Recommendations on Options at Mobile + NBN Contract Expiry

Hi,

I've got the following 3 service contracts expiring in the next 3 weeks.

  1. Telstra $59pm 15GB data with a Pixel 2. The contract ends Dec 19.
  2. Optus $59pm 20GB data with an iPhone 8. The contract ends Dec 17.
  3. Optus $80pm NBN50/20 (but $20 discount applied to the mobile bill, not the NBN bill as per an offer, but I have been told it will no longer be effective once the contract expires.) The contract ends Dec 5.

So the current total is at $59 + $59 + $80 - $20 = $178.

Requirements

  1. The current service on Telstra requires Wi-Fi calling.
And it only requires about 3GB data per month.
  2. The current service on Optus requires 10GB data per month the minimum.
Prefer to have Wi-Fi calling as well, but not essential.

What are the best options I have? The current device + postpaid plans are ridiculously expensive which is the reason for me asking this question in the first place.

I wouldn't mind upgrading the devices (at least the Pixel 2 because its current battery life is horrendous, but I want to stay with a Pixel or an iPhone) and upgrading the NBN to 100/40 as long as the total cost does not blow out of proportions.

What I think the best right now is, switch both mobile services to boost for a month ($20 + $30), and if I'm happy, commit to a 12 month long expiry. (I don't have a solution if I am not happy with boost). Since historically there has been great device + postpaid deals in December, I don't want to commit to a 12-month long expiry prepaid sim plan immediately. Then, go for Superloop or Aussie Broadband NBN plan if it is cheaper OR faster for ~$10 than the current Optus plan which will switch to an $80pm month to month plan at contract expiry.

All suggestions are appreciated.

Boost should give you identical coverage as your Telstra service. I can confirm it comes with wi-fi calling.

If you switched them both over, your total mobile bill would be $37.50 a month (paying full bottle for a $150 plan and a $300 plan). That saves you $80.50 a month. Save up for six months and buy a new phone to replace your Pixel 2.

Or, if you still enjoy the Pixel 2, maybe a battery replacement would help. A quick look suggests it would cost about $170. You might find cheaper.

Edit: I just realised you have to put that money for Boost out up front. But over a year the math works out.

    • I'm a bit hesitant to commit to a long-expiry plan right now because I feel I will miss out on an offer like the $59pm Pixel 2/2XL offers we had in December couple of years ago. Or, given the current prices of the devices, is it almost impossible such a good deal might pop up anytime soon?

    • for both JB hi-fi $65 month with $500 gift card.
How do I get this offer with the current Telstra service though?

      NBN: Belong 50/20 $55 12 month
Hope it's not a downgrade from Optus. I have zero issues with Optus, other than the pricing.

      • To get the JB offer, you'd need to port out and port back in.

With Boost, you'll need a special blank SIM if migrating from Telstra; they'll ship one out for free. Having said that, visual voicemail and One Number aside, Boost is the same as Telstra.

Belong is fine (been on them a few days now); it's provisioned as a 50/20 service. It can be painful to get on if you're on FTTC though as you may need to disconnect and reconnect…

    • Yeah I went for the superloop 100/40 and it got activated today.
