Merida Crossway 15-MD Matt Titan/Black (2019) $492 C&C Only @ 99 Bikes

90

I have been on the market for an entry-level hybrid bike for my everyday commute (~10 km each way).
A month ago, I found this bike for $699 and nearly bought it, but for some reasons I can't recollect I postponed my purchase.
Today, I was sitting in the Penang Airport lounge sufring the internet and seeking for bike deals and accidently saw this deal, the bike I was ready to but for $699, now is $492.

Clarification #1

My first choice was the Reid Urban X2 as they c/w hydraulic brakes.
Reid Urban X2

However, 2 of my, so to speak, cycling experts independently (they dont know each other) suggested the merida md-15 despite mech brakes, even when it was at its retail price of $699.
The first said that after 20 km a day on a solid fork I might need new arms/tongue tip/teeth.
The second said something about wheels, can't remember what exactly :-)

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2019

  • 10km is heaps.

I'm not very fit but I was doing 30km round trip each day when I lost my license recently :(

A flat 10 km is nothing, but 10km with hills may be a bit more of a challenge. You'll find that even if it's hard to start with, you'll get conditioned quite quickly and 10km should be easy for any normal person after a only couple of weeks.

  • How do people rate this bike? I might go check it out instore.

Thanks OP, will check it out today. My son has been asking for Trek marlin5 with hydraulic disc breaks and paddle shift gear, however this around $150 cheaper. I am not a bike rider dont know much about bikes. So any advise on comparkng the Trek with this one would be helpful please..

    • The Trek has a slightly better fork, brakes and aesthetically looks better, both are manufactured and partly assembled in Taiwan. If your son plans on doing some beginner single track I would go for the Trek

This is a hybrid, the Trek is a mountain bike, so that's the biggest difference (i.e. completely different geometry). I wouldn't take the merida on single track as the handling will leave much to be desired. Ask your son what he wants the bike for. It looks like the merida has mechanical disk brakes while the Trek has hydraulic so much better plus less maintenance. Heaps of other differences, the Trek actually seems a decent bike for the price, while the Merida is crap crap crap at it's retail price.

Biggest decision point, does he plan to go off road?

Off road -> suspension and fat knobbly tyres. This makes for a slower bike that handles dirt better
On road -> no suspension, thinner tyres. Because on the road you want to go as fast as possible with as little effort as possible.

You'll notice most bike brands share the same components (pedals, gears, rims, tyres etc) so it's better to evaluate each of these than the sticker on the frame.

Lastly, always buy from your local bike shop. Those Kmart bikes are cheap because they are cheap. You'll be wanting repairs and servicing so buy from the guy who will be fixing it.

    • Thanks for your suggestions

  • Im looking for a bike to follow my kids around on (footpaths, gravel tracks) nothing crazy - kids are only 7/4/1. Was thinking something like this one, or maybe something like this from anaconda but i have no idea what might be the difference https://www.anacondastores.com/cycling/bikes/urban-bikes/flu…
FYI im moderately fit but am not a cycling fan at all…

A $50 bike off Gumtree if you have any basic mechanical skills.

    • Good on you for starting your 1 year old early!

The first said that after 20 km a day on a solid fork I might need new arms/tongue tip/teeth.

    Not on road and pathways..
My first ever MTB had a Rigid fork and I still have a full mouth of teeth, tongue tip and my original arms.
