How to get a decently priced LG G8 in Australia?

I have a LG G4, and I want to upgrade, and I like the LG G8. Unfortunately Australia only has the downgraded G8S version. Can I get a well priced grey import or something? They released nearly half a year ago, and are still about $1000 on Ebay, which is ridiculous. I also wouldn't mind some other suggestions, but preferably not Samsung. I want to avoid paying for the brand name etc. I'm actually still struggling to find a phone that's better in every way than the G4. It had a heck of a lot of features for its time… Even most new phones are missing things that it had.

Look into Redmi K20 Pro, is around at 525 on ebay, great phone, snappy, great camera. If you want 90hz smooth display than go for Realme X2 Pro or Oneplus 7T.

    • I looked at the K20 pro. Apparently it has no wireless charging? Also, a lower density screen than the G4, and no sd card slot? NFC only works on the Chinese model too, apparently. Doesn't sound too great to me.

      • None of the lower priced phone have wireless charging and SD card slot, you have to go with big brand names for that. And regarding lower density screen, even the best display in the market Samsung Note 10+ has lower density than LG G4, I have used both LG G4 and k20 pro display still looks good on k20, doesnt have NFC though. If you are willing to let go of NFC than buying 128gb model for 525 looks to be a great deal.

        • Wow, the phone industry is pretty shit these days then. 4 years on, and only real improvement is ram and cpu, maybe camera. I'm almost better off buying an old LG again for $400 and it will still have more features and a better screen than today's $1000 phones…

@nuttapillar: Out of all the LG G series G4 is still the best, G5 was crap, G6 had promise but worse camera than G4, less said about G7 the better. If you are looking to pay less than $700 and hoping to get wireless Charging, audio jack, NFC then you are out of luck. for $700, your one and only option to get all these is Galaxy S10e.

the 7T has no audio jack, no wireless charging, and no card slot. So that ones also doesn't look much good to me.

      • and you dont want to go with Samsung. Samsung is the only one that offers all these for a decent price. Look at this, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/497166. If you can get access to EPP.

        • So I now need to spend $1000 to get the same features as a $400 4-year old phone? Has the industry gone backwards? No wonder I've gone so long without getting anything new, they're all unappealing.

        • That deal only applies to a spend of $1000 or more, which is more than I'm willing to spend. I'd rather spend much less than $700.

  • If I buy from overseas, how will I know that it will work on Australian phone networks, such as Telstra?

  • people talking about wireless charging like oooooo… when some of these phones come with 45-50watt chargers that literally take half an hour to charge… where as wirelessly your prob looking at like 3-4 horus

    • meh, it takes me longer than 3-4 hours to sleep lol

meh i enjoy just plugging my phone on charge in the morning hopping in the shower getting out and it being charged more than enough for the day.

You shouldn't focus too much on specs sheet, your 4k panel on LG G4 is way worse than 1080p panel phone nowadays. You might want to watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcFXEXJicgc. 720p panel on iphone XR looks better than 1080p panel on pocophone when doing blind test.

Also if you're after LG phones its better to wait till they are below $500, their price drop is the worst compare to other brands.(which is a good thing if you just willing to wait)

    • Yeah I have seen people mention the price drop, but I'm getting impatient, as I feel my G4 is on its last legs. the charging port is getting really dodgy. And the price of the G8 hasn't dropped much at all, despite being out for like half a year now.

  • I went from a G4 to Nokia something. Awful. A month later went to G7 and I love it. Better than G4 which was a great phone. I like the camera and have had a great run although scuttlebutt here is G7 has issues. Mind you OZB flamed the G4 something vicious too. So go figure. Both the LGs have been great phones and a fraction of the price of the Samsungs.

  • You just missed the Amazon deal for US$400, which was a bargain, but would only deliver to a US address. There are ways around that, and not sure whether it was compatible with local bands.
Now around A$800 delivered to Oz, but you would have to wonder whether there might be a follow-up deal soon

    • hmm, maybe if i can get my current phone to hold-out for just a few more months, I might find a suitable deal.

lg v40 for $499 is a decent choice… im in same boat, on a phone from 2016 with all features for ~$500 nothing super good value atm. Otherwise go down a tier and sacrifice features (samsung a30 for $180) and upgrade earlier. Phone industry has run out of stuff to improve and is going sideways.

    • the whole bands thing confuses me, as according to the list, Telstra uses a bunch of bands for 4G. Does the phone need all of those bands, or just a few, or just 1? Like, I'm not sure how compatible it needs to be. I think the phone supports some of the bands, but not all. I might need to somehow find out specifically what bands telstra uses in my area maybe.

      • I'm with Vodafone Aus, and wanted the Korean variant - That's the ONLY one with triple camera - all the others have dual camera system.

If you go US/ebay - then its an UNLOCKED AT&T or T-Mobile, there's a lot of overlap with corresponding Aussie Telco 4G bands, check the bands below for compatibility with your network.

        Hope that helps.

        • Thanks, but I ended up getting a LG V50
