    • Or just travel with hand luggage. Might make it easier

    • I'm going there too lol
      Also Ukraine

  • Anyone know what the deal is with the Azerbaijan eVisas? - They are single entry only. As I want to hop over to Instanbul can we have more than 1 evisa?

  • I spoke to the consulate earlier. He said that you will need a new single entry visa each time you clear border control. So that is why I was planning on going straight to another country direct from the airport but need to work out how it will work with my luggage collection.

    • Hey, if you figure it out, can you let me know. I am thinking of catching a arvo/evening flight to Istanbul and then visiting Baku on my way back

      • +1

I am thinking of doing the exact thing. So far it looks like it isn't possible to do it without paying for an extra single entry visa just to pick up your bags and recheck them in.

I wanted to ask Flight Centre if they can put the Turkey flight booking (if made through them) onto the other booking but don't want to alert them to the price and pretty sure they can't.

Turkish and Azerbaijan airlines are both partner airlines with Etihad but the issue is that it isn't on the one booking so it is up to the check in counter to check it all the way. Also the flight starts with Virgin and they aren't a partner of those airlines.

Think we just need to suck it up and pay for a single entry visa for a few hours of use

        • Dammit, but what if you only take hand luggage. Do you really need to carry on luggage? It might save the 45 bucks. You travelling on the 31st Jul as well?

          • @geeluv: Yeah I am leaving the 31st as well. It won't be an issue if you don't take luggage as you will not be leaving the transit area. You only need the visa if you are passing through their border control.

Seem like you are able to travel light but I know there is no chance I am able to travel 2 weeks with only 7kg of luggage. If you can travel that light than go for it as it will be cheaper and easier getting off the planes. I will just pay the $33 for the visa two times. No big deal after getting a fare like this.

            • @zinga77: I'm just going for a week, so hand luggage will be okay for me I think… It's going to be warm, so just a a few light tees, a couple of pairs of shorts and maybe a nice shirt/pants combo… too easy.

Two weeks might be a stretch but I can guarantee a laundry service wouldn't cost much… must less than a visa.

    • Please report back. Same situation

Spent a whole summer there in 2004 as a 19 year old and had an absolute blast. Was loads of UK expats there back then working on the BP projects. My mate was over with his family as his dad was working involved in the projects, so i decided to head across to hang out with my mate.

Went drinking most nights, had a driver take us to the mountains for a few days where we stayed in a mountain hut and rode horses. Visited close to the border or Iran.

The city was beautiful but also a bit rough and ready in a charming ex soviet kind of way.

I believe it has changed a lot since then with all the oil money. Would highly recommend a trip there in summer.

  • Speaking of cheap flights - Where did all the Aussie customers of Scotts Cheap Flights move to?

Could the flight from AUH to Baku just be full of OzBargainers? I wonder how many got onto this deal? I expect the boarding gate to just be all Aussies at this rate!

    • Do we all wear orange on the flight? Haha confuse everryonee

    • wear OzB T-Shirt

  • so it's been 24 hours now. i guess we're all good with tickets, no cancellations?

    • Im going to assume that it'll be cancelled righhht up until i board the flight..

    • It should be fine. I remember booking a price error flight to Delhi from Sydney and Virgin honored it.

      • I have a feeling this is an Etihad booked flight, simply because when i look at my virgin itinerary it doesnt include my return flight from Baku to Abu Dhabi, but my Etihad itinerary shows everything.

Im just curious how many people got the deal, if it was only like 20 then they will probably honour it. If its like 100 they could cancel it.

        • I think we are safe. Can always point the finger at Flight Center if something goes wrong, for which they will probably refund and provide compensation etc. But honestly, big companies like Etihad probably wouldn't want customer to suffer based on their mess up.

  • Sorry to be the bearer of bad news guys…. but mine got cancelled and they are issuing a refund. So definitely don't go booking accommodation or making any plans, because I daresay everyone's will be cancelled. I booked via BYOjet

    • Your booking status never said "OK to fly" right?

      • It did in one direction, but not the other. I also spoke to BYOJet yesterday, and they confirmed that it was all good and they'd be issuing my tickets that day. But today was a different story…

        • Sorry to hear it got cancelled.

I am hoping the reason why it was cancelled was due to half of the itinerary not being confirmed. I am presuming they wouldn't approve the confirmation of the other legs so BYOJet had no choice but to cancel the whole flight.

Anyone else had their flight cancelled where it was initially showing "OK to fly" for all flight segments on tripcase?

          • @zinga77: I booked through BYOjet, seems okay still..

            • @rambutann: I never actually received anything from them to say it wasn't ok… I called them to double check. The first time I called they said it was all good, then when I called again to ask why I hadn't received my e-tickets, they said it was an 'unavailable flight'. Have you received e-tickets? (Not the confirmation email… actual tickets with ticket numbers)

              • @surfsiren85: Ye, I recieved the initial booking confirmation email, then straight after I recieved a booking itinerary with airline reference codes which show up when searched on virgin australia, and through etihad (via tripcase, it wont show me the itinerary on etihads website because it was booked via a third party)

                • @rambutann: Yes I got both of those too, but no actual e-tickets/ticket numbers, I also couldn't do seat selection. And I was able to view my flights via the respective airline sites using the booking reference numbers. I'd give them a call to check tomorrow if I were you, and ask them to send through your actual e-tickets.

                  • @surfsiren85: But generally third party travel agents dont provide e-tickets? I feel like if i contact them requesting a thing that they dont generally provide itll just raise eyebrows…

Maybe much closer to the date..

                    • @rambutann: I've always booked through 3rd party sites and always gotten e-tickets, and always been able to select my seats etc.
Is it letting you select seats? I needed to know mine was confirmed and definitely going ahead as I was using it as a stepping stone to Egypt and diving the Red Sea, which would have required a lot of further bookings and planning.

                      • +1

@surfsiren85: Righttt.. fair enough.. if i was wanting to go on to another destination i would do the same thing.

It wont let me select a seat, but ive had issues with that before also.. everything else seems kosher..

The only variable between you and I seems to be that you prodded the bear. Im just going to book refundable things to be safe. Appreciate you posting about your experience!

  • Ahhhh s*#t!! Just got the cancelled email from BYOJET
    Had the original payment email
Then got the confirmation and airline booking reference number on 20th and now it’s being cancelled and refunded.
No, didn’t try to contact them haha
    GLTA

    • I just got cancelled :(

      • That sucks :( I wonder if it's only the BYOJet bookings getting cancelled, or if it's all of them?

        • My Expedia booking is still holding

  • I booked via flight Centre and all seems alright so far. I can check my airline reference with Etihad and select seats etc within Etihad website as well (just checked so still all good). Has anyone who booked via flight Centre got their flights cancelled? Also those who got cancelled, can you confirm that you went this far as to select seats etc?

    • +1

Same situation. Not cancelled. Guess we're good now.

    • +1

Booked with Expedia, still all good on Etihad and Virgin websites…..

      • We'll keep in touch if something comes up let's share as soon as possible. I'm in the process of booking flights etc between Georgia and Armenia as well. You can't travel from Azerbaijan to Armenia, you must go through Georgia. So I booked flights from Baku to Tbilisi using 'Buta Airways' which costs about $90 return. There is a train service between Georgia and Armenia, apparently, it's very good for a relaxing journey (with bit of soviet feeling, lol). Hope this helps another fellow ozbargainer… It's always good to know we've got fellow Aussie companions around while we're there..

        • if it's one thing I've discovered, Aussies are EVERYWHERE

        • Just had flight change emails from both Etihad and Expedia. Very minor time updates so no show stoppers Starting to think we might be ok……

          • @fightshatner: Got the same from both Etihad and flight centre. All good it seems.

            • @npnp: Another data point - I got the same from Expedia

          • @fightshatner: Yep. Think we're all good.

            • @mr_asstight: I have received the flight change emails as well from Etihad and Flight Centre. Wish I knew whether they are going to cancel them or not as my fingers are getting itchy to purchase flights to Turkey. Apparently they can do it right up until take off and we have no recourse for costs.

              • @zinga77: I think we are safe if we wait a few months into early next year. At that point, I think it is definitely arguable that if it was an error fare then they would cancel it already. Usually the decisions for the big publicised error fares are either honoured or refunded within 2 weeks of it happening.

                • @JDogman: Would travel insurance cover us?

                  • @fightshatner: Not sure. I think it's policy dependent and how you frame it.
I once had a ticket from Berlin to Venice two years ago that had an eticket number and then for some reason it stuffed up. It was bought via Expedia. Long story short I was on Airberlin codesharing from Alitalia. No one would help me and I only found out at the airport. Had to fork out $1500 for my wife and I to get to Venice.

Explained what happened to the travel insurance and they eventually paid out after a bit of back and forth.

                  • @fightshatner: I would think it would be very unlikely that insurance will cover you. From what I have read, they will refer you back to the airline for any compensation unless it was out of the airlines control.

Below is the policy from a travel insurance company and most that I have found have a similar policy:

For fault of the airline such as schedule changes, aircraft maintenance or staffing issues, any refunds or re-arrangement of flights is the responsibility of the airline. We provide cover for unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather, natural disaster, strikes, collisions or if you become sick or injured and are unfit to travel.

                    • @zinga77: Very interested in knowing this. If the second flight booking is completely independent from the first and the second flight becomes unusable due to cancellation of the first flight, then it is essentially out of consumer's control. If things like this aren't covered then what's the point of travel insurance in the first place? I asked this from travel insurance and they said it depends but likely to be paid. Would appreciate others thoughts.

                    • +1

@zinga77: It depends on your insurance policy. Buy one only after reading the full PDS as they all differ.
1Cover paid up when AirAsia canned their KL to Mauritius flights a few years back, and I purchased new MAS flights from MEL. Although Air Asia had refunded me in full, I had already booked some accommodation so I claimed under insurance for the rebooking due to unrefundable commitments already made.
So although you have copied that part of the PDS in, check the rest of the cancellation part, or other parts of the PDS. Yes the airline is responsible for the refund of the flight, BUT that does not mean the insurance won't cover you for rebooking the flight elsewhere.

                      • @lainey13: Thanks heaps for your reply. My understanding is the same. My insurance policy has a similar condition 'for fault of airline' but it only talks about that particular cancelled flight (which of course will be refunded by the airline) but subsequent costs as a result of that cancellation (like hotel bookings, subsequent flights that are nonrefundable) then that's where we have to rely on insurance.

                        • +1

@npnp: It is a tricky one and I am no expert. We all agree that the flight will be refunded or it is the airlines responsibility to refund the flight.

I spoke to an insurance company this morning to ask if the others costs would be covered (flights/hotels) if the airline cancelled the trip to get to the destination. The adviser said yes as long as it isn't something that could have been anticipated. They will require a letter from the airline advising the reason for the cancelled flight.

We all know this is an error fare and we can play dumb as much as we like but insurance companies are known for trying to get out of paying. If they see a letter from the airline advising that the flight was cancelled due to an error fare, it will be up to us to convince the insurance company that we didn't realise paying $350 odd dollars for a flight usually costing $1,500-$2,000 was legit. We would need to prove that we did not anticipate that it was an error fare. I am sure we all will be using similar insurance companies (or underwriters) so it will look highly suspicious that 50-100 people are all clueless it was an error fare and we all happened to buy the flight on the same day, time, flight dates and to a destination not usually booked this far in advance.

That is my take on it. I would not place too much hope that they will pay out but nobody knows for certain unless they have claimed for this in the past with an error fare cancellation. Hopefully we don't have to worry about this and we get to enjoy the flight and adventure.

                        • @npnp: what insurance company?

                          • @mr_asstight: Bankwest (complementary policy for platinum credit card)
