then you may as well just buy a repeater device.

The easiest way to extend the wireless range is to get Asus RT-N13U. At the bottom of the router, there is a switch, change it to repeater mode. It is wireless repeating so no wire required. You still need to find a good place to put it though (but since it is wireless repeating, it does not need to be very close to your main router). Middle of the house perhaps (or maybe upstairs, if you have 2 storey house and the main router is downstairs).

Then, login to the router, find the wireless LAN of the main router, join it (by typing in relevant information - e.g. WPA password) and you are ready to go.

Neither N16 or N56U support wireless repeating from the Asus stock firmware (because it is expected that these 2 routers will be your main router, not your secondary router/repeater). However, since N16 has DD-WRT support (or OLEG based firmware support), you can change firmware and do something similiar…. though the RT-N13U method is the easiest.

  • RT-N16 is the ultimate awesome router! love it!!!!

  • hi, does this come with ADSL Modem ?

    • +2

      Router only I think.

  • I signed up with Astrill and my existing Netgear N600 dual band router does not have DD-WRT which is crppy. However, I was always waiting for the price on the RT-N16 to come down as I got Astrill VPN and they use the RT-N16 in their labs and passively endorse it (http://blog.astrill.com/index.php/tag/wifi-router/). Was thinking of using the existing router for Australian connections and the Asus for the VPN - anyone done this? In any case - here goes!!

  • I haven't received a reply email yet (sent my email on Sunday) - should I be concerned?
