Not only do they not trigger for amber turning arrows, but they also don't trigger for amber lights.

The red light cameras are just that - red-light cameras. Red, not amber. And they give some leeway after the light has changed to red before they activate.

-11. What if I entered the intersection on a yellow (amber) light?

Revenue NSW reviews all images and will only take enforcement action when it is clear that a vehicle has proceeded through a red light at an intersection.

Doesn't mention amber arrow but apparently @zeggie is adamant they are a different case.

The offence is RED light, not amber.

Police can issue for Amber not a Camera.

  • I'm not aware of any cameras that trigger for turns, period. And all normal red light cameras trigger after the light turns red. The clarification in the legislation is in the case where your front wheels are across the line when the light is amber, but your car finishes going over the line after the light turns red. In that situation the camera triggers and you're also liable per the law.

Yea they do turns. Not RED permitted after stopping as this would obviously not work :))

    Reposted from above.

Correct answer rephrased - a yellow turn arrow light combined with a red proceed light (the round one) will trigger the camera.

Image will be eyeballed before infringement is issued. All images are reviewed manually

You don't have to take my word for it. Try it yourself and see. I welcome anyone to try and report back.

Go to your nearest red light camera intersection with identical lights (ie. left turn arrow) as OP's.

In lane 1 wait for the proceed light to go red. Wait for the left turn arrow to go green. Turn left. Does the red light camera flash you?
    Then try this:
In lane 1 wait for the proceed light to go red. Wait for the left turn arrow to go green. Go straight. Does the red light camera flash you?

I'd then suggest trying a third thing, do the above with a yellow left turn arrow, but we all know what will happen then ;) Doing the above will prove to you independently that a yellow turn arrow does indeed trigger the red light camera.

However, green turn arrow. Lane 1. Red proceed light. No camera flash.

It will also prove to you that as long as you have a green turn left arrow you can speed straight ahead through a red proceed light from lane 1, without the camera triggering, but that's not something I really wanted to be public knowledge as someone in a rush might actually do this loophole and kill someone.

    • Given that we now have red light and speed cameras in NSW, speeding is going to trigger the camera no matter which lane you are in.

      • I probably used the word speed incorrectly there. I meant drive on through in a hurry disobeying the red. The speed limit is plenty fast enough to kill someone sadly.

        • I also had a look at the link you provided. There is mention of reviewing all images, but no mention of ‘manually reviewing’ all images. Sure, you say that there is a special centre for reviewing each image, but I suspect they review some and then ‘outsource’ the rest to the public - case in point in the other thread. No one looked at it and it’s up to the person recieveing the fine to dispute.

Agree on speed limits being too high too.

There is mention of reviewing all images, but no mention of ‘manually reviewing’ all images

I'm not aware of any automatic reviewing technology. They're actually hiring humans right now in one of the centres if you want what I imagine is an insanely boring and micromanaged job.

Besides, not the point of this poll anyways.

          • @Euphemistic: When we issue the penalty we are only matching the plate with the vehicle and any glaring issues. Takes about 30 seconds all up to put in the plate and the vehilce details load and a quick match.

When it comes back in for review, yes we look at photos and video if claim warrants it ie: moved out of way of emergency vehicle, went straight ahead etc, etc.

The public is not to know that we can see the video of the whole incident.

            • @askme69: Are you in the industry? Can you confirm if red light cameras trigger for amber turning arrows if the proceed light is red?

              • @ShortyX: It's only for RED. You must have swung wide and clipped the sensor for the straight ahead. Does happen.

                • @askme69: Describe the specific circumstances the red light camera triggers for lane 1 when there are turn arrows on the traffic lights for lane 1.

Or are you simply describing from the backend process?

  • On an Australian police tv show not long ago a police officer booked the driver going through an Amber light, the driver wasn’t happy but the officer felt she had plenty of time to stop for the red.

The reed light cameras only trigger for the reed light.

    • I had Police ones where it states.

Travelling at 60kmh when 10 mtr from stop line Amber light showed.
